Cookbooks are not the easiest for me to review in ebook format. But that said, I really like this author's works. I have her previous cookbook. I could only get it in Spanish at the time and I can't even read Spanish, but I find a way to muddle my way through and liked it so much that I have had this new cookbook on my wish list since it came across my feed.
After going through the ebook version, it is now a must buy. I enjoy Mexican food. It is my favorite cuisine and it surprisingly do-able for a limited skills cook like myself.
I like that the authors includes information about the origins of the dish and the photography is gorgeous as usual. I do wish that there was a nutritional breakdown but at the same time, I didn't expect it. It is just for those of us who have health issues that require dietary information, it is something that I value.
I really enjoyed the layout of this cookbook as well as the recipes you don't normally see unless you search them out. All of the recipes I tried came out very well and most ingredients were easy to source which is always a plus.
This is a nicely designed and illustrated, accessible cookbook that covers many of the Mexican classics. The recipes are mostly fairly meaty, although there are some that use beans as a primary protein. There is an extensive breakfast section, with many tempting looking egg dishes. I plan to try the mole verde and the spicy pork short ribs, both of which seem to be well-written, straightforward recipes. I was particularly interested in the chapter on sides, salsas and peppers and will certainly be trying some of the pickles such as Pickled White Onion with Habanero Peppers and Salsa de Chile Serrano.
I appreciate that the author doesn't shy away from using traditional ingredients, and she provides detailed notes about their use and gives plenty of substitution suggestions for items that might be difficult to source in some parts of the world.
Although this book might not be a match for an experienced home cook that has already made a practice of cooking Mexican cuisine, it would serve as an ideal gift for beginning or intermediate cooks that are interested in expanding their repertoire into Mexican cooking.
My thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC copy.
I LOVE THIS BOOK!! I recommend it for anyone who wants to start their mexican cousine journey!
I like that this book starts off with common ingredients and what utensils are used in the kitchen, especially the part about the spices was interesting to me.
The recipies are AMAZING! You seem to get your hands on the ingredients easily and the recipes are easy to whip up as well!
Overall a great book and you need it if you like to cook!
I have her first cookbook – The Mexican Home Kitchen. I do like that cookbook and when I saw this on Netgalley, I had to check it out.
I was really excited to see many of the traditional foods my mom and I make. There is a lot of cooking with chorizo, which we do often. I was so excited to see Migas in here! Now, I REALLY want to make some. It’s always fun to see things you already make and see the many variations.
There are some recipes that will take a trip to a Mexican market to find ingredients, which not many have close by. I have to trek a little for one, but it’s not too bad. For the most part, you can make many of these with a trip to your regular grocer, which I appreciate!
Overall, I thought this was a good follow-up to her first cookbook! It has many easier Mexican dishes that anyone can make!
Thank you to Rock Point & Netgalley for an e-ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own!
I enjoyed the introduction explaining what the corner stones of Mexican cuisine are and the notes under every recipe giving more detailed instructions and hints. The receipes are easy to follow and look delicious.
I was suprised that most of the main dishes are meat-based. Only a handfull of main dishes were vegetarian or vegan. I would have loved seeing more vegetarian receipes. But I liked the breakfast section of the book.
One more note on the e-copy: on my ereader the book didn't display well on landscape format which I feel was needed because in portrait mode I was not able to read the text. It kept zooming in when turning the page and I then had to zoom out again for every page.
Thanks to Netgally and Rock Point for the electronic advance reader copy.
Mexico in Your Kitchen does a nice job of making well known dishes accessible to home cooks that may not be familiar with what it takes to make them. There is a nice section on Mexican pantry staples and equipment. The recipes are broken down into chapters for breakfast, antojitos, soups, mains, sides/salsas, desserts & breads, and drinks. Each recipe is listed be name and then an English translation in most cases, a quick view estimates of prep time, cook time and number of servings, a highlighting of special notes that gives potential substitutions or helpful hints, and most have vibrant photos of the finished product The instructions are straightforward and easy to follow and the couple of recipes I tried worked well. I can't wait to try some more.
I received advanced digital access to this book thru NetGalley (for which I want to thank NetGalley and the publisher, Quarto Publishing Group – Rock Point) for an honest review. The opinion expressed here is my own.
I grew up Mexican, so some of the recipes were very familiar to me. Some of these recipes were dishes I have never seen before. I would recommend this cookbook to any Hispanic or someone who just wants to travel the world in their kitchen without having to leave their home. I also like how this cookbook gives an index about key ingredients used for most of these dishes. It’s kind of helpful.
This is a great collection of Mexican recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, dessert, and drinks. It includes regional classics and classics that are enjoyed all throughout Mexico.
Melt Martinez has created a really colourful and inviting cookery book. It’s more than a recipe book as it gives the background to many Mexican dishes, ingredients and customs. I downloaded on a tablet and it’s very easy to use. There are colour plates for just about every dish with ingredients set out and a simple to follow methodology. There’s a bit of information about the dish and suggestions for replacement ingredients. I’m a UK reader and I haven’t come across any items that would be difficult to source.
The book starts with background information about herbs and spices and commonly used vegetables and fruit. It’s informed and interesting and helpful to get just that right Mexican taste. The recipe sections follow the main Mexican eating patterns starting with breakfast, then brunch etc etc. I found the recipes and presentation really appetising. I love the colour and the additional information and I think this is best as a paper copy to browse at leisure and it’s a good looking volume for the cookery bookshelf. I understand there’s an earlier volume which concentrates again on how Mexicans cook at home and I’m keen to find that as a companion volume. Ideal for any skill level; I’ve been a keen home cook for over 50 years but I’ve found a lot of inspiration within these pages. The electronic version works well with seamless move from page to page or section to section. Very happy to recommend.
This cookbook is full of homemade comfort food recipes, very easy to follow.
This book is what I probably could give to my kids as soon as they are going to college and move out of our house. The recipes obviously include spicy ingredients that you could easily omit or use as much or little as you can stand it.
I’ve not done all of them, but for the few I made, I liked and other recipes just complemented my own improving the final result.
I just reviewed Mexico in Your Kitchen by Mely Martínez. #MexicoinYourKitchen #NetGalley
The recipes in this book sound out of this world. I had given both of my kids a cookbook by this author for Christmas, so I was excited to see this on NetGalley.
I've said this before in previous reviews, but it's very difficult to read a book, particularly a cookbook, when the publisher doesn't allow download to Kindle. I only had the option of viewing this on my phone, and it made for a difficult read.
Fantastic sounding recipes though, and the look of the book itself is gorgeous.
Mexico is full of vibrant flavours and foods, yet somehow this cookbook has managed to make it boring.
Almost all of the breakfast dishes are egg based, the majority of main dishes are chicken, just with different sauces...
Maybe this might appeal if someone was looking for a very specific recipe, but as a general cook, this book isn't for you.
A good range of mexican dishes. Recipes are well set out and easy to follow. I look forwards to trying them out
The cover, the name, the imagery with the recipes, all of it was so well done. The pictures are beautiful and full of color - which is so perfectly Mexican. I loved the simplicity of the recipes chosen as this is the perfect cookbook for those wanting to dabble is Mexican cuisine for the first time or even those that are moderately familiar. I feel like this isn’t necessarily for those looking for more complex Hispanic dishes but is definitely a great stepping stone.
The recipes are simple, instructions easy to understand, and done in a way that I think most could execute without difficulty. I can think of so many people who will enjoy this and would happily gift this!
While I love all styles Latin and Mexican cooking this one just felt boring. It has beautiful pictures and great information in the beginning, but the recipes were just okay. They were nothing special and nothing that sets this apart from any other Mexican cookbook.
Mely Martinez's Mexico In Your Kitchen is divided into 7 different chapters: Breakfasts, Antojitos, Soups, Main Dishes, Sides/Salsas/Peppers, Desserts & Breads, and Drinks.
The recipes look + sound amazing -- from the more well-known tried & true favorites like Huevos Rancheros, Gorditas, Baja-Style Fish Tacos, different types of tamales to Pay de Piña (pineapple pie), Encremedas (cream enchiladas), + Ensalada de Nopales (cactus paddle salad), there's something for everyone in this book!
Each recipe includes a short intro, prep time, cook time, yield/serving size, an ingredient list + instructions, and notes (e.g. what kind of equipment to use, substitutes for different ingredients, where to find certain ingredients, etc.). I can't wait to try out the recipes! :]
Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for an ARC of this book in exchange for a review!
I received an ARC of this cookbook from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This is a great cookbook. The recipes were varied and interesting, but they still contained ingredients that I can find at my local grocery store!
