I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review. Thank you. <3
Full Shift is a supernatural, queer, werewolf based graphic novel. So right off the bat, that information caught my attention, haha.
The illustrations were absolutely beautiful. And to be honest, illustrations can make or break a graphic novel for me.
Our main characters are Tessa & Maddie. Tessa, a werewolf, feels as if she's an outcast everywhere in her life - home, school, etc.
She has feelings for her best friend Maddie whom is a human.
We follow Tessa through her journey of emotions of the above AND as she debates taking an experimental / controversial "treatment" that would allow to become the "normal human" she craves to be.
Great, quick read. So worth it.
Adore this werewolf romance with a dose of humor and mystery.
Tessa is park of a werewolf pack living in this town. As a supe, she has to keep focused on what it means to be a part of the family even though her dad succumbed to cancer that even their werewolf form couldn't save. The alpha is a good enough guy but she feels distanced (as teenagers do) because her younger sister turned before she did and she's had a major crush on Maddie at school and wants to make a move but doesn't know how. Until she does and it goes humorously and horribly wrong all at the same time. It's the clunky teen romance with the added nervousness of showing your true self (in this case, her werewolf!) Oooops! But danger is knocking as there seem to be a group of hunters on the lookout for werewolves that is putting everyone in danger.
There's a meaty story in this campy romance that strikes an entertaining but heartfelt balance. I love Dugan's stories!
Full Shift by Jennifer Dugan is a compelling queer, supernatural YA graphic novel.
This was such a great story.
I do believe many YA readers will connect with the main character.
A thrilling novel just in time for the spooky season!
I liked the general message of this book. I loved the artwork. I liked the idea of the story. I think my issue with the book was that the main character was not super likable. That made this book just ok for me. I didn't hate it. I didn't love it.
A light tone and good diversity of characters. This book is definitely more character driven than most graphic novels, with a story that emphasizes the very human desire to fit in and feel wanted.
Generally, I enjoyed this book, but I will say that some of the scenes were too drawn out—scenes of dialogue with people mostly talking in circles.
A good, emotional read.
this was just a really average read. i didn’t care about the characters at all or their problems. there was a huge world full of witches and vampires or whatever and we just focused on one minuscule issue. i get that’s the point but it just wasn’t something i would opt to read again.
also the netgalley arc was a little blurry?
This was an enjoyable read. I really liked Tessa’s character especially. She was going through so much with her father’s passing, having trouble connecting with her wolf, and her crush situation. It was heartwarming to see her journey to learning to let her pack in and accepting her wolf. As it was heartbreaking to see her struggling with the grief of her father’s death. My only nitpick is that I wish we’d gotten a little more on that. Finally, Tessa and her crush, Maddie, were so sweet together! I would’ve liked a little more time with them being together and happy but I enjoyed what we got of them together. I’m not sure if they’ll be more to this series/world but I hope if there is we’ll be seeing more of Tessa and Maddie together.
And a brief mention, but the art in my netgalley copy had a slight blur to it. What I could see of the art it was beautiful, but the blur did hinder my reading experience a bit. I’ll have to check out the final copy so I can see the art in all of its glory.
3.5 stars
High school Tessa is an outcast. She can’t fit in anywhere. She also can’t figure out how to tell her best friend Cassie that she has feelings for her that are more than friends. Because Maddie is much more popular than Tessa will ever be and the fact that Tessa is a werewolf. But when word of werewolf hunters have snuck into a her pack, she’s wishes even more that she can become a human.
This was an easy quick sapphic graphic novel of self discovery. It was fast paced and a quick sweet story. I also liked the relationship of love between friends, one being human and another a werewolf… “love knows no bounds.” The story was also humorous.
I LOVED this graphic novel and the art was so so good! I found myself relating to the main character in so many ways, especially in the beginning. I picked it up and just couldn’t stop reading-!
I will definitely be picking up a physical copy ASAP! <33
Tessa has never felt like she’s part of her family pack. & when she exposes her werewolf side to a long time crush, she thinks things can’t get worse. & then the hunters show up.
This was a charming little graphic novel. It’s full of diverse characters. Tessa’s just a regular, relatable teenage girl with her first crush, who just happens to also be a werewolf. She has family problems, crush problems, but she also deals with the larger ramifications of being a werewolf in a world where she has to stay hidden.
I absolutely loved the threads of community, found family, and taking care of each other throughout the novel. Tessa learns, even when she doesn’t trust herself, she has people to lean on. And as she comes to term with her own identity, she’s able to figure out her place within her family, and her larger pack.
The topic of grief is also touched on. Tessa’s father passed away from cancer, and we get to see how she, her sister, and her mother are all dealing with that loss. I would have liked to get more into with the immediate family bonds there, but this graphic novel was trying to do a lot in a short amount of time.
Either way, this was a delight, with really fun artwork, and I’d be thrilled to pick up something by both Dugan and Seaton again.
My thanks to both NetGalley and Penguin Youth Readers Group for this arc.
I love the premise of this graphic novel it is so fun. I think that the art style itself is actually my favorite part of this story. I think that this will appeal to a wide variety of kids. I think that the over arching plot was nothing that I haven't seen before but I do think that graphic novels are popular right now and can see a bunch of kids really enjoying this story especially because it comes out around the spooky season.
Full Shift by Jennifer Dugan is a thrilling and fast-paced novel that explores themes of identity and self-discovery through a unique lens. Dugan’s sharp, engaging writing and well-rounded characters keep the story lively and compelling. While the narrative occasionally leans into familiar tropes, the book’s vibrant energy and relatable characters make it an enjoyable read.
Full shift by Jennifer Dugan is a ya LGBTQIA+ graphic novel!! I knew I was going to love this one because Jennifer is an autobuy author for me but man I didn't realized how much I loved it!!(:
I would say if u loved twlight and looking for something better than check out this graphic novel it's a ya fantasy standalone but I would also say you should read her last graphic novel "Coven" because I think if I'm right there was some cameo from that one in here! Which was so cool!!
So we follow our main characte Tessa and she is having a hard time trying to fit in anywhere she goes, the reason why is because she having trouble confessing feelings too a classmate she has a crush on and has a terrrible secret to keep. She is part human and part wearewolf!! Can u imagine your life as a wearewolf? I cannot! It sounds so cool but sometimes it comes at price! There was so many twist and turns for this graphic novel despite it being so short and I kind of wish there was a sequel coming to this one but idk??
But if u love jennifer dugan like I do I would say don't miss this new release coming out August 27th! Thank u pengiun teen for sending me an e-arc of this one and I actually read it early for u guys for once lol!(:
I read this in one sitting and really loved it! It has a huge message of found family and loving yourself and I loved that. I will read any supernatural graphic novel Jennifer and Kit write, I love them all so much. Tessa has such a sweet soul for someone that hates themselves so much in the beginning and I just wanted to give her the biggest hug. Dana being a mean girl was annoying but unfortunately they happen.

This was a cute coming-of-age story that followed Tessa, a werewolf who can hardly shift. Because of this, she feels isolated from her pack, especially after losing her father. When rumors spread that werewolf hunters might have a cure to turn them normal, Tessa goes hunting for them. Only then does she find out their motives aren't as bright as she hoped.
This story was a nice quick read, and the art style is so cute. I finished it in one day and found it to be funny and charming. Thanks, NetGalley and Penguin Teen, for the ARC.
Thank you to Netgalley and Penguin for providing me with an e-ARC of Full Shift in exchange for my honest thoughts!
If Jennifer Dugan writes it, I'm going to read it. Full Shift is a sapphic, werewolf graphic novel that's all about learning to love who you are. It's cute, emotional, and packs a real punch. I really enjoyed Kit Seaton's art style. The panels blended well together and the detail adds to each page. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a graphic novel to read!
For fans of graphic novels, or those wishing to dip their toes into the pond, this is a great place to start. The artwork was easily understandable, the panels flowed well that I didn’t have to work to be sure I was reading them in the correct order.
Tessa didn’t fit in with her family, definitely didn’t fit in at school, and she made the ultimate mistake when a classmate was attempting to come out to her and thought it was coming out as a supernatural like she was. I was full of angst growing up, and I felt for Tessa. She can’t do the werewolf thing right and no one will let her live it down.
The art work was beautiful. There were a few pages I just sat there to take it all in. Especially, the werewolf pictures. I loved the detail and the extra effort that was put into it. I also loved the way the past was portrayed versus the present.
I feel like with a graphic novel, there were aspects of the storyline that suffered. It did feel a bit generic in places. I have seen the storyline done in so many different novels (even fanfic) that just felt like I have read this story so many times before.
Overall, this was a fun and very quick read. One I do feel like many would enjoy reading.
yo penguin random house please fix how your graphic novels look on the app all the art is blurry. but even if i could see the art better, i still didn't like the story. i enjoy jennifer dugan's books but her graphic novels fall short for me
In this queer, supernatural YA graphic novel from the author of Some Girls Do and the illustrator of Wonder Warbringer, a reluctant teen werewolf would do anything to be human—if that's what it takes to win her crush's heart
This was really cute and endearing. Loved the art and the characters. I would definitely read more!
Thank you to Netgalley and Penguin for sending me an early copy of this graphic novel! All opinions are my own!
Sapphic supernaturals? Say less! A walk through grief and self discovery that will send you on an emotional rollercoaster that leaves you warm and fuzzy at the end? Yes please!
My favorite part of this graphic novel is the depth behind it and the way that it deals with such heavy topics. Grief is a theme throughout the entire story, and it uses grief to weave in self growth and identity as well as family and overall mental health. Despite the limitations of this form of media, it does a wonderful job of portraying mental health and the journey that grief and isolation can take you on. It deals with this so well in such a short amount of time, and I love the way that family and support is brought into the story to show where strength can be found and how the light can drown out the darkness.
The romance is super cute, and I love the slight miscommunications that happen between them to spur the more "enemies" to lovers line because it just makes everything that much more entertaining. It's overall so sweet and innocent, and I loved the growth that comes from their relationship as well.
If you're looking for a quick, fun read, look no further!
