DNFโd - the writing style felt as though the author was trying too hard. The opening chapters didnโt entice me enough to continue; was feeling more like a chore than a pleasurable reading experience. Have enjoyed other work by this author but unfortunately this is not one of her better works.
I enjoyed this book but I found the build up a little slow. The characters were good, as was the plot and twist.
Megan Miranda did it again. She wrote another one of her small town very atmospheric mysteries. This time however I am finally handing her the 5 star rating.
This has such a dark atmosphere. Think of a small town. Cop family. A draught. A lake. And whatever comes to light when that lake slowly dries up. Think missing people. Missing money. Think about grief and inheritance. And so much more.
For the first time Megan Miranda had me a bit fooled. I usually complain about these mysteries being a bit predictable and I almost did with that one too but then there was always that little bit of doubt. The characters were great and the plot just had me absolutely engrossed. It was the first book in a while that I could have read in one sitting if I had the time for it.
Thank you to #netgalley and the publisher @quercusbooks for providing me with an e-arc of #DaughterOfMine in exchange for my honest review.

Hazel is back home In Mirror Lake for her Dads funeral. A car is pulled out of lake the same day as her fathers funeral.
Her Dad was the local cop, both her brothers Gage & Caden are also in law enforcement.
The house is left to Hazel in the will & Caden her brother wants to contest the will.
Another car is found in the lake. Wait until you find out who the two cars belong to ๐ฑ
Her sister in law then goes missing, then an 18 year old student... So many weird things happening that you just want to get to the bottom of it all to find out what the fck is happening.
You will literally suspect everyone and not guess who it is until the moment its revealed.
This book bought out so many eerie feelings & I could not put it down. I also may have yelled at some of the charcaters while reading.
Another great ARC thanks @meganlmiranda and @netgalley
Wow, wow, wow! Megan Miranda has outdone herself with her latest novel Daughter Of Mine. This is by far my favourite of hers to date and it pulled me out of my reading slump with gusto. I devoured this one in two sittings, it was gripping and fast paced and constantly kept me thinking about how it would all unravel.
I was invested in all the characters, even the ones I did not like, the development of each was paramount to the story line and Megan nailed it in spades. There was nothing about Daughter Of Mine I did not like, it drew me down its rabbit hole for the duration and kept me turning pages on warp speed.
A huge 5 stars from me, add it to your list immediately, you will not want to miss this one. Thank you to NetGalley and Quercus Books for this early reading copy it is one I will recommend to anyone who will listen.
I didnโt find this book memorable. It was a basic story that the author tried to pad out. Unfortunately not for me.
I wasn't sure if this book would be fast paced enough for me when I started reading, but I need not have worried. It completely threw me over how people died, who did it and why! I also wasn't planning on reading it in a day, but I kept thinking ' just one more chapter'. There were plenty of twists and I was completely wrong on nearly everyone I suspected of something. Definitely on my recommend list
Megan Miranda manages yet again to have a small town story with a hidden past and make it completely different to her other books. It was interesting, atmospheric and compelling, with twists and turns all over the place. Highly recommend if you have enjoyed her previous books and itโs a good book to start with if youโve not read any yet.
Thank you for the opportunity to read this book.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Quercus Books for an advance copy of Daughter of Mine, a stand-alone thriller set in South Carolina.
Hazel Sharp reluctantly returns to Mirror Lake when she inherits her fatherโs house, but sheโs not the only one putting in an appearance. A drought has caused the water levels to drop in the lake and the past is coming to light.
I thoroughly enjoyed Daughter of Mine, which slow burns with tension from the start and includes so many twists and turns. I was riveted from start to finish and read it in one sitting. The novel is told entirely from Hazelโs point of view so everything is seen through the lens of her experience. It works extremely well because sheโs a practical person, albeit with issues, like her mother abandoning her, so her nervousness at certain events has a greater impact.
There are plenty of events and history in the novel, but there are no serious action scenes until the final showdown. This does not make it lifeless, rather each happening ratchets up the tension and leaves the reader wanting more. I find the authorโs writing compulsive as she is able to gradually build her plot up to a towering crescendo from a myriad of small developments and reveals, offering the reader plenty of potential suspects and motives along the way. Nothing is certain for the bulk of the novel until it all becomes clear at the denouement. Basically it is a novel of family secrets and misunderstandings.
Daughter of Mine is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.
โDaughter of Mineโ is a slow burner but it sneaks up on you. With each page the feeling of unease grows.
Hazel returns to her small hometown at Mirrow Lake in North Carolina after the sudden dead of her father, Perry. To her surprise he left her the house despite she is not his biological daughter and there are two brothers who are his. Gage, the eldest, she felt close. But with Caden, who is her age, she never got along. He always let her feel that she was an intruder. Her mother left their father after emptying his bank account, but Perry always treated Hazel like his own. But she wonders why he left the house only to her. Her brothers are not amused about the situation. When two cars are found in the lake, abandoned there years ago, long held secrets begin to unfold.
This mystery/suspense thriller has a growing sense of unease that kept me on my toes. You can feel that there is something not right in this family and at some point you think everybody could be interested in harming Hazel. The characters are all very well written except for Hazel. This is something I came across a lot recently in the books Iโve read. Very often the main characters are so dull or stupid and they are only created somebody has to narrate the story. I can't remember the last time I really liked the main character and felt for them. Is this a new trend? Nevertheless, I enjoyed the eerie atmosphere and the compelling story.
Daughter of Mine by Megan Miranda is an excellent thriller. A small towns buried secrets is always a bit with me, and this particular book is full of clever twists while keeping up a great pace.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my copy of this book.
When her dad dies Hazel inherits his house on Mirror lake. She begins to spend more time there. But somebody doesnโt want her there. Secrets are hidden and the hey might just be the truth about what happened to her mum years before.
I must confess that this was almost a did not finish. It starts really slowly and if Iโm honest Iโm quite a dull manner. I get it now though. The author was building a descriptive picture and I was fully pulled in once I got into the story. Hazel tell the tale and there is a lot of her thoughts making conclusions. The characters were believable and it was really difficult to see who Hazel could trust. A slow burner but Iโm glad I stuck with it. Really enjoyed it in the end and I was really satisfied with the ending!
I finished reading 'Daughter of Mine' by Megan Miranda in just two days, and it proved to be the perfect remedy for my reading slump. Initially, I anticipated some detective work from the police officers, who happen to be the brothers of the main characters. However, the book took me by surprise as it delved into the idea of a small town harboring its secrets, where everyone is considered family, and the truth is often buried to maintain the status quo. The town's inhabitants, especially those in law enforcement, seem bound by an unspoken code to uphold the town's secrets.
The protagonist, Hazel, finds herself thrust into action by three significant events: the discovery of a car in the lake, the sudden death of a local detective, and the revelation that Hazel inherited everything from her father while her brothers received nothing. This familial drama resurfaces long-buried secrets from Hazel's past, including her troubled relationship with her mother, sparking accusations among her brothers, and prompting Hazel to uncover the truth about a past accident and disappearance.
As Hazel delves deeper into her investigation, she faces resistance from the town's tight-knit community, encounters strange occurrences in her own home, and becomes increasingly concerned when her childhood best friend goes missing, and her family displays an unsettling lack of concern. Notably, all the wives of the Hunt men, Hazel's father and brother, have mysteriously disappeared.
The book maintains a fast-paced narrative, keeping me engrossed until the early hours of the morning. While there were moments of frustration as progress seemed elusive due to everyone's complicity in protecting one another, the pace accelerates towards the conclusion. Although I found the ending a bit too neatly tied up for my liking, I can overlook this minor flaw.
Overall, 'Daughter of Mine' earned a rating of 4.25 from me
Megan Miranda is my favourite author and I will always read every book she writes. I liked the multiple mysteries throughout that tie together at the end and the creepiness/isolation of the lake house that is the centre point to the story. This was another of her brilliant mystery thrillers and I couldn't put it down until I'd read it all.
thank you to netgalley for providing me with an arc of this book!
our main character returns to her childhood town after the death of her detective father and ends up inheriting her house which leads to some strain in the relationship between her and her brothers. on top of that she's also still trying to figure out the disappearance of her mother when she was a child and random cars that keep showing up in nearly dry lakes after a drought.
first of all: for a synopsis that focuses so heavily about the lack of rain and a drought, it doesn't really end up being in the book all that much, which is a minor gripe, but it should've been my first red flag.
daughter of mine ended up being a very formulaic thriller, which doesn't really offer anything to get mad about, but also is completely skipable and forgetable. there is little to no tension until like the last 30 pages and at that point i had stopped caring.
the author really tried to fill up the story with some additional mysteries that aren't mentioned in the synopsis but most of them don't really end up having a major impact on the plot and feel like filler in an already quite 'light on the plot' book.
if you're lucky for a quick and easy domestic thriller, go for it, but don't expect much more than that.
Daughter of Mine by Megan Miranda is a deliciously dark story about a fractured family in which everyone is suspicious of one another and each scene is full of tension. When the narrator inherits her childhood home, sheโs pulled back into the small town she escaped and immediately feels a simmering threat. What happened here over a decade ago? What just happened to her best friend? What is still happening?
I particularly liked the narratorโs voice and her way of seeing the world, how she pays attention to others around her and takes in all the details. Although this isnโt a speculative story, a mysterious undertone pervades the novel, giving it an extra layer of suspense. I recommend it to lovers of family dramas and dark fiction.
Hazel Sharpe comes back home after the death of her father, and as a surprise to everyone he has left her the house in his will. What follows is a very intricate story about love, friendship, family and just how far you would go to keep secrets buried.
That was an absolutely captivating story!! It did take me awhile to get into it, unsure of what exactly was going on. And then all of a sudden it was just rolling from one suspension to the next! It really hooked me in and I couldnโt wait to see how everything unfolded. And it did not disappoint I had no clue about who was behind it all and was left completely shocked!
Thanks so much to netgalley and Quercus Books for the ARC!!!
3.5
I love anything and everything Megan Miranda. While her work is sometimes predictable, it's comforting for me. I've been reading her stuff for so long and I love when she releases something new!
A family mystery that unfolds in slowly released deft stokes of information behind a long hidden disappearance and apparent evidence of criminal activity. A daughter returns for a fatherโs funeral to discover sibling animosity, secrets and lies. The ultimate betrayal resulted in withdrawal from the family home and everything she had believed in.. Festering hurt is replaced by Anger and desperate for the truth she returns home intent on leaving no stone unturned to solve a longstanding series of family events, fraud and tragedy. A catalyst of suspicious actions , an awareness she is under surveillance and verging on hysteria she realises that a dangerous force has been released that leaves the entire family at risk with no one safe from the trauma of the past. A well written storyline, finely defined and believable characters , a steady stream of unfolding facts and panic all building up to a conclusion that satisfies on every level. Many thanks to author, publisher and Netgalley for this hugely entertaining and rewarding ARC.
Another twisty thriller from Megan Miranda. This was a dark and unsettling tale of a family's dark history. A slow burner but it's well worth it. Recommended xx
