I was really interested by the title and premise of this short story, however I found the reading experience to be lacking. It was really difficult to follow, confusing, and jarring. It had a fast pace but left the reader behind as it didn’t set up enough information in the beginning. I felt like I was experiencing an action movie where the plot really doesn’t make sense at all, but you’re only watching it for the action anyway. Overall, it just wasn’t for me.

The Havana Run by Ace Atkins is a quick read about two men who travel to Cuba to pick up the belongings of a man they meet. I do think it was too intricate of a story to be that short and could be improved with length and more detail. Also, with such little known about the characters it was hard to connect with them. This book has potential but could use more. Thank you #NetGalley and Amazon Originals for the opportunity to read.
This story is action packed and moves quickly from scene to scene with some really good twists and turns, I wish there was more to the story. Overall, for a short story, it was a fun and quick read if you are looking for a little action and drama. The writing was good and made me interested in reading more from Ace Atkins.
This is a fun little bite of Cuban mystery. Ace atkins had a Great War for dialog and a quick fast paced short story is a delight.
This short story is about two journalists who are sent to Cuba for a (non journalism) job. Throughout the story, the two main characters grapple with figuring out what the job entails as well as identifying and understanding the motivations of the people they meet. Unfortunately, like the characters themselves, I had a hard time understanding what was going on many times. There are multiple characters and names as well as various places referenced throughout. Since this is a short story, the multiple characters/names mentioned and locations are a lot to take in and keep up with since there isn’t time to develop them further than just a mention. Scenes jump rather suddenly making it difficult to follow and don’t give the reader a chance to be invested in the story.

This was a whirlwind of a short story, following George & Jay on their adventure around Cuba while on a work assignment from a mysterious man that goes by "Navarro." They're on a "need to know" basis with their mission in Cuba and have to rely on the people they encounter in Cuba to point them in the right direction.
We're introduced to many colorful characters in a short period of time, and we never really know who we can trust! Each new character adds a new layer to the tangled web. The twists, turns, and reveals made this short story an exciting read!
I appreciated the attention to detail when it came to the Cuban culture and political climate. I personally connected to this because both of my parents are Cuban immigrants and I have a big Cuban family.

I was excited to read this as my husband is Cuban and I was interested in the storyline. The beginning started out strong and hooked me into the mystery surround the plot and the mission our MC’s were on when they went to Cuba to retrieve the family valuables. But as the story progressed it lost me. There was a lot going on and in the short amount of pages it didn’t feel like enough to flesh out the story enough. The writing itself was well done, I just wanted more.
I have read a lot of long books lately so it was refreshing to read a short story, I enjoyed the adrenaline rush of Cuba and the journalists mission. Even though it was short I would have enjoyed it a little longer.
I love an Amazon short story! This one is twisty and turny and fun. It would, perhaps, have made a little more sense if I had more understanding of the period of history it is exploring, but I still enjoyed it. I read it when I was sick, and it was a very pleasant half hour, lying on the couch reading about the adventures of two silly, lovely men.
I wanted to read this because I love mystery short stories and I find Cuba intriguing. This story didn't really feel like it worked well, going from extreme incident to extreme incident with characters that were stereotypically colorful. Maybe that was supposed to be what it felt like. I'd probably read another story with these characters if I came across it.
Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this
A fast-paced and entertaining story of a clandestine mission into the heart of Cuba for two journalists. The combo of an exotic locale, a beautiful and mysterious woman, and danger lurking around every corner make for a compelling read. Another 25 pages or so would have allowed for more character and plot development to enhance the story without impacting the all important sense of urgency. But overall a solid, enjoyably quick read.
A lively and compelling short story that follows the journey of two former journalists, George and Jay, as they embark on a mysterious quest to Cuba, enticed by the promise of a $10,000 payout from a enigmatic elderly man they encounter at a bar. The narrative unfolds against the vibrant backdrop of Havana, with its vivid descriptions of colorful clothing and intriguing characters, notably the captivating Carmen.
As George and Jay navigate through a series of dramatic scenarios, the story, unfortunately, falls short of achieving the emotional depth that could have added a more gripping dimension. Despite this drawback, there is an appreciation for the unexpected twists, the revelations unearthed by the protagonists, and the enchanting atmosphere of the Cuban setting. While the emotional resonance may be lacking, the narrative compensates with unique twists and the lively ambiance of the location, resulting in an overall enjoyable reading experience.
This is a captivating short story following two ex-journalists who travel to Cuba in hopes of discovering treasure in exchange for a sum of money. Along the way there are a lot of different twists that keep it interesting.
Because the story was so short, it was almost as if we were seeing bits and pieces of the entire journey, with each scene fading to black and opening up to a new point in their journey every few pages. That made it a super quick, intriguing read and not really enough opportunity to get too invested or attached to any of the goings on.
In The Havana Run, George and Jay get sent on a wild goose chase through Cuba to track down a hidden treasure. This novella is a very quick read. It gives a nice picture of Cuba, but would probably make more sense to someone with some background on Cuban history. The story goes by too quickly to become attached to any characters, or even to get a good grasp on what they are trying to accomplish. While I liked how fast paced the story line was, the characters did not seem genuine and the mystery itself was confusing.

This is a short story from Ace Atkins, quick to read, featuring two former journalists, George and Jay, struggling financially, who despite reservations, are lured to Cuba on the promise of a $10 000 payout, on the premise of locating and finding hidden 'family valuables' in Havana, Cuba, for an elderly man. You get descriptions of the colourful clothing and of people, like the irresistible beautiful, black haired beauty that is Carmen. The protagonists shift from dramatic scenario to scenario, but I felt there was little depth and heart in the narrative, meaning I was not gripped by the story as I could have been. However, I appreciated some of the twists and turns, the nature of what George and Jay uncovered, and the location itself. Many thanks to Amazon Original Stories for an ARC.
In Florida, George and Jay have been given a task: fly down to Cuba and recover a buried treasure. They'll get some cash and an adventure out of the deal, and their sense of self-importance will get the sort of bump they haven't had since losing their jobs.
That is, of course, if everything goes to plan. And it should go without saying that there are red flags from the beginning...
This was a quick read, and it's always interesting to see something about Cuba. It felt rather pulpy to me, though (e.g., the only female character is a sexpot who does not keep all her clothes on, and George and Jay are awfully blasé about the possibility that they'll end up dead in a ditch somewhere). It's not a genre that I read a lot of, but I'm left with the impression that the author had considered this premise as the plot for a full-length book but couldn't quite make it ackle. Very much plot-based rather than character-based, and I struggled to stay invested in the external lives of these men when they don't seem to have all that much inner life going on, and don't seem to give that much thought to who else might be affected by their actions.
Will probably hit with a particular demographic, but not really my thing.
Thanks to the author and publisher for providing a review copy through NetGalley.
This was an interesting short story, and enjoyable because I’m interested in Cuban history. The characters were a bit hard to follow sometimes. I did enjoy it.
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC of The Havana Run, a novella by best-selling author Ace Atkins. While the premise of this short story is compelling and it had a lot of potential, unfortunately it fell flat for me. George and Jay are sent on a mysterious mission to Havana by Navarro, their shady acquaintance. Their adventure takes some interesting turns and I did enjoy the historical Cuban setting.
The Havana Run by favorite author Ace Atkins is a neat short story about two journalists lacking money who agrees to go to Cuba and collect something for a man they just met. In Cuba things doesn't go that well and the different twists in this story is great. Thanks to Amazon original stories and Netgalley for letting me read this advance copy.
The Havana Run by Ace Atkins was an enjoyable short story filled with exotic locations, dangerous, yet beautiful women and an incredibly search for a hidden treasure. I just wish that the two main characters had connected a bit more with me. It was a fun, fast ride but maybe just a tad too fast.
Thanks to Amazon Original Stories and Netgalley for the digital ARC. This was given to me for an honest review.
