The premise of the book was so good and I just had to have it. Mystery, suspense, serial killer, FBI Agent...very promising. I did enjoy listening to how the narrator Lauryn Allman narrated, it is just the story itself had some discrepancies that confused me.
I would like to thank NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this audiobook in exchange for my honest review.
3.25s/5 stars! Thank you, Netgalley, Dreamscape Select, and Storm Publishing for the audiobook of The Therapy Room by Sam Baron narrated by Lauryn Allman.
The narrator did a fantastic job with this novel and I enjoyed it. I felt the tension and suspense but I felt like it didn't hook me like I usually get. I think it may have been because I didn't connect with the characters - there might be a high chance of me getting some of their characters confused because it seemed like a lot. The description of this novel is intriguing and glad I got the chance to listen to this. I wonder if this may have been a better book for me if I had read it instead of listened to it. The ending was a shocker for me - did not expect that!
I do love the description of the main character - a woman of color who has a deaf daughter. Again, the narrator did a great job with this novel. This is my first book by this author and I believe there's a second book coming out in this series. I'll definitely be on the lookout for the second one.
The blurb was right up my street and I wasn't disappointed, I got involved The premise worked so well and I got really into it. I hadn't listened to anything by this author or narrator before and I will definitely do more. There were loads of different tangents I can see this author getting better and better and looking forward to more.
I was given an advance copy by netgalley and the publishers but the review is entirely my own.
FBI agent Susan Parker is called back while on break after her husband's death. She has been spending time with her seven-year-old daughter Natalie. When Doctor Magnusson is found dead and there is a post it note with "Susan Parker" written on it, she is called into action. She has been trying to hunt down this allusive doctor believing he was the serial killer dubbed ‘Splinter.
When twelve victims are found in "therapy rooms", agent Parker is shocked when they won’t speak. What investigators do know is that mental health professionals are being targeted, what they do not know is why.
This book was a fast read and the first book in a new series featuring FBI agent Susan Parker. Susan is a determined yet flawed character who is still struggling after the loss of her husband. Her first case back to work is a doozy.
I enjoyed the tension and suspense in this book. I would like to know more about the other members of the team and their stories as well. I hope this is explored in future books.
Tense and suspenseful.
Thank you Netgalley, Sam Barton, and Dreamscape Select for the audiobook!! Great narration by Laryn Allman! This was a crazy wild serial killer story that just had my mind spinning! Honestly, I couldn't believe the outcome any I loved the implication that there was maybe more to come?!!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
This was a great thriller and I really enjoyed how it played out. The use of a therapist as the means to commit crimes was a very interesting concept and was believable. I really did enjoy the team of investigators and want to have more books that include that amazing team. The background investigation of Susan’s husband’s murder was also a very interesting touch and added more to make the characters endearing.
This was a great book. Premise was Susan Parker, an on-leave FBI Agent gets a phone call and attends to finds a crime scene involving a serial killer. It was fun and fictitious, but I suspect it skirts around a lot of genuine procedure. However if you just want a killer story with a cop mc, (and not interested in the red tape of the blue line) then you will probably enjoy it!
You know, I'm not a huge fan of the serial killer genre, but the jacket copy on this novel really sucked me in. Alas, I was underwhelmed with the book. Specifically, there's a major plot point that a character was trying to communicate to the investigators. And it was perfectly obvious to me what he was saying in his broken English. But it was like a dozen cops were ridiculously obtuse! It beggared belief, and it was a huge plot point. And that was not the only time where I felt like there was a real contrivance in the plot.
Also--and I'm sorry to be so critical--but I never really connected with any of the characters. Certainly not the primary protagonist, who was kind of blah. And even the pacing was a bit slow for a thriller. This was just not a win for me, but maybe I'm not the right reader? (Though, I really do love thrillers.) Sorry for the negative feedback, but thank you so much to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read the novel!
So, if you were to look up the definition of a 'sick book' in the dictionary, there should be a picture of this book there!
Not even sure where to start with this one...
Susan Parker is an FBI Agent...or should I say was....
Until a year ago. When her husband committed suicide.
She went off the rails and was placed on leave.
And so almost a year has gone by, and she gets a phone call from a Police Officer asking for assistance at a farm house. And she goes. No questions asked...
And they find a renowned Psychiatrist...dead...but not just dead, TORTURED and dead, slumped in a chair in the kitchen of the farm house.
BUT...that's not the worst part.
What they find in the basement is even more gruesome...
And, that's just the beginning!
If you are like me, you will be reading along and thinking...what about this one, and what about that? Only to find that every single one of the options I considered...was dead wrong!!
OH...and let me add that she has a little girl who is 7, and deaf. And a sister in law who is an actual Godsend.... Oh, and a mother in law from hell....
Getting back to the synopsis.... I would put this as a Psychological Thriller. Page Turner. Hold on to your seat, and catch your breath....cause you are in for a ride! ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for me!

Thanks so much for reading!📚⭐️📖
This was okay. It had a fast pace which kept up throughout the whole book, so my interest never waned. However, the mystery behind it wasn’t enough to up my ratings of this book higher. For such a unique concept- discovering 12 victims locked in each of their own “therapy rooms”, I felt like so much more could have been done with that aspect. I also wasn’t a fan of the ending- there were some loose ends, and it happened kind of quickly for my taste.
The narrator was great, though, and I also appreciated how the main character, who was a woman of color and had a deaf daughter, pointed out some micro aggressions she dealt with at work and in her family.
Overall, if you’re a fan of thrillers and FBI crime fiction, I would say to still try this book!

ARC REVIEW
The therapy room follows a detective and her team trying to find a serial killer called Splinter. I enjoyed the book and look forward for the next one. I thought it was well planned and well written. Sometimes the dialogue felt just a little off but that didn’t take away from the story.
The setting for The Therapy Room is what initially captured my attention about this book - a farmhouse, a lifeless body, and a basement with twelve therapy room with victims. This had all of the ingredients of a great psychological thriller/horror book and I was here for it!
The opening was great, as it jumped right into to the guts of the horror. Yet after that, I felt like there wasn't much too it. The main character, FBI agent Susan Parker, is mourning the loss of her husband and also raising a young deaf child. I loved their relationship. As for the investigation, I found it to be somewhat boring. and the last part of the book was very loooooong. There were times during the book that I thought maybe I had missed something in a previous book, but this is book 1 of the series. I would be interested in seeing if get a little more exciting in the series.
The narrator was okay for this. It was done a little slow, so I had to speed it up quite a bit. And some of the "voices" were just strange to me and didn't seem to fit.
Thank you to NetGalley and Dreamscape Select for this early release in return for my honest opinion.

Listening to this book took me back to my high school days of watching all the horror films. It was a good old psychological thriller for me and I loved it. I have an over active imagination and had to make myself stop watching the movies, but books I seem to be okay with. (As long as the hubs isn’t traveling for work 😂)
Several different twists in this book had me guessing at the ending and being wrong about it for sure. This looks to be the first in a series and I’m excited to continue to follow FBI agent Susan Parker on her cases. In this story Susan had been taking a break from working after the death of her husband. That is until a murder happens close to where she lives and there is a note asking for her to be called. She is quickly drawn back into the case to help find out what happened.
Thank you to the author, Net Galley, and Storm Publishing for the advanced reader copy of the audiobook. The narration was great, but the story was a bit unbelievable, the dialogue between characters was awkward/cringey, and there were a couple spots in the story where it jumped to another setting/time out of nowhere and just didn’t flow. 2⭐️
WOW! I wasn't expecting what came of this book! Very well written. I grabbed the audio off of Netgalley and I will say the narrator did an awesome job. The narrator has a very somber tone to her voice and thus pulls the reader in, almost making you physically lean forward to hear better. Highly recommend for those who love the show Criminal Minds as it keeps you hooked the entire time. Just when you think it's over the author pulls a last minute twist from his back pocket. this is the first book of the FBI special agent Susan Parker books and the second book comes out in April 2024 and you can bet i'll be jumping on that one as well!
This had so much potential! I was into the setting, and the backstory of the FBI Agent's husbands death prior to the events in the novel. I enjoyed the narration, and the premise so much! What got me was the (in my opinion) extraneous information about sexuality, race, and abilities thrown in. It didn't add to the story at all. Perhaps this is a sub-genre I've stumbled onto in modern thrillers. I call it victim-mentality porn. If that stuff was left at a minimum, it'd be a great series. I don't have a lot of hope for the subsequent books. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an advanced listening copy!
Thank you, Dreamscape Select for this advance copy in exchange for my review.
I’m quite worried about how this review might be received but didn’t think it was honest to not leave a review.
While I found the general plot of this book quite intriguing the cons for me very much outweighed the pros.
Let’s start with the pros regardless. As I previously mentioned, I very much enjoyed the overall storyline. I liked the twists with Splinter and also very much enjoyed the storyline of Susan’s home life. I would have enjoyed more POVs. I think that may have made the story a little more interesting.
I also found at some points wanting more backstory. I gaslit myself a few times into checking to make sure this wasn’t book 2 of a series.
There was some really strange wording used throughout by Susan, referring to people as “flunkies” “bozo” and “buster”.
The one part that I found extremely disturbing was a police officer saying that Susan should have “put him down and taken a knee on his neck.” I think perhaps that should have been omitted as it served absolutely no purpose in the overall story.
🎧📖 note: some of the latine accents (Marisol/ Diaz ) were very caricatured and it almost felt like it was satire. It would make me question picking up an audiobook in the future that was narrated by Lauryn Allman.
2.5 ⭐️ overall rounding up.
I liked the storyline of this audiobook! There was a lot of diversity and I enjoyed that immensely. This story went by quickly and it was action packed. I will say that it was easy to guess who the culprit was based off of the clues, however it was a bit disappointing that there was still one mystery left unsolved. I was hoping the story would wrap up nicely in a bow! Maybe there will be a second book?
The narrator was great, easy to understand, and great at accents. I did listen at 2x the speed and it was the perfect pace. I do feel that anything less than 2x would have made the story drag.
All in all, this was a great audiobook and story and I would recommend!
FBI agent Susan Parker is struggling with the recent loss of her husband to suicide and being suspended from work due to an "incident." On top of that, she has to deal with her overbearing mother-in-law.
After a body is discovered at a farmhouse, Susan is summoned back to work to lead the investigation. Could the murder be connected to the notorious serial killer known as Splinter, who has been targeting therapists and their loved ones? With each revelation, it becomes clear that there is more to this story than meets
I loved the relationship between Susan and her sister-in-law, Lata(sp). It's also refreshing to see a diverse cast of characters, including people of color.
While some parts may have been slow for me and I wasn't a fan of the cliffhanger ending, it makes me curious to read the second book and find out who the other villains are.
Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for the free audio copy of this book.
The premise is exciting and the main character is portrayed really well. She is an an fbi agent trying to find Splinter, a prolific serial killer with a vendetta against therapists. Unfortunately, the story just didn’t land for me. There were numerous plot holes and the writing style seemed forced. The inclusivity also seemed forced and honestly a little offensive…
