Although this book is part of a series, it does stand alone as a mystery, but you will miss out on the family drama and the nuances of that storyline if you don't read the previous books.
That said, this is a well-written mystery with some good twists. Although Jackson is a prolific writer, her mysteries aren't formulaic and keep the reader guessing.

Unfortunately. I was unable to finish this book and have to put it on my DNR list.
I was unable to connect with the character and therefore unable to get invested in this story.
I hope in the future I might try to revisit this series.
