I like Jessica Jones, I like Lisa Jewell so it was a safe bet I would enjoy "Breaking the Dark". I liked the supernatural element to it and the way Jewell wrote Jessica Jones character. It's a good story but I had a hard time getting into a novelization of a comic book character.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in advance of publication.

I generally do not prefer fantasy novels, but Lisa Jewell weaving in mystery throughout the story kept me interested. I like alternative POV between past and present or various characters, but the transitions in this book felt very abrupt. Some parts of the story were too far fetched, especially with the supernatural aspect. This book was decent, but I will look forward to her next psychological thriller.
Thank you NetGalley and Hyperion Avenue for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I probably should have read the description of this book before requesting it and just diving in the read it. I'm a fan of Lisa Jewell, but of Marvel? Not so much. (Or maybe not at all.) So, I had no idea who Jessica Jones was, let alone that she is some kind of superhero in the Marvel comic books. I was confused from the start... but I kept reading until the end. It was a very strange book, although I did end up kind of liking Jessica by the end. If you are a Marvel fan, you may enjoy this one more than I did. Overall, it was a crazy supernatural thriller.

Jessica is in her office with her normal hangover when a desperate (and wealthy) mother comes in and wants Jessica to find out what happened to her kids over the summer. They aren’t acting in anyway like they used to, everything is perfect, especially their skin and all they talk about is Belle a girl they hung out with over the summer in the UK while visiting their dad. Jessica thinks nothing of it until she sees the twins herself, all the while she keeps seeing a little girl who keeps her investigating this thing with the twins.
There is a ton of action in this book and lots of suspenseful twists and turns, but those are spoilers so you’ll have to find that out for yourself. I have watched Jessica Jones the TV show so I really wasn’t sure how she would transfer to book form but Lisa Jewell did such a awesome job letting Jessica be Jessica I can’t wait for more.

Breaking the Dawn is a paranormal/ superhero mystery featuring the awesome Jessica Jones. Staying true to the comics, the story finds Jessica damaged and flawed but doing her best to help with her investigations. The latest case involves a mother who thinks something is wrong with her twins after they return from staying with their father in England. Pond jumping and acquiring a new, young assistant, Jessica risks life and her very will to take down a true villain preying on children. Slightly dark and twisted, the mystery was fast paced and unpredictable and as always Jessica’s character is tenacious, sarcastic, and likable for every character flaw. As a Jessica Jones fan, I found this novel to be so much better than I expected and I will definitely be on the lookout for more Marvel Crime Novels. My voluntary, unbiased, and non mandatory review is based upon a review copy from NetGalley.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read this. I didn't realize it was a marvel novel, or about any super hero powers. It was hard for me to get into, as I like to believe what I'm reading can happen in real life. But, I'm sure many marvel lovers will really enjoy this novel!

I enjoy a good private detective story. At the same time, I have never enjoyed comic books or superhero with super powers. That made this book an interesting choice for me. In As the saying goes, “ in for a penny, in for a pound.”
Basic premise, twins from NYC visit their father in England and come changed, “perfect.” Jessica, a PI with super powers is hired by their mother to find out what happened.
Even putting the superhero capabilities aside, this was a pretty far fetched plot line. The writing needed tightening.. For me, is fell flat.
Thank you NetGalley for an advanced copy.

My husband is a huge Marvel fan and I’ve gone to every movie in the Marvel Universe. When I saw the description for Breaking the Dark and realized the tie in to Marvel, I wanted to read it. While I have a decent knowledge of the movies, I quickly realized that I did not know the all characters that are part of the Marvel Universe. I believe this novel can be enjoyed by everyone and not just Marvel fans though! I would recommend reading a brief background of Jessica Jones via an Internet search. I did this and it really helped me move past the, “who is this” moments. However, you can very easily get sucked into the plot of this novel with no Marvel knowledge. You can see author Lisa Jewell’s trademark slow burn all through this well written mystery. I also enjoyed the more super-natural touches on very real issues like AI in today’s society. Breaking the Dark weaved suspense and intrigue which left me eagerly turning pages until the end!
Thank you to Net Galley and Hyperion Avenue for this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

Sometimes on Netgalley, you see a new book by an author and just auto request it. I'm very much a "Lisa Jewell? Say no more" fan of her work. I had no idea this was a Marvel novel, and I'm glad I didn't because this was actually fantastic!
Jessica Jones was a great character. The case was fun and it felt like I was reading a comic book. I was so nervous for her at one point that I was stuck in a "I don't want to read in case something bad happens, but also I need to know what happens" mood.
Definitely recommend for adults looking for more media with Marvel. I saw at the end that they're name dropping SA Cosby to write a novel in the series so I'll keep my eyes peeled for that! Thank you Netgalley for the review copy!

I am not sure how I feel about this book. I am not a Marvel or comic book fan but love everything Lisa Jewell writes. However, for me this book missed the mark. Perhaps that is due to me not being familiar with the Jessica Jones character. The book was really slow in the beginning and just failed to really grab my attention. I was expecting a lot of action and suspense and didn’t really get either.

Actual Rating 3.5
I’m not generally a superhero/Marvel fan, but I did watch some of Jessica Jones on TV when it first came out and found her an interesting character. I liked the author’s portrayal of Jessica Jones for the most part, though it’s a much softer version than you get from the show (almost a bit more chick lit than the badass I’m familiar with). There’s also a good inclusion of her history and background from the show, which is incorporated smoothly and explained enough so that if you haven’t seen the show, you’ll at least know enough of what happened. That being said, I do recommend having some basic knowledge of the character before reading this, but that would be easily accomplished with a quick internet search.
This isn’t a spoiler as it comes up within the first chapter or two, but the author included the surprise pregnancy (or is it pregnancy?) trope which I am really not a fan of. And it gets mentioned so many times within the first part of the book so there’s no escaping it. Aside from that aspect, I quite enjoyed the plot and not really knowing where anything was going. The writing was excellent and kept me engaged. There were also multiple POVs and dual timelines which were balanced well and was a great way to incorporate relevant details throughout the story.
If you love superheroes, Jessica Jones, or strong female protagonists with troubled pasts and drinking problems then you’ll probably love this one. DON’T pick this up expecting the author’s normal type of book, though, or you’ll be sorely disappointed. My thanks to NetGalley and Hyperion Avenue for allowing me to read this work, which will be published July 2, 2024. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Breaking the Dark is the first Marvel book I’ve read. I was hoping for Marvel superhero stuff which isn’t in the book. Apparently, Jessica Jones is backing off on her Marvel abilities. Since Lisa Jewel is a great author I knew any book by her would be great. I was a bit disappointed that since suffering PTSD Jessica isn’t using her gifts. However, the book was good. It has great characters, good plot development, and a message too. So even if you are not a Marvel fan this will be a pleasant experience. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this ARC.

Lisa Jewell is one of my favorite authors, while Marvel is one of my least favorite themes. I was torn on what to do when deciding to read this book. I took my chance with this book since one of my favorite authors wrote it and every so often I do enjoy a Marvel movie. I liked this better than I thought I would, but it is definitely much different than the author's previous works. I do applaud how she is able to switch her writing style in order to be the first to write in this series.
Thanks to NetGalley and Hyperion Avenue for a digital ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Please don't make me give a star review. I love Lisa Jewell so much, and it pains me to say anything other than I love her books. Maybe it's because this is set in the Marvel universe, I just didn't get it. But it just seemed over the top weird. I don't know another way to part it.
I'm chalking this up to a me problem, and I will still read everything else this author writes.
My thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.

⭐️⭐️ This is for me - knew it would be the case- but has to give it a chance for Lisa Jewell.
My thoughts ⬇️
Am I a fan of reading Marvel, no.
Am I a fan of fantasy, no.
Am I a fan of sci-fi, no.
Why read this book?
Because it’s Lisa Jewell of course!
👉🏼 This is written well, but not a style for me. Glad I went out of my comfort zone and gave it a chance though.
•Get out of your comfort zone sometimes•
Q- what’s a genre that is out of your comfort zone?

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an E-ARC of Breaking the Dark. I love Jessica Jones. I love Lisa Jewell. This did not disappoint.

I was so thrilled to hear that a new crime trilogy based on Marvel characters was being written by some fantastic contemporary mystery authors, and even more thrilled once I heard that the first was written about Jessica Jones by Lisa Jewell! If you know anything about Jessica Jones, you know she isn’t your typical Marvel superhero and that she's got some pretty serious trauma in her past, which she’s very much still reeling from in this story. Even if you aren’t a Marvel fan and haven’t the slightest clue who Jessica Jones is (you’re missing out!), you can pick right up on this story with the context that Jewell provides in her writing.
I really had to do a mindset check midway through this novel, because I kept scoffing at the overall mystery and what I considered to be a totally ridiculous bad guy. This is my first experience reading a Marvel novel, and it’s a genre that translates differently than it does onscreen or comics. I asked myself, would I be this critical if it were a different format? And the answer was definitely no. So, just remember that as with all Marvel plots, you need to suspend some disbelief and be willing to go along with the weirdness!
I really enjoyed the writing and the characters, both new and old! I especially had a soft spot for two younger kids who helped Jessica out, one in the UK and another in the US. The end of the book got a tad too preachy for me, and with a few minor exceptions, the book felt more YA to me than adult. Still, I was totally engrossed the entire time and loved this deep dive into Jessica’s life. I can’t wait for the next installment to release, and I would 100% recommend this book to any Marvel fan!

I chose this book without looking at the synopsis. The two reasons I did that, one it's Lisa Jewell and two it's Marvel. Woot woot!!!
I was thrilled to be gifted an advance copy from Netgalley. THANK YOU.
As I began reading I was frustrated because I didn't get it and then I remembered it's Marvel, don't try to make it make sense just enjoy the ride. This speculative fiction writing in parallel dimensions might turn readers off but it definitely works for me.
All in all, this was a really good book I enjoyed it because it showcase people like me flawed but moving through the daily grind. Jessica Jones is a good reminder that even superheroes need to prioritize their mental health!
A galley copy of this book was provided by Netgalley in exchange for my honest and thoughtful review.

As a Jessica Jones fan I was extremely interested in this book upon first hearing about it, and I believe that Lisa Jewel did the character justice. Jones isn't the typical superhero, and that is clear in this book. It was a quick read, and an interesting story that relates to modern day culture. It might be best for readers to have some familiarity with the character, as well as, the other Marvel characters that are mentioned throughout the story, but I believe not knowing them will not hinder overall enjoyment of the book. As a fan it was exciting to see them pop up, or be mentioned. A perfect read for those who like the grittier Hell's Kitchen aspect of Marvel, or simply anyone looking crime fiction with a bit of otherworldliness thrown in.

When I began reading this Lisa Jewell novel, Breaking the Dark, I was not aware that the central protagonist was a Marvel superhero, which created some confusion for me. Normally I read publisher notes very carefully, but for Breaking the Dark, I chose this novel based solely on the author's name. The plot is complex and multilayered, as I imagine many Marvel plots to be. The characters are interesting and with a layer of complexity. Jewell writes well, and I suspect that Jewell/Marvell fans will love this novel. Since Breaking the Dark is the first novel in a new Jessica Jones-Marvel crime series, I predict Marvel fans will devour this first novel in this series, where the characters are set up quite carefully and the plot reveals new possibilities.
I know nothing about Marvel or Super Heroes, and I suspect I am not the intended target, however, I think Breaking the Dark has a lot of appeal for Jewell readers, new or old. Thank you to Hyperon Avenue publishers and NetGalley for providing me with this ARC. The comments above are my honest assessment.
