This book was requested when I was young and requested more books than I could possibly read. Sadly, I no longer have access to this book and my tastes have changed. Thus I will not be able to give feedback on this title.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to read this book before it was archived. But I do think it looks really interesting and unique and would check it out in the future if I'm able to! I like the cover and the description.

2.5/5 stars

This book had me at the beginning. I was pleased with the writing and drawn in by the darkness of the storyline (we start out with Pen killing people and her brother reaping their souls). Unfortunately, the book lost steam somewhere around the middle. First off, Pen feels way too young. She's supposed to be ancient, but her personality seems to be stuck with her body at sixteen. Michael feels even younger, but I was okay with that because he was supposed to have been "reborn" and was therefore naive. Then there was the instalove---Pen and Michael fell in love with no real provocation, and Michael is assured of Pen's "goodness," but I was never quite sure what made him feel that way.

But the real issue that brought my rating down was that nothing really happened in the book. It was an entire book of Pen thinking about her past and her future. Her brother goes off and starts the apocalypse and we just get occasional psychic reports about it while Pen waits in a hotel room for Michael. At about the halfway point, I started skimming, and that's where my ratings dip down into the 2 star range. The ending was interesting, but it wasn't enough to save the book for me.
