I enjoyed this book. After reading the plot I thought it was interesting. It was heartwarming and the banter between the main characters was really good. A cozy vibe for the fall months!
I couldn’t get into this one based off the first few chapters so I did DNF. The formatting of the arc made it confusing cutting between present day story and what I think was flashbacks? So I think that for sure added to me not vibing with this one.
I think I’ll try to tackle this one again if I had a physical copy to read from.
Haunt Your Heart Out is like a cute Hallmark movie with a little bit of actual sex thrown in. Lex manages the local secondhand bookstore, but her dream is to own it and offer things like open mic nights. James is in town with a documentary crew when he stops into the bookstore. There is immediate chemistry and honestly, the main characters are cute the whole book, though there is a miscommunication trope (not my favorite), this is a true romance and is happy ending compliant.
Even though this book is called Haunt Your Heart Out, it takes place during early winter (Nov/Dec), which kind of bothered me. It just seemed like a better opportunity to focus on Halloween. The secondary plot of the book focuses on how Lex feels abandoned. Her parents followed her sister and left Vermont to live in California. Her family is always pressuring her to abandon the bookstore and her home to move to California to "meet her potential". Throughout the book, we see contentious phone calls between Lex and her mom. This part felt a little overdone to me. Lex is 32 and is still fighting with her mom because her parents JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND. Lex mentions she goes to therapy and has since she dropped out of college. You'd think her therapist would have tried to give her better tools to work with her family. Lex, get a better therapist.
The main storyline, the romance, was cutesy but relied on the ghost stories too much for me. Lex used to have a vlog that followed the haunted happenings of her hometown in Stowe, Vermont. James felt connected to that vlog, and he convinced his business partner Julian to shoot a documentary there. Of course, the hauntings weren't real, and the plot hinges on Lex tricking Julian. It just seems silly that a 30-something-year-old man who works in film wouldn't recognize certain tricks.
This is a cute romance with some family drama. I didn't love some of the secondary plot, but overall a fast love story.
Thanks to NetGalley and Alcove Press for the advanced copy, all opinions are my own.
This was such a cute small town romance with a fantastic depiction of anxiety. I haven’t read a book where the main character’s anxiety felt so much like my own. I could really see myself in Lex and I super appreciate all the work the author put into creating her. For awhile there, I was worried Lex would be the one to change her entire personality and risk her own happiness to find a way to be with James, seeing as in most romances I feel that the women (or more feminine characters) make the most sacrifices regarding a relationship. However, it was a breath of fresh air to see that James had already decided he wouldn’t be forcing Lex out of her comfort zone. Finally!! A man in a romance decides to change and has zero resentment or hold ups in doing so. I adored Haunt Your Heart Out. It has small town charm, wintry vibes mixed with Halloween, fantastic characters, and a dog I would die for. Definitely pick this one up!
Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and Alcove Press for sending me an early copy!
Loved this book so much!! The perfect read around fall time. Great characters and a fun plot. Highly recommend.
Love the trend of Halloween/spooky romance. This one is just so cute. Good for fans of Erin Sterling and Lana Harper.
This is a new Author to me, I now want to read more from her. I enjoyed reading Lex McCall and James who is part of a ghost-hunting documentary crew's story. I found it to be a fun story with its mix of Halloween and Christmas. They will have their ups and downs as they work towards a happy ending. I received a copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I was initially intrigued to this book because of its plot. The idea was new to me because I haven't read a romance novel about ghosthunters. This book had a great beginning, but it ended up being a little bit longer than I would have liked.
The bond between Alex and James was adorable, and the characters were likeable overall. However, I didn't think their relationship was quite realistic enough. Once the main characters were together, there wasn't much of a narrative to keep me engaged, and it became boring and repetitious. Additionally, there are a number of miscommunications and generally unsatisfactory communication amongst all the characters.
This book has the most perfect warm winter vibes, and I adore the part about the haunting sites. But setting the story in December also meant that Christmas aspects would take the place of any potential Halloween mischief that would work perfectly with the ghost theme.
This book may still appeal to those who like cozy, flirtatious romance, even though it wasn't as unique as I had hoped. It still was a nice read.
This felt like a classic small town romance story with amazing banter. An amazing feel-good story for around Halloween and Christmas. Whilst being a romance, this book also has family elements and delves into expectations, trauma and familial relationships.
It started off a little slow for me, and I had a few issues connecting with the characters, but by the 50% point I was definitely more engaged and had curiosity over how it would end. I enjoyed the theme of ghost-hunting, as I don't feel like this has been done very much in other romance books of this style, but I would have liked a lot more depth to the relationship between the two main characters.
Hallmark Movie meet’s Halloween vibe set at the holidays. The setting also makes me think of the Gilmore Girls. Lex runs the local bookstore. Lex drops out of college and struggles with anxiety. Very relatable character. Also loved the friendship between Lex and Natalie. Best friends since childhood. Both characters are complex and heartwarming. When a mysterious out of towner arrives, James, the story quickly becomes a fun, love story. Definitely recommend this read. Thank you to Net Galley and Alcove Press for this advance read
Haunt Your Heart Out felt like a Hallmark story set in a mix of Halloween and Christmas. By including two cult classic seasons, this story really enthralled me into the spirit of the seasons and felt so cozy. Though the pacing was a little slow at times, the two protagonists certainly made up for it with their witty banter and romantic chemistry. The small-town vibes really added to the coziness of the story, every time I started a new chapter I wanted either hot apple cider or peppermint hot cocoa. This was such a fun book to kick off the holiday seasons and I cannot wait for my friends to read it too!
Super cute small town romance! Cute banter, great tension. Side characters are fun and help with the vibe of the book. The background of the characters are developed it's a little close to the instalove but I think the book spans a month? It's a Christmasy book with some Halloween vibes. It's just a fun quarky book if you want a light read with some spice I would give it a 2ish.
Thank you NetGalley and Alcove Press for the opportunity to read this e-arc.
Haunt Your Heart Out is the perfect October read! This book takes place in the charming town of Stowe Vermont where a hometown bookseller and documentary filmmaker cross paths. Will they be in high spirits or will someone ghost? Read the book to find out!
I wasn’t expecting to get so emotional and cry with this book.
This is such a unique and fun story about ghosts hauntings, small towns, book lovers and family trauma.
Our main character, Lex is working at a bookstore battling to get her ideas heard to make the business a success whilst living in an old, always need fixing house that belonged to her grandpa. Despite this being a romance, the book is very much about family, family trauma and expectations. I adored the main characters and little lulu and felt all the pain of the characters. The only thing is I sometimes felt like the haunting transcripts took me out of the story a little and felt they either needed to be more frequent or better placed. That and the epilogue felt rushed and I felt like it could have added more detail.
But yeah, really enjoyed this didn’t expect to be so moved by the characters emotions
I never like to give a "bad" review, because reading is such a personal experience and I have pretty much endless respect for all authors, but I have to say that this book just wasn't for me. I had trouble connecting with the characters and I felt stressed out by the whole premise that the male main character, James, is making a documentary based on local ghosts in Stowe, VT, most of which were made up years earlier my the female main character Lex for her YouTube vlog channel. The writing style here was also very, I'm not sure the best way to describe it, maybe expository? It felt like a lot of telling rather than showing. I did like Roberts's plotting overall so I would definitely try her again, but this didn't work for me generally.
I absolutely adored this book. This is my first time reading this author and I am now an Amber Roberts stan.
HAUNT YOUR HEART OUT is the perfect holiday season (including spooky season!) cozy read. I want to take a wintry holiday to Vermont just to visit Stowe (and maybe find a few ghosts along the way!)
Give me allll the spooky fall rom-coms please! Haunt Your Heart Out follows Lex, a thirty something woman who lives in a small town and works at the local bookstore. After dropping out of college due to struggling with her mental health Lex thinks she’s content with her life, and never leaving her small town (so she's actively trying to only date people who are permanent fixatures in her town) - until James, the paranormal documentary filmmaker, comes stumbling into town. He's there to investigate the ghost stories, but ends up wearing Lex down into thinking their might be life outside after all.
In conclusion, Haunt Your Heart Out by Amber Roberts is a beautifully crafted novel that will appeal to fans of both romance and the supernatural. With its rich atmosphere, engaging characters, and a plot that keeps you engaged, it’s a hauntingly good read that lingers long after the last page is turned.
I have such mixed feelings about this book! I thought the beginning was really slow and lacked plot and conflict, but the last 35% of the book was so heartfelt and emotional. I would have loved to give this book 4 stars if it hadn't been for the slow start.
Aside from the glacial pace the first half of this book moved at, my other biggest issue was the negative viewpoint of the main character. Lex was constantly complaining about her parents and her sister, and while these relationships were strained, Lex barely let her family speak before she totally shut them down. The end of the book there was progress made on this, but it did feel unnaturally fast. She went from being close to hating them to acting like they were super close and happy. I wish there was a little more empathy on her part and the pace of the relationships was better and more consistent.
I loved the relationship between Lex and James and I thought their banter was solid from the beginning. The spice didn't seem to play much of a role in the development of their relationship and seemed to be there just to be there. I like it when the intimacy plays a deeper role in the couple's relationship.
The whole premise of ghost hunting was cool to read and the picturesque setting of the small winter town was so lovely to read about. I would have loved to see a little bit more involvement with the rest of the town members because it's mentioned a few times that they're so supportive of Lex, but we don't really get to see that ourselves.
Overall, a really nice read. The end made me cry and I wish the first half met the pace and emotion of the second half!
I really enjoyed the banter in this book. At first I thought James was a little arrogant (especially with the lock/door moment) but I quickly realized how much I adored him. The characters were really relatable, especially Lex and Natalie. I was a little too understanding of Lex’s relationship with her family. At some points I wanted to throw my kindle with how they talked to her, but I guess all relationships are a little complicated which makes it feel real. I connected to the authors writing style and plan on reading her other books now. Over all, this was a cute and charming story!
