Great book, really enjoyed the twists and turns that this took me on and I would definitely recommend to a friend.
I enjoyed it! At first, I felt a little confused-the multiple characters & just figuring out what was going on. Once I was able to get in the story more, it really started to come together. The backstory on Leo & Trace was really interesting. I’m glad Leo & Andi ended up together too.
I recently read Look Closer and really enjoyed that. I picked this book up without knowing what it was about. I was expecting a domestic thriller and it isn’t one.
It’s an action packed book about a sting operation infiltrating an organized crime group that is trying to steal medical information from a company that has invented a cure for cancer.
The first half of this book developed slowly for me. I thought it was interesting but I put it down for a little bit. The second half of this book was like fireworks. I absolutely loved it. There were so many jaw dropping twists and the writing was clever! I definitely recommend this one!
Thank you to netgalley for an advanced copy of this book!
This is not a typical thriller at all as I felt it to be more of a crime fiction with espionage, trafficking and what not involved. It starts off on an interesting premise and then suddenly there were so many threads of subplots for the readers to get invested in. There were some subplots I was clearly more interested in than others. Leo was an interesting character with his obsession with numbers as an intriguing feature. He is a criminal attorney who has got involved in so many crazy situations that I was doubtful he can find his way at every step but he clearly as a pathological liar has his cards hidden and to be revealed at appropriate timing. It does have many characters due to all the subplots but it is pretty much seamless.
I went into this book blind and I think that was a mistake on my part. This book is really more for those that like things like spy thrillers, and I had a hard time getting into it! Once I was invested in the story, I did enjoy the rest of the ride.
I don’t know what it is about 2024, but some of my favorite thrillers have been all about lies: First Lie Wins, Listen for the Lie, and now, The Best Lies.
This book had my heart racing from the very first page. David Ellis’ last book, Look Closer, totally blew me away and was one of my favorite reads of 2022. While this was different in some ways, here, too, there were lots of twists and turns and I didn’t have any idea how it would all get resolved. But when I was finished with the book, I wanted to read it all again to see if I missed anything!
So much of what worked about this book for me was not knowing what to expect, so I’m going to be fairly vague about the plot. When the book starts, Leo, a criminal defense attorney from the Chicago area, is about to be arrested for murder. But as we see from the way the plot shifts back and forth through time, what brought Leo to this moment is much more than meets the eye initially.
The book is narrated from several characters’ perspectives, and it deals with a lot of themes. It also raises the question of whom you can trust, and if certain crimes can be overlooked if the motive behind them was pure.
David Ellis is a phenomenal storyteller. If anyone has read his backlist, please tell me which book to pick up next!
Many thanks to G.P. Putnam's Sons and NetGalley for the advance copy! The book will publish 7/23.
I devoured “Look Closer,” and was sorely disappointed with this book, as it is labeled as a mystery/thriller and should have been labeled as crime fiction. If you like Law and Order, this is for you. With a synopsis that includes, “ Leo Balanoff is a diagnosed pathological liar with unthinkable skeletons in his family's closet,” I felt mislead.
I absolutely loved this book! Especially the main character Leo. He’s a pathological liar who’s also a brilliant attorney, and who’s life from the age of 6 has been railroaded in more ways than imaginable! This book has a little of everything! Corruption from a few really bad guys as well as a few who are supposedly on the “right” side of the law- and so many twists and turns you have no idea who’s gonna end up where! This book gets 5 stars from me. Thank you Netgalley and David Ellis for a great read!
Talk about TWISTY! Please excuse me while I collect my jaw from the floor.
The author's previous work "Look Closer" is one of my most highly rated and most recommended book of all time. Pulling off a twist like has to be expertly crafted in order to work and I was doubtful but hopeful that he could pull it off a second time in The Best Lies. Boy was I wrong. I think I may have whiplash from all the twists and turns in this book. What a wild ride! I love being surprised and caught off guard in my thrillers, and The Best Lies had my head absolutely spinning! The whole biotech heist storyline paired with an expert game of cat and mouse made for one chaotically intriguing novel. David Ellis is easily cementing a spot as one of my favorite authors in the game!
Leo Balanoff is a diagnosed pathological liar, who has more than a few tricks up his sleeve. Suspected of murdering a high level target, he is recruited by agent Chris Roberti and tasked with going undercover to complete a job for his victim's boss. Little does he know, this job happens to involve 'the one who got away', his ex and love of his life - Andi. The plotline swerves more than a mountain road and just when you think you have a grasp on what's going on, you're given more pieces of the puzzle that make you question what you've been thinking all along. Who is on who's side? What connections are at play? These questions ran through my mind over and over again until I was literally clueless as to how it was going to end. After all, can you really trust a pathological liar? Buckle your seatbelts and prepare for motion sickness as this mind-bending novel unravels.

Ellis does it again with "The Best Lies"! With multiple POV, mind-bending twists, and a protagonist obsessed with prime numbers, this book keeps you hooked from start to finish. Plus, there's a hint of romance thrown in for good measure. Trust me, you won't be able to put it down!
David Ellis does it again, ladies and gentleman.
That is all.
5 stars well deserved for this cat and mouse masterpiece that kept me up into the wee hours of the morning needing to find out what happens next.
Pure excellence 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
“The Departed” is one of my absolute favorite movies and I felt like I was literally inside of that movie while reading this. Everything was woven together so perfectly.. each character, each POV, each flashback from the past. No eye rolling moments, no predictability, no far-fetched unbelievable nonsense that unfortunately happens a lot with this genre lately.
This will be THE thriller of the summer — if not the entire year.
Don’t call yourself a thriller lover if you have not read a David Ellis novel!
THANK YOU PENGUIN GROUP Putnam, NetGalley, and David Ellis for allowing me to read & review this e-arc! All opinions are my own.
*My Instagram review will be posted closer to publication date.
This was my first ever read by David Ellis, though much anticipated, and I have to say, without a doubt ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.
There’s a lot going on in this story: crime, suspense, drama, love, romance, humor. As the story expertly unfolds, I found myself questioning everything. What is the truth? What are the lies? Who is the villain? Is there even a villain??? For readers who love super twisty, suspenseful thrillers with just a touch of romance and a dash of sarcasm and witty humor sprinkled in, this one is IT. I loved every page from beginning to end.
Thank you to NetGalley and to Putnam Books for providing me with this ARC of The Best Lies by David Ellis in exchange for my honest review.
This was such a fun read! Multi POV, multi timelines, secrets and twists at every turn. The chapters are short, which I love, and I found myself soaring through them to find out what happens next.
Highly recommend this thrilling page turner!
After reading and LOVING look closer, I had such high expectations for this book and was so excited when I was sent the arc to read it early!
David Ellis did not disappoint, this story was just as crazy but in SUCH a different way! Each character had a secret of some sort that slowly gets told as you keep reading.
There was never a slow moment in this book, if you love a book that keeps you entertained and on the edge of your seat? This is it.
There was plot twist after plot twist that 90% I did not see coming. David Ellis proves that his writing and knowledge are top tiers. He takes something as simple as a character being obsessed with numbers and just goes wild with it.
Leo is SUCH a character. I never could take him seriously. He always had something up his sleeve and he’s WAY too smart for his own good.
I promise you, you won’t be disappointed adding this to your tbr. It was a crazy ride with a lot of drama/heavy topics but it was written so well that it all makes sense in the end. It is duel timelines and 3 different POVs but it was easy to follow in my opinion.
Can’t wait for more by this author!
s a huge fan of David Ellis's "Look Closer," I was eager to dive into his latest offering, "The Best Lies." However, I must admit, it fell a bit short of my expectations, leaving me struggling to stay fully engaged throughout.
While I did enjoy certain aspects of the book, particularly the standout ending, I found myself grappling with the multiple points of view, which at times felt overwhelming. The abundance of characters and perspectives detracted from the overall cohesion of the plot, making it challenging to fully immerse myself in the story.
That being said, if you're a fan of crime thrillers, "The Best Lies" still has its merits. Ellis's skill in crafting suspenseful narratives is evident, and there are certainly moments of intrigue scattered throughout the book. Despite my personal struggles with it, I believe there's potential for others to find enjoyment in the twists and turns that unfold.
If you're willing to give it a try, I encourage you to do so. Perhaps you'll have better luck than I did and find yourself captivated by the intricate web of deceit and deception that Ellis has woven. While it may not have been the perfect fit for me, I can appreciate the elements that make "The Best Lies" a compelling read for fans of the genre.
Thank you Net Galley for this ARC! Look closer by David Ellis was my favorite read last year so I was amped to get sent this and read it. It was twisty and addicting, I couldn’t but it down. Much like all other David Ellis books I’ve read!
Any book featuring an unreliable protagonist with an addiction to prime numbers just has to be good.
I gave it the following SCORE:
Setting: Present day, Chicago
Characters: Three main characters – Leo Balinoff, a supposed pathological liar and attorney with a propensity for prime numbers and seeking trouble, Andi Piotrowski, former cop and former lover of Leo, and Chris Roberti, an FBI handler – plus an extensive supporting cast of FBI and evil mob players, including the incredibly nasty Cyrus Balik and his nastier boss, Nico Katsaros
Overview: The story is told alternatingly from the point of view of Leo, Andi, and Chris, and there are multiple, explanatory flashbacks in time. There is a murder, and the perpetrator is in question. There is a high-stakes billion dollar pharmaceutical drug being developed and possibly stolen. There are constantly shifting alliances and perceptions of the lead characters.
Recommendation: I rate this book 5 stars
Extras: Admittedly, I am a David Ellis fan and his books are always well-plotted and enjoyable. This one had a little extra – like some of my favorite all-time books (Lehane’s’ “Shutter Island,” for example) there were pages that needed to be read again for the sheer joy of recapturing the surprise. A totally satisfying story.
Thanx to NetGalley and Penguin Group | G.P. Putnam's Sons for the opportunity to provide this candid review
I love David Ellis' previous books but this one was just ok. The timeline changes were a little difficult to follow and put together at times. Howver, it was good overall. The plot was interesting and the twists were the usual Ellis style!
O M G!! This book was amazing!! This is by far the most seamless thriller book I have ever read! It truly fits together so well. You can tell that David Ellis spent so much time crafting this storyline and it really shows!! I just finished this book and I already wish I could reread it again for the first time. Leo is amazing! He’s smart, he’s witty and he’s so funny. I really loved him as a character! I also really loved Andi, she is just so smart! I was rooting for them the whole time!! I feel like there were so many twists with this book but it didn’t feel like to much. This is definitely going in top 3 of my favorite books of 2024.
