Look Closer fans, David Ellis is back with a new novel and it took me all of two seconds to run to Netgalley and request🏃🏼‍♀️😂 THANK YOU, Putnam books and Netgalley for an e-arc of one of my most anticipated thrillers of the year!

Synopsis: Leo Balanoff is a diagnosed pathological liar with unthinkable skeletons in his family closet. He’s also a crusading attorney who seeks justice at all costs. When a ruthless drug dealer is found dead and Leo’s fingerprints show up on the murder weapon, no one believes a word he says. But he might be the FBI’s only shot at taking down the dealer’s brutal syndicate.

My thoughts: The Best Lies is a multi-layered story with an unreliable narrator and twists that just keep on coming. Like Look Closer, nothing is as it seems. Leo, our main character who is a diagnosed pathological liar, will keep you guessing until the last page. Even if you can’t trust him, his unpredictable, witty, and funny personality makes it impossible not to root for him.
I think this would have been 5⭐️‘s for me if I was more into police procedural/legal thrillers. The sting operation isn’t my favorite trope so some parts felt a little long-winded and confusing to me. All in all, an incredible thriller and I can confidently add David Ellis to my auto-buy list!

Thank you so much to NetGalley & Penguin Group Putnam for access to this title. All opinions expressed are my own.

I loved this author’s other title, Look Closer, so I was intrigued about this one and it didn’t disappoint! Great storyline and couldn’t put it down!

Leo loses his job and becomes the prime suspect for some horrendous crimes. This novel has so many twists and turns, eventually revealing the guilty party. I’m a huge fan of David Ellis and loved this twisty book so much

David Ellis never disappoints! This book had thrilling plot twists that constantly kept me on my toes. I loved the witty, larger-than-life main character, Leo, although I found his prime number obsession distracting at times. This was a quick read, with multiple POVs and multiple timelines, and is a great thriller that lures you in and doesn't let go until the very end.

Thank you to NetGalley and Putnam Books/PENGUIN GROUP for providing me with an advance reader copy in exchange for an honest review.

Definietely worth a read!
Extra twisty thriller (literally the best genre).
I was not expecting the ending AT ALL.

The ride itself was addicting and got me hooked from the very beginning!
(I may have also finished it in one sitting).

DO IT!

Look Closer was one of my favorite thrillers in 2022. I went into The Best Lies with high hopes, but it missed the mark for me. The pacing was slow and I didn't really like any of the characters. The story alternates between Leo, Chris, and Andi's POV. There were also a lot of minor characters to keep track of. Overall, I was bored and 416 pages was too much for a book with minimal tension.

Thank you NetGalley and GP Putnam and Sons for the ARC in exchange of an honest review.

Wow! I won’t lie, it started out fairly slow and I was getting bored with it. But once it picked up, it never stopped. There were so many twists and turns that I never saw coming. This was an awesome read!

3 liar, liar pants on fire stars

When a character habitually lies, you never know when to believe them. Leo is an attorney who served time and now is the suspect in a new murder case. The FBI needs his help, though, in the bigger crime world.

It sounds like a great premise, but . . . I never quite knew who to believe in this one. I tried to keep up with Leo, his lies, the FBI angle, and the mobsters. There were other characters to track as well.
Cyrus is an evil man, so no one is really upset that he’s dead, but Leo needs to explain why his fingerprints are on the weapon at the scene. Will he help the feds or go to jail?

There are lots of shifting allegiances in this one and just when I thought I had it figured out, there was another plot twist. How does Leo’s former love, Andi, figure into this one? Secrets abound in this book.

Sadly, this one did not keep me on the edge of my seat. I did want to know how it all played out, but it lacked some ingredients that make for a strong thriller.

I loved this author's last book, so I'm hoping his next is more my cup of tea.

David Ellis does it again 👏🏼

My expectations were sky high coming off of Look Closer, and this book lived up to them. Good luck putting this one down once you start it. Extremely fast paced with short chapters and multi-POV, Ellis’ thrillers are intricate and addicting. I will be recommending this book to everyone.

NOT A SPOILER:
At the 80% mark, when the book is building towards the big moment, he ends a chapter by saying “Anything can happen tomorrow. There are so many moving parts, so many players, so much I don’t know. It’s gonna be a wild ride.”

He’s telling his reader to buckle up for a crazy ending, and he delivers! I’ve never seen anything like it.

Thank you Putnam and NetGalley for the ARC. This was my most anticipated read of the year and it was phenomenal.

All I have to say is if you haven’t pre-ordered this book yet, what are you waiting for?! 🤯 @david_ellis_author has outdone himself again with this one! The way the characters intertwined and the twists, I just can’t say how much I enjoyed this book!!

🚔💀🏛️

This story follows the multiple POV of Leo an attorney that’s a diagnosed pathological liar, Andi a former cop, and Chris an FBI agent. When a drug dealer is found dead and Leo’s prints are on the murder weapon Leo will stop at nothing to put the true guilty person behind bars. Buckle up for this roller coaster of twists!

David does it again!!! Wow you guys this book was so good! A much different plot than LOOK CLOSER but still as thrilling with just as many twists.

I don’t think anyone does twists and reveals like David. In the beginning I will admit I was a little confused because of the multiple time lines and characters, it felt a little overwhelming but once you got going everything clicks and nothing disappoints!

I loved all of the characters in this story, especially our main character Leo. It was so easy to root for him throughout the story. Not to mention how smart and witty he is.

✨Thank you @NetGalley and @putnambooks for providing me with an Advanced Reader Copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

✨Leo, an attorney and acclaimed pathological liar, finds himself in a jam when his fingerprints show up on the murder weapon of a dead drug dealer.

✨However, he is the FBI’s only shot at trying to take down the real killer. He can choose to go undercover for the FBI or go to prison for murder.

✨With some secrets up his sleeve, and a run-in with his ex, he’s forced into a corner, one he may not be able to get out of.

✨This author is a first for me, and the concept and plot is right up my alley. However, I thought the book was confusing with the amount of narratives the story is told from, coupled with several different timelines. It was hard to keep things straight. I will, however, check out other David Ellis books.

Look Closer was one of my favorites last year so I was excited to dive into this new book by the same author. It delivers a captivating story filled with lies, secrets, and surprising reveals. The multiple perspectives and jumps to the past kept me engaged throughout.

The first half starts off with a bang, setting the scene for a thrilling adventure. The pacing slows down a bit in the second half, but it ultimately leads to a satisfying conclusion that cleverly ties back to the beginning.

This book is a treasure trove for readers who enjoy:
✨Undercover agents and spying
✨Drug and human trafficking
✨Stolen babies
✨Multiple timelines
✨Prime numbers
✨Revenge

Thank you Penguin Group Putnam, David Ellis and NetGalley for an advanced copy. The Best Lies comes out July 23, 2024.

No one writes thrillers like David Ellis. This book had me hooked from the start and the twists and turns just kept coming. My jaw dropped no less than 5 times at the end when the secrets were relieved. I cannot wait to recommend this book to every thriller lover I know. 5 out of 5 stars easily. One of my favorite reads of 2024! Leo and Andi were both so smart and tricky. Just so good.

As someone who has not read from this author previously I was super excited to read this early review and it did not disappoint!! This book was action packed , full of twists & turns.
There are 3 POV’s & multiple time lines, Leo, Andi & Chris which makes for so many interesting perspectives. Chris acts as Leo’s handler, when the FBI tries to take down Cyrus Balik. Cyrus is a gun & drug runner as well as a human trafficker.
The characters are incredibly well written. I think for me I had to sit with the ending to process it.
If you enjoy legal thrillers, police procedural, then read this book. I highly recommend!

Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Group Putnam for this ARC!

Wow! I think I will have to put David Ellis on my list of favorite authors! After a bit of a slow start for the first 50 pages, it then became a high drama, high intensity novel. There are three POVs. Leo is the attorney and pathological liar. He is arrested for murder and must either work for the FBI or go to prison. Andi, the ex-cop, turned security expert and also is Leo’s love interest that got away. Finally there is Chris, Chris acts as Leo’s handler, when the FBI tries to take down Cyrus Balik. Cyrus runs drugs, guns, and is a human trafficker. The characters are very well- written .This novel will not disappoint!

Thank you to Net Galley and Putnam Publishing for the e-ARC to read and review.

Thank you to Putnam books and Netgalley for sending me a copy of this ARC in exchange for my review.
David Ellis does it again! I found this story to be fun, clever and interesting. Look Closer was my top thriller read of 2023 so there was absolutely no way I was missing this new book. The Best Lies didn’t blow me away quite like Look Closer did, but it is a reliable, twisty mystery that kept me fully engaged. 4.5 stars!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I was hooked from the beginning, wanting to know what was going on. I loved how it started at the end and looped back around. David Ellis’ ability to reveal twists a little at a time makes his books unputdownable. I loved how toward the end, the twists felt like they were stacked, one after the next - definitely had me thinking “what??” multiple times.
