Look Closer was my 2nd favorite book of 2022 and I have been ANXIOUSLY awaiting his newest book. This was my most anticipated book of the year and it blew me away! This book doesn’t come out until July 23 so go back and grab a copy of Look Closer to hold you over until this hits shelves!

David writes incredible legal thrillers – he is a lawyer and judge and his stories seem incredibly spot on in the legal and crime details.

The Best Lies is a legal thriller about Leo who is a diagnosed pathological liar. He’s an attorney and will seek justice at all costs. We start the story and Leo is about to be arrested for murder of a crime lord – his fingerprints are on the murder weapon and his DNA is at the scene of the crime. It seems like an open and shut case.

The story is told from multiple POVs and in multiple timelines. This is a fast paced bingeworthy, highly addicting story. There are so many incredibly well executed twists. All the details and breadcrumbs along the way paid off immensely for me. All the moving parts fit seamlessly together and I am in awe of how this one shook out.

Recommend if you enjoy:
▫️Books about mobsters and sting operations
▫️Crime and legal thrillers
▫️Twists upon twists!
▫️Fast paced stories
▫️Multiple timelines and multiple POVs

Look Closer was my favorite mystery/thriller last year, so I was really excited to pick this one up. I'm bummed to say that I didn't love it as much as Look Closer. David Ellis writes such smart books with really good twists. But with this one, I felt like I was kept in the dark for too long and then we got all the twists at once in the end. I thought Look Closer was better paced.

Pick this up if you love:
- dark crime thrillers
- twists
- a touch of a love story

Ellis delivers a fast-paced, sophisticated, and highly entertaining story with The Best Lies. The many twists and turns takes the readers on a journey that will have their head spinning. We get multiple POVs making us eager to learn everyone’s true agendas yet not being sure until the final act. The flashbacks help us get there while detailing the history between characters. That being said, readers will have to keep up, but the reward is that much sweeter for it.

The story unfolds through multiple perspectives, skillfully blending past and present events to deliver a wild ride of exhilarating twists and turns. When everything finally comes together, be prepared to have your mind blown. Ellis' storytelling is top-notch, and the characters are well-developed and fascinating. I particularly enjoyed Leo's unique talent for numbers. His quirky gift added a layer of amusement to the story. Like many others, I loved “Look Closer” by this author. It was a five star read for me. I was super excited to read this!

There are three main characters, Leo, Chris and Andi. We get all three of their points of view throughout the book.

The book started out very interesting for me, but quickly after that it became very long and drawn out. It is over 400 pages. Leo is an attorney (who just got off suspension) and a pathological liar. A big drug dealer is found dead and Leo’s fingerprints are on the weapon. He must go strike a deal and go undercover with the FBI.

But, ugh. I wish I enjoyed it more. I just didn’t connect to this type of story.

Thank you Putnam Books and NetGalley for an advanced readers copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Thank you @putnambooks & @prhaudio for my complimentary copies. My thoughts are my own.

Last year LOOK CLOSER was one of my 𝙩𝙤𝙥 reads of the year, so I have been looking forward to David Ellis’s new release all summer! However, truth be told, I didn’t enjoy this one as much as I enjoyed (loved, fan-girled) LOOK CLOSER. The intricate plot and numerous twists were excellent and what I have come to expect from this author, but the storyline just wasn’t as interesting to me. I’m not a big fan of stories involving crime lords, thugs, police detectives, and FBI agents, with lots of double crosses. The storyline was so complex, I admit to being a bit confused at times.

That being said, this one is receiving 5 stars from many reviewers and it has been optioned for television! The intricate mystery is well-written and unfolds through multiple perspectives and timelines.

It’s been a while since I’ve gotten whiplash from twists and turns, and I’m sure hurting now! Everything seemed pretty straightforward until it just wasn’t. I really enjoyed the character development and multiple POV delivery of the story and the absolute roller coaster that the last 40% or so of the book turned out to be!

Leo Balanoff is an attorney who treads a delicate line between righteousness and legality. While diagnosed as a pathological liar, he's as smart as a whip. He's a math whiz who thinks in permutations of prime numbers (which completely flew over my head). This wild story unfolds as Leo is arrested for the murder of Cyrus Balik; a notorious gangster involved in heinous crimes. DNA found at the scene combined with a clear motive implicates Leo in the murder. It is revealed that Cyrus and his criminal syndicate, led by the even more ruthless Nico Katsaros, has been working on a major scheme involving international espionage. FBI Special Agent Chris Roberti strikes a deal with Leo for him to avoid imprisonment by going undercover to do an important job for Nico. Leo also runs into his ex-girlfriend Andi, a former police officer now working in private security. The story weaves recollections of the past with present events, resulting in a series of unexpected twists and turns. When everything masterfully comes together, get ready to fall off your chair.

This book was SOOO good!!! I haven’t read a book by David Ellis before but have heard a lot of good things about his previous book ‘Look Closer’. So when I saw he had a new book on Netgalley I wanted to give it a try. This book captured me from the beginning and was so easy to read. I love the short chapters! The flow of his writing was easy to follow along especially when he would go from the past to present. There were so many twists and surprising moments in this book. I absolutely enjoyed reading it and will recommend!

Wow! David Ellis delivers another nail-biting psychological thriller with THE BEST LIES. This is a fast-paced, intricately wound story that kept me on the edge of my seat throughout. Told from multiple timelines and perspectives, and with several jaw-dropping twists along the way, this book will definitely keep you guessing from start to finish.

Read this one if you enjoy:
-morally gray/unreliable characters
-cat-and-mouse games

-crime fiction
-surprise twists!

Thank you Putnan for the review copy of The Best Lies; this is another strong roller coaster kind of thriller from David Ellis. This is a perfect crime/mob themed suspense for fans of those genres and for fans of this author! I might have liked the twists a bit more in last year's Look Closer but I am here to applaud an author who can develop strong suspense reads using a range of subthemes and tropes in the suspense and thriller world.
Stand outs
1. Pacing, Ellis for me is a master at keeping me hooked and making a good read feel fast but also satisfying!

2. Well developed plot, I loved how the pieces of this story came together, I didn't feel like the book was too convoluted with twists and turns that sometimes creep into thrillers.

3. As noted, a nice expansion into different kinds of themes as compared to what I see in the standard summer beach thrillers, I like a good crime story once or twice a year and this one is perfect!

I was nervous about this one because all of the reviews were saying it was nothing like Look Closer which was one of my top books of 2023. And it did take me a little while to get into this, but Ellis is still just as good. This story was so intricately wound around various characters. I can't imagine how hard it must be to wrap it all up with a neat bow, but someone he manages to do it.

David Ellis once again knocked it outta the park with this one! He can do no wrong! I loved Look Closer and wouldn’t shut up about it for months, so when I saw this one I was hopeful it would be just as good! While it isn’t quite as twisty, it had some wild reveals that I could never have predicted! I loved the MC, Leo, who is a diagnosed pathological liar with an amazing sense of humor that is evident from the start. The way Ellis comes up with these characters and connecting them is truly awe inspiring. I was yelling and gasping while walking around listening to this, getting interesting looks from my family 🤪 This one has multiple POVs, but getting inside Leo’s head was my favorite! The other characters were merely supporting actors for him! I really enjoyed the flashbacks, allowing us little snippets into the character’s pasts and keeping the readers begging for more! I didn’t even read the synopsis of this one, anything with David Ellis as an author will be automatically read by me, so I recommend going in blind!

This was my first book by this author and it won’t be the last. This book gives off mission impossible vibes which might be good for some and might not be for others. If undercover spies, missions, and espionage is your jam than you will love this book. I was expecting more of a psychological thriller. I plan to read another one of this authors books before deciding if they are not for me or not. This book felt more like watching a movie then reading a book. It was enjoyable but would have been better if it was more psych thriller then spy book.

David Ellis does it again! This book was diabolical. I really was blown away. The author had a lot to live up to because Look Closer was such a runaway hit. I can’t imagine that kind of pressure but he really knocked it out of the park. I started off a little confused and then things really started to come together. This was also just a pure psychological thriller which are hard to come by. It was amazing. This book delved into our main characters troubled childhood and gave a lot of back story which was great. Leo Balanoff might just be the standout character of the year. We know Leo is a liar, but there were a whole host of other characters in this book that were also liars. Possibly better liars than him. This book had a very intricate plot and had so many things going on. It was well wrote with very well-developed characters. A definite must read!

The Best Lies by David Ellis

The Best Lies by David Ellis is a gripping thriller that kept me hooked from start to finish. The story follows Leo, a pathological liar and attorney, Andi, his ex-girlfriend who now works in security, and Chris, an ambitious FBI agent. When a crime boss is murdered and Leo’s fingerprints are found at the scene, he’s forced to go undercover for the FBI. The plot twists and turns as secrets unravel and the characters' lives intertwine.
Told from multiple points of view and timelines, the story is complex but never confusing. Each character and piece of the puzzle is essential. The book is fast-paced and filled with unexpected twists, making it an exciting read. Despite some dark themes, such as sex trafficking, the storytelling is captivating and well-written. David Ellis has crafted an intricate and compelling thriller that will keep you guessing until the very end.
A must-read for thriller fans!

Very grateful to the publisher for my copy, opinions are my own

The book follows 3 different characters: Leo (attorney and a diagnosed pathological liar), Andi (Leo’s ex-girlfriend and works security at QCI biotech) and Chris (FBI agent and a cancer survivor). One day, a ruthless crime boss, Cyrus Balik, is murdered and Leo’s fingerprints are found at the scene and weapon, but did he do it? Leo’s life becomes more complicated when the FBI wants him to work undercover, and he is also found being involved in a biotech heist. As the stories of the 3 are told, they begin to intertwine and it becomes clear that nothing is how it appears. But who is the best liar?

Told in multiple timelines and points-of-view, the story never got too convoluted. Every character was important, and every piece of the puzzle was essential to the story. It was a fast-paced thriller filled with twists and turns that I didn’t see coming, and it held my attention from beginning to end.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Group Putnam for the advanced reader’s copy in exchange for an honest review!

The Best Lies

4/5 stars

After reading Look Closer (highly recommend!), I was so excited to read The Best Lies! This book is a psychological thriller about crime that will make you question which narrator is reliable. I really enjoyed all of the twists and I did not predict the ending! I am excited to add more David Ellis books to my TBR!

Thank you David Ellis, NetGalley, and G. P Putnam's Sons for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

This book was SO smart and I loved it! I was actually thinking while reading that Mr. Ellis must be a genius because my mind could never come up with such an intricate plot that actually comes together and makes sense. Speaking of the plot, I don't think I'll even describe it for fear of giving anything away. But if you loved his last book 𝙇𝙤𝙤𝙠 𝘾𝙡𝙤𝙨𝙚𝙧 then definitely plan on reading this one too. 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝘽𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙇𝙞𝙚𝙨 may even be twistier but it has more of a cat and mouse with law enforcement and organized crime vibe rather than a domestic thriller.

In my opinion the synopsis doesn't give too much away so if you'd rather check it out first, that's totally fine. I went in blind and rather enjoyed not having prior knowledge but whatever you prefer is fine! Regardless, I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys multiple POV crime thrillers.

Thank you to NetGalley and Putnam Books for providing me an eARC in exchange for my honest thoughts.

The Best Lies by David Ellis
7/23/24
Genre: Thrillers
5 ⭐️’s
Thank you, Penguin Group & NetGalley
Honestly I’m not sure how to write my 5 ⭐️ review on this amazing ARC that I was privileged to be able to read of David Ellis’ newest book that came out today… In my honest opinion it read like an episode of Law & Order SVU which I absolutely love so I definitely fell in love with this amazing book on more than one level. It captivated me and hooked me from the beginning making me want to read more and more until I finished! David Ellis has a way with his words and writing style that makee someone like me want to read more than just one of his books.
The Best Lies isn’t just an ordinary storyline but it has so many twists and turns I just didn’t see coming or thought one way and this book proved me wrong time and time again! Given that I felt like this book was an episode of Law & Order SVU it does come with some triggers like sex trafficking, holding girls/women hostage, etc but even with all the triggers it’s an amazing read that left me wanting more as I continued to read on. I’d call this book a stunning and wonderfully written captivating first read of David Ellis’ but absolutely will not be my last book by him!
QOTD: Do you have any fears?! If so, tell me one of them?!
