I always worry with books like this that it will feel generic because it is such a popular theme. But I was pleasantly surprised.
I really liked the main character, Cordelia. And I loved her relationship with Diane and Sugar/Samantha. I feel like more books are focusing on female friendships now and I’m all for it.
I could see this being a series. Not sure how many I would read because it could get repetitive. But for a debut novel this is great!
Definitely check it out if you enjoy satirical thrillers. Thank you to NetGalley, Emma C. Wells, and Poisoned Pen Press. I have written this review voluntarily.
This was a fantastic debut almost like Carrie Bradshaw and Dexter had a kid!! One a few books that just kept me up all night because i just had to know how it ended!! I’m really hoping for more of Cordelia Black!! I found my shelf really rooting for Cordelia despite she’s a murderer and i did find some parts funny. A must read!!!
THIS GIRL’S A KILLER was a really fun and fresh read with a twist on serial killers and an easy to like, relatable narrator in Cordelia. There were some humorous moments as various events collided quickly and the book was easy to read despite the length. It did start feeling a little outlandish at certain points with some over the top scenarios and coincidences, especially towards the end.
Thanks to NetGalley and Poisoned Pen Press for the opportunity to read and review THIS GIRL’S A KILLER.
Lovable Serial Killer with a ride or die BFF. This read was fun and I enjoyed Cordelia Black, her Dexter-ish code, love of shoes and found family. Story was well paced, audio narrator was easy to follow and enjoyable. I look forward from more from Emma C. Wells.
There is nothing more gratifying then a story of bad people getting what they deserve.
This was a good book. A little slow at times but the story itself was awesome. She's like her own little female Dexter and I'm here for it.
Cordelia Black was just out there doing the lords work! LoL 😂
*Thank you to the Netgalley and publisher for allowing me the opportunity to read and review this book early. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This Girl’s a Killer⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Cordelia Black is a successful business woman who loves three things: her found family, her hairdresser and killing bad men. She’s a successful pharmaceutical rep that makes great money and loves to spoil herself with designer items. By night, she takes care of men that always seem to escape the justice system. She always has a plan, which is why everything always goes accordingly. That is until her pharmaceutical company is under investigation, her best friend introduces her to a guy that seems shady, and her neighbors dog can’t just say in its own yard. Things start to unravel and Cordelia finds herself in a mess.
This debut thriller by Emma C. Wells was so good! I was hooked immediately and didn’t see the twist that was coming. This book was giving me Dexter and You vibes. Cordelia’s character was very interesting and had so many different emotions. I also liked all of the side characters and seeing how things would unravel with each of them. I’m hoping there will be a second book coming soon to follow up with how this one ended. Overall, it was really good and perfect for those who like thrillers with a strong FMC.
Thank you to NetGalley and Poisoned Pen Press for my advanced readers copy. This is my honest and voluntary opinion.
I read this book with a reading group, and we all found this read to be very enjoyable and the characters to be very unlikeable. I would recommend this to any of my thriller readers as it was executed perfectly. Loved the plot and thought it was tied up nicely at the end! All in all, had a great time reading and will be looking forward to more from this author.
This one wasn’t for me in the end. Her justification for her murderous night gig seemed to barely mask that she actually just enjoys it. Less vigilante and more an excuse for violence. While I’m all for female rage, this was little gratuitous for me and repetitive.
Didn’t work for me, but it might for you! I hear it’s for Dexter lovers. Thanks Netgalley and Poisoned Pen Press for the arc.
If you’re looking for a dark comedic thriller with a vigilante murderess, this book is it.
The FMC is Cordelia Black, a pharmaceutical sales rep with a secret. By day, she is the epitome of professionalism, but by night, she is a vigilante who targets men who have escaped justice.
The writer blends humor and suspense, creating a main character who is both relatable and complex. The FMC’s internal struggle between her desire for a normal life and her need to right wrongs adds a sense of realism in an otherwise unrealistic life. The plot has good twists, keeping the reader on the edge of their seats as Cordelia navigates the dangerous world she's created for herself.
Cordelia's best friend Diane and her goddaughter, add humanity to her character, balancing the darker elements of the story.
The writing is fast paced and engaging, making this a nice read for fans of psychological thrillers and revenge stories.
For a debut novel, this is entertaining read that leaves readers anticipating her next work.
I really enjoyed this book! It gave off a female Dexter kind of vibe! The characters were interesting, Cordelia and her friend Diane have such a fun and loving friendship. The author wrote this book in such a way that I found it hard to put the book down!
Cordelia wants to rid the world of bad men, and when she finds herself in an iffy situation I just had to keep reading to find out how she'd wiggle her way out of it! She was such an interesting character to read about! If you're looking for a fun thriller, please check out this book! It was such a fun ride. I found myself rooting for Cordelia. I really enjoyed the authors writing style.
Thank you Poisoned Press for the advanced copy!
What a great debut thriller from Emma C. Wells!
I loved the friendship made family of Cordelia, Diane, and Sugar. You can feel how much Cordelia loves her best friend and goddaughter, and there’s nothing she wouldn’t do for them. Including killing bad men 👀
Cordelia is so strong, literally and in spirit. Not that I’m condoning what she does, but I love that she has a reason for what she does, and works methodically to target those who are not wholly undeserving. I love her bad B energy 💪🏼
Inherently dark with all the killing of bad men, yet with great humor. I loved Cordelia even when I thought she could’ve done a few things differently. I thought this was a great book, and an impressive debut!
Thank you Poisoned Pen Press and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Sometimes I just want a cozy-esque thriller with some revenge fantasy motifs, and THIS GIRL'S A KILLER definitely delivers those kinds of vibes. I enjoy the idea of a girlboss business woman being a serial killer of predatory men under cloak of darkness, and I enjoyed some of the witty and snippy dialogue and inner thoughts of Cordelia. But I also didn't find Cordelia or really any of the characters to be much more than two dimensional characters, which was a bit of a disappointment. Overall I found this book fun and frothy, but not really reinventing the wheel or anything like that.
Really enjoyed this thriller! Love the main character and how bad ass she is! And the setting! Highly recommend for those who love female killers.
I did not like our FMC but also did? She was annoying but a total badass killer queen (literally). I couldn't put this down and ate up every page. Highly recommend for anyone who loves a good thriller with a strong but flawed FMC.
This Girl's a Killer by Emma C. Well - WOW! This book was everything you want in a thriller. The narrator was fantastic. I could not stop listening! So many twists and turns, dark and unputdownable! This is definitely a must read!!!
"This Girl's a Killer" is a sharp and thrilling ride through the life of Cordelia Black, a captivating anti-heroine who operates in the morally gray areas of justice. Emma C. Wells delivers a bright and biting narrative that blends dark humor with a compelling exploration of ethics, loyalty, and the consequences of one’s choices.
Cordelia is not your typical protagonist. By day, she’s a polished pharma rep, navigating the corporate world with confidence and charm. But by night, she transforms into a vigilante, targeting the bad men of South Louisiana who think they’ve escaped justice. Her motto, “He had it coming,” speaks volumes about her mindset and the twisted sense of righteousness that drives her.
Wells does an exceptional job of fleshing out Cordelia’s character, making her both relatable and deeply flawed. Her love for her chosen family and her meticulous approach to her dual life create a fascinating dichotomy that keeps readers invested. The pacing is brisk, and the plot is woven with tension as Cordelia’s carefully constructed world begins to unravel, particularly when her best friend starts dating a man who raises red flags.
The author’s writing is sharp and engaging, with a clever blend of wit and suspense. The dialogue sparkles, often infused with a biting humor that highlights Cordelia’s confidence and charisma. Yet, beneath the humor lies a deeper commentary on justice, morality, and the lengths one might go to protect loved ones. The stakes rise as Cordelia grapples with the implications of her actions, leading to moments of introspection that add depth to the otherwise adrenaline-fueled narrative.
The thriller aspect is expertly crafted, with a series of twists that keep readers guessing. Just when you think you know where the story is headed, Wells throws in surprises that challenge Cordelia's convictions and force her to confront her own flaws. The tension mounts as she faces not only external threats but also the internal struggle of reconciling her dual identity.
"This Girl's Killer" is not just a thriller; it’s a thought-provoking exploration of morality and the complexities of human nature. Wells invites readers to consider what it truly means to seek justice and the price one pays for taking the law into their own hands.
In conclusion, Emma C. Wells has crafted a gripping and thought-provoking thriller that will keep readers on the edge of their seats. Cordelia Black is a heroine unlike any other, and her story is one that lingers long after the final page. For those who enjoy dark humor, complex characters, and a thrilling plot, this book is a must-read!
This was such a fun ride! Great pacing, drama, humor and likeable characters. I was hooked right from the first page and couldn't put it down. The main character - Cordelia is very loyal to her best friend and her daughter, she will do everything for them. She has everything under control....well until she doesn't :)
The best part of the book was when things just started to fall apart for her. I think I actually giggled a little. Kudos to the author for adding some humor to the dark topic of this book.
One of the best books I have read in 2024. Highly recommend it!
Thank you Poison Pen Press and the author for a free ARC copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Love the idea of this - a vigilante serial killer full of feminine rage. It sounded too good not to pick up.
Cordelia was an interesting character - a woman coming from a traumatic childhood who transformed into the woman she always wanted to be, and in the process became a protector of the vulnerable. Something she didn’t have as a young person. She was definitely unhinged, but in a good way? And when it comes to her chosen family, her best-friend and god daughter, there is one rule - don’t hurt them.
This was darkly comedic book, that was fun to read. There were parts of internal rambling and I did feel like a lot of time was spent among up the ending, but it was very anticlimactic. Overall it was a decent read.
Thank you so much for this ARC! I LOVED this one.
Initially, when I tried to read it I had to put it down, was not in the right mood to enjoy it. Few weeks later, checked out the audio book and boy did it hit perfectly! I typically don't love a sole first person narrator for a book so the audio made it feel varied.
A woman vigilante will always be top notch in my book. Her work was "necessary" (don't come for me!) and I rooted for her every step of the way. She was a fierce protector of Diane and Sugar.
This was a fun edge of your seat read with lots of drama. Loved it!
I’ve had the pleasure of reading a lot of good books this year. So far, I’ve been surprised and impressed more often than not, and this last read was no exception.
When I received an invitation from Poisoned Pen Press to read This Girl’s a Killer, I was a little apprehensive, as I don’t usually read horror or “scary” books. But I loved Finlay Donovan, so I decided to give it a try. I’m so glad I did because I was absolutely blown away. This is why I love new authors; you never know what you’re going to find.
Cordelia Black isn’t crazy. She’s organized. She’s punctual. She has a killer wardrobe. She loves her best friend and goddaughter. She isn’t crazy. She’s just… Karma.
Everything is going just fine until it isn’t. Watching Cordelia’s perfect world fall apart actually gave me anxiety while making me laugh. It was an interesting paradox. This book is dark, twisty, and funny.
I cannot wait to see what Emma Wells comes up with next.
