I have been lucky enough to read this book recently! I was pulled in so quickly and whizzed through the book!! Kept my on my toes and was annoyed when I had to put it down to get back to reality and not the next chapter! I couldn't get through it fast enough, so many excellent twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat. I gasped at all the twists that just kept being thrown my way.
AJ the amazing books just keep on coming! Thanks for all your hard work and the benefits we get to reap because of you! You should be so proud of your work.
Utterly amazing! If you are looking for a great psychological thriller that is interesting, fast paced and all-consuming, I highly recommend you pick up a copy of "How Can I Trust You?"
Ashley came from a family where her father cheated. She has trust issues now brought into her marriage with Danny. Her husband's childhood best friend has been murdered at a party and Danny was standing over her, holding a hammer. Did he kill her? While the police are interrogating him, his wife is digging into things at home and doubting how honest her husband has been with her. Too many unknown questions and lies are adding up. An excellent read! Only thing lacking is son, Elliott is supposed to be nine years old and his character seems to act six. This kept bugging me. BUT i totally loved rest of characters and story.
Wow this book was brilliant. As with all of Amanda's books this one had me gripped from page 1 and I couldn't put it down til I found who the killer was.
Amanda is an incredible author who has the ability to suck you into the pages and I was right there in the action with this one too.
I can't wait for the next book from Amanda, I already know its going to be a belter.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Contemporary drama set in a small village. Who killed Lucy? Plenty of twists and turns, who is lying, who is telling the truth?
This book was a good read. It was a little slower paced than I typically like, but it was still interesting and enjoyable. The ending was really good! Overall, I did like the story and would recommend to other readers.
This is an unputdownable story about following your hunches no matter what the result might be, Ashley and Danny are happily married and work together in a home design business. They never keep secrets from each other. Or do they? At a birthday party for their son's friend something terrible happens and Danny gets arrested. He was found with the body and the bloody hammer used to kill Lucy - his childhood friend. Then Ashley finds some suspicious things like a post it note, a safe in the office they share, a phone, an iPad and stacks of money. Trying to unravel where all these items came from makes her start to question everything she knows about her husband. What is he hiding? And why? As the secrets are uncovered Ashley is determined to get to the truth. But the truth will destroy everything she has believed.
The twists are huge and there is a heart stopping ending to all the unanswered questions. This book will keep you reading. until late into the night to get to the truth. This is another 5 star book for A J Campbell and I highly recommend it.
Another great read by AJ Campbell. She has a fabulous writing style that draws the reader in and makes you emotionally engaged with the Ashley, the protagonist.
When Lucy is killed at her daughter's birthday party, Dan, Ashley's husband is arrested for her murder. This is a cautionary tale that goes to show that no one truly knows those closest to us. I raced through this book in a couple of days and really enjoyed Ashley's journey to discover the truth about what happened on that fateful day.
Thank you to AJ campbell, Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC of this book.
this book had me absolutely engrossed from the very beginning. the author's smooth, easy-to-follow writing style kept the story flowing at a perfect pace. it wasn't all twisty according to me, but rather a slow burn that masterfully built suspense with every page. especially ‘Ashley’, the main character, well, i really clicked with her. she felt real, you know? like someone you could encounter at the grocery store. i was right there with her, especially when her husband got nicked for murdering his childhood mate, ‘Lucy’! the secrets that came bubbling to the surface after years of marriage were shocking! it made you question the very foundation of trust, particularly within a relationship. this internal struggle was undeniably one of the most captivating aspects of the novel.
the whole close-knit village with a dark secret vibe? right up my street! the characters all seemed suspicious at some point, which kept me guessing like mad.
overall, this was a cracking good read! while i can't delve deeper without spoiling any major plot points, if you enjoy slow-burn suspense that keeps you on the edge of your seat, then this book is for you. i highly recommend it and will definitely be seeking out more from this author in the future.
💋 thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for letting me have a go at this book in exchange for my honest review.
🌸 how i felt while reading:
🫧 Ashley, the main character, felt really relatable, at times. it was easy to connect with her.
🫧 i loved how Ashley was determined to solve the murder mystery. her search for answers kept me glued to the pages.
🫧 it even got me to the point where i was giving everyone the side-eye. every single person/character seemed a bit suspect, you know? like, i couldn't help but wonder if they were somehow involved in whatever was going on.
🫧 and by the end, the title of the book really hit home: how can i trust you? it just goes to show that people aren't always who they seem.
I think I may be the only person who didn’t love this book! Personally I just hated how things were so slow and not adding up. It does add up in the end, but I also guessed the ending so I didn’t enjoy it just because I saw everything coming. Honestly I really just wanted the ending to have my jaw on the floor like most psychological thrillers!
This book starts with a car crash, and that’s kind of the theme of the book - one day, the lives of several people turn into absolute trainwrecks. I wouldn’t compare this to “The Housemaid” or “The Perfect Marriage” like the synopsis does, but this was a definitely a good mystery/thriller.
Ashley, Danny and their son, Elliot, have a birthday party to attend. Danny’s best friend since childhood, Lucy, is having people over for her daughter Grace’s big day, and it was a picture perfect one. Elliot and Grace are also best friends, and everything was great…until it wasn’t.
Ashley was in the bouncy house with Elliot when she hears something. She shook it off, but when she thought she heard another cry, she started looking around. Upon investigation, she finds Lee, Lucy’s husband, howling in horror. She looks inside the garage to see Danny standing over Lucy’s body, covered in blood and holding a hammer.
Immediately the police are called, and of course Danny is the logical suspect - except for the fact that this is his best friend since childhood, he’s never had a temper, and he’s just as devastated as anyone else. Soon though, very soon, he is brought to the police station for questioning, which lets Ashley do some digging on her own.
I won’t tell you what she found, except for what’s revealed in the synopsis: her husband was seeing Lucy behind her back, messaging her from a burner phone, and then the nail in the coffin - an appointment Ashley found in his calendar. An appointment he made with a divorce lawyer. Were Danny and Lucy having an affair? They’re like siblings; Ashley didn’t think much of how touchy and close they are. Then, when Ashley starts looking in their office, she finds something that will be VERY hard for Danny to explain.
The mystery part of this was great, leaving the reader constantly wondering if it was really Danny who killed Lucy. Ashley found some juicy stuff, and all of the evidence seems to make no sense…until the ending, when everything is brought to light. I feel like this didn’t want to be a popcorn thriller, but the writing made it that way, and that’s my only complaint. 3.5 stars, rounded up for being quite entertaining.
(Thank you to Bookouture, A.J. Campbell and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my review. This book is slated to be released on April 8, 2024.)
Protagonist Ashley has moved from London to the countryside with her husband Danny and their son Elliot.
Ashley finds village life claustrophobic, but that’s the least of her problems. Because when a friend is murdered at a child’s birthday party, Danny is found standing over the victim's blood-soaked body holding a hammer.
Is he guilty? That’s the question that feeds the narrative drive throughout this roller coaster ride of a thriller.
Much misdirection and plenty of red herrings ensure it’s impossible to guess the culprit’s true identity. I certainly found my suspicions flip-flopping between several of the central characters throughout the book.
Ashley is a sympathetic protagonist and I was rooting for her all the way. And the ending was so tense I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough.
All in all, a supremely satisfying read: addictive, twisty and gripping. I have long been a fan of AJ Campbell and I think How Can I Trust You? is her best yet!
Wow! I was hooked from the beginning and couldn’t put this one down! What a ride of twists and more twists! The characters absolutely came to life with their personalities. Highly recommend!
I really like AJ Campbell's writing style, so I was looking forward to reading this one. The concept had me really intrigued too, and I was thinking constantly throughout the book about what on earth I would do if I was in Ashley's position.
I really liked how we were slowly drip-fed more and more information throughout the book, rather than saving all the twists until the end. It meant that the book was well paced and kept me turning the virtual pages. Alongside Ashley, I never knew which characters to trust and found myself coming up with multiple theories about what was going on.
The ending was satisfying and answered all of my questions. Overall, I would definitely recommend this book.
Another addictive book from A J Campbell. Her books always have me hooked and this was no exception. A twisty and surprising story that certainly made me keep turning this pages, dying to know what would happen next.
Ashley is devastated when her best friend is murdered, and it appears that her husband is responsible. Danny is found covered in blood with the murder weapon in his hand, but claims that he is innocent. Ashley cannot believe that Danny is capable of murder, but she also thought that she knew everything about him. The more she looks, the more she finds his secrets. It doesn’t look good.
I had no idea where this was going. I kept changing my mind about who I thought did it and why. I could feel the tension, Ashley’s sadness and anger. Really felt for her, with the whole village talking about her behind her back.
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for my advanced copy of this book to read. Published on April 8th.
An unputdownable thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat. So many twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the end.
I have yet to read a thriller by AJ that I didn’t love, so when I saw this available on Netgalley I knew I was in for another wild ride!
The action starts right away in this one, and while it seemed like a cut and dry murder scene to start, I soon had a ton of questions about how and why events happened the way they did.
I had a hard time trusting Danny or Ashley while reading, but I was dying to know if their marriage would survive this traumatic and life altering event. This was the perfect thriller to bring me out of my reading slump and had me turning pages almost as fast as I could read them!
Thank you to AJ & Netgalley for my ecopy to read and honestly review!
It is always a fantastic day when A.J. Campbell asks me to read her latest and greatest. I know I am in for a ride and this one takes the cake. I was at the edge of my seat, biting my nails, heart banging in my chest. This is a bingeable read that did not let me down. The characters quickly capture your attention, the setting in a small English town sets the tone, and the plot is phenomenal!
Ashley and her small family have moved to her husband's hometown located in the English countryside. It is far removed from the heartbeat of London, that Ashley is still craving. They are growing their business and settling into their new norm. This all changes in a blink of an eye, when Danny is found holding a hammer over his best friends bleeding body. There is no chance Danny hurt Lucy, he would not hurt a fly. As Ashley begins to dig into his emails, things do not add up. It appears as though Danny has been lying to her. Her mind is spinning and all she can do is try to get to the bottom of what exactly Danny has been up to. Before her small family of three is ripped apart.
This book blew me away. The ending is fantastic, and the twists and turns had me going in circles. I would not expect any less from Campbell. I devoured this one as quickly as I possibly could, work gets in the way too much for my reading. If you have not read any of Campbell's books you need to. Thank you so much A.J. for my copy!
A pacey thriller with lots of twists and turns to keep you guessing. Very well written, the plot and characters are developed really well. A very well crafted page-turner
