I really wanted to be invested in this tale. However for me there was a noticeable amount of repetition from the first book, such that I contemplated not finishing the story. Perhaps if there was more focus on the 'new' story it would have the interest better.
"Last One to Die" by Dana Perry delivers another riveting 5-star read, featuring the tenacious Nikki Cassidy of the FBI's Crimes Against Children Squad. Following her newfound fame for thwarting an online group of predators targeting young girls, Nikki is approached by a grieving mother seeking answers about her daughter. Returning to her hometown, Nikki dives into yet another harrowing investigation, determined to uncover the truth.
I thought this book was even better than the first in the series. Nikki is a great example of what the FBI should be doing, by putting her life on the line in the search for truth and justice. I was not expecting the twist when the true villain was revealed. If you are a fan of crime novels you need to read about Nikki Cassidy. I will definitely be reading the next book in this series.
Thanks to Bookouture, Dana Perry, and NetGalley for providing me with the opportunity to read this ARC and share my honest review.
OH, MY GOODNESS! I thought the first book was good, this was amazing! Such good twists and turns, the villain is so good. I could not read this one fast enough. I love when the plot is keeps you guessing, without being outlandish. Now off to read the next one!
Detective Nikki Cassidy is at it again when 2 new bodies of teenage girls pop up: one in Huntsdale (again) and one in a city hundreds of miles away. But are these cases connected?
This was a great, thrilling story just like book 1. It makes you wonder how many serial killers we pass unknowingly on a daily basis. The only downside to this story is 1. How Detective cassidy can't seem to leave men alone. And 2. How the author feels the need to reiterate information the reader already knows every chapter. Despite these things, I don't regret reading this book and plan to dive into book 3.
Btw, I deff didn't see that twist at the end coming. 😭
The Last One to Die is book two in the Detective Nikki Cassidy trilogy.
I really enjoyed the first book(besides the repetition) but the second one fell flat for me. The whole first half of the book seemed to be just everything that was in the first book. It took forever for the actual story to go on. I wanted to love it because I just love Nikki and Alex. I’m really hoping the last book will be better than this one.
Detecive Nikki Cassidy is apprehensive when a young girl who went missing turns up murdered. Is her sister's killer back? Nikki works overtime to find out. What she discovers may be closer to home than she would like. I dived into this book and I ended up reading it at a alarming pace as the mystery and tension intensified. Nikki is a very likeable and relatable character who has definitely had a hard past that has left her with evil demons. I trusted no one in this book and I eagerly questioned everything. It was a joy to work with Nikki to solve the mystery. It did get repetitive at times but I didn't mind at all because I was going over everything in my head several times anyway. A exciting new police procedural.
Nikki’s working on a cold case, when she gets brought into a new case with ties to her own tragedy. Two similar cases in different towns, years apart, keeps Nikki, &those working with her, on their toes!
I read this in one sitting! I’m already invested in this series after reading book 1. I knew there would be a great twist in the conclusion & I wasn’t disappointed!
I flew this one in one day!
Thank you, Dana Perry, Bookouture, & netgalley for my early copy! All opinions are my own.
*4.5 Stars*
Copy kindly received via NetGalley for an honest review.
A very interesting read and great characters. Nikki certainly gets herself into some difficult situations with her boss and the person she is trying to find because she's looking at so many different suspects. A bit of a surprise ending.
Nikki Cassidy is brought back to her hometown to try to solve the murders of missing girls. I’m glad this second book in the series was released the same day as the rest of the series because I was excited to read this one and it also ends on a cliffhanger that will make you jump right to book 3! A fast, fun read into police work and how to catch the killer. I really enjoyed the continuation of characters from the first book and loved watching them grow in this one.
I am a sucker for a detective novel and this one didn’t disappoint. I love a small town, cold case murder with a female detective and lots of great side characters! I actually didn’t read the first book in this series but I found it easy enough to follow along and be read as a standalone book. I enjoyed the twists and fast pace and found the serial killer taunting the detective a unique touch. I liked the romance between Nikki and Chief Nolan, and the partnership between her and her FBI partner Alex. Overall, great mystery with lots of unpredictable moments. 3.75/5⭐️
The main character can be a bit of a mixed bag, perhaps it’s the pesky guilty feelings that make her so unlikeable at times. In this sense the character development is on point. Nikki struggles with the way others perceive her part in Caitlin’s death, and indeed keeping the emotional turmoil under wraps can be a bit of a task. It probably explains her lack of impulse control when it comes to thoughts and actions sometimes.
Without giving too much away I think tracking patterns of access, vulnerability and groupings of potential victims, is quite important in this book. Perpetrators often look for specific similarities that make a possible victim more susceptible to falling prey to a predator. The patterns that make non-predators want to help, protect and safeguard. Too many victims fall through the cracks.
On a side-note – I just don’t get her fascination with Weller. The man was such a red flag, slightly too obsessed with what should have been. I understand the guilt, but perhaps her being in the middle of another tragedy is another way of validating her own negative self-image. Nikki seems to be attracted to men who aren’t always fully available – safety valve or self-preservation?
In this second book of the Nikki Cassidy series the past is still the main motivator, and I think there were too many similarities to certain key elements of the first book. Unless there is a plot purpose it just looks a bit repetitive.
Let’s hope Nikki can move beyond the depths of betrayal and the depravity of predators, and even find the perfect partner going forward.
This was a slow burn for me. I do understand that this book is part of a series and I read the first one so I feel like I had to wait forever for something to happen. A lot of time was spent catching up on the first book. There was a lot of repetition as well.
I am thoroughly enjoying this series. That being said.....I am hoping that soon we will be focusing on other cases and other areas very soon.
Detective Nikki Cassidy is back this gripping, fast paced crime procedural. The drama and intensity picks up where the first book left off and goes full throttle through this entire plot! This book was even better than the first one! I was unable to put this one down, as I had to know who the killer was. The author did a great job making this one even more fast paced than the first book. There are also nods to the first book and some of the unresolved/questionable storylines present in the initial book. This is book two in the series. This can be read as a standalone, but I highly recommend reading book one first.
This was a very fast one to get through. I found myself questioning everyone and everything. I played Detective right along with Nikki. I am obsessed with Nikki. She is a very likeable character that has her flaws like we all do. She is a great detective, and she is relatable and personable. I love a strong female main character that is a boss at what she does! There were unpredictable twists and turns with a major twist towards the end. If you like thrillers and crime procedurals, I definitely recommend this book and the entire series!
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Last One to Die is book two in the Detective Nikki Cassidy series by Dana Perry.
This is another intriguing story that kept me flipping the pages.
It's brilliantly twisty, fast paced with such an addictive plot and a cast of great characters.
The twists and turns in this book are jaw dropping. Keeping the reader hooked till the very end.
This was a fast-paced, easy to read & hard to put down thriller.
Thank You NetGalley and Bookouture for your generosity and gifting me a copy of this amazing eARC!
Page-turner that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Fast-paced and attention getting and keeping , it keeps you guessing till the very end. 5 star recommend! Loved this! Must read for sure!
I recently read and, unfortunately, really disliked The Nowhere Girls. Consequently, I'm opting not to continue on with this series.
This series feels like a continuation of one case. Which makes it feel more in depth than many reads but also can feel a bit repetitive. I still enjoyed this one as I do quite like the main character and her mind. There were still twists and turns and some seriously dark situations. Overall I’m still giving this a 4 star review just be aware that all 3 books in this series are very similar to each other
FBI agent Nikki Cassidy is back in another gripping, shocking, and hard to put down book. In Last One to Die, Nikki is investigating the murder of fourteen-year-old schoolgirl Jessica Stanley. Nikki can't help but be reminded of her sister's murder. She is determined and will stop at nothing to find the killer! But what if the killer finds here? The killer is crafty and taunts her with an email hinting at more victims.
I had a hard time putting this book down as I had to know whodunit. I was not prepared for the shocking, jaw dropping reveal! I did not see that one coming at all!
This book proved to be a fast read which kept me on my toes and doing my own detective work along with Nikki. This is book two in a new series but can be read as a stand-alone but as this is only the second book, I recommend reading the first book as well.
A case within a case within another case is the best way to describe the second Nikki Cassidy mystery.
Nikki is back in her home town and in Pennsylvania trying to track down clues in a 20 year old case.
The first half of the book was fairly routine although I thought Nikki pulled a dumb stunt with another character. She doesn’t have a good radar for steering clear of troublesome relationships.
However, Perry pulled the reading rug right out from underneath my rump with a huge twist in the plot.
I was gobsmacked by it.
The ending left me hanging but I can head right into the third book!
