I really love this book. As a person who has been trying to learn chess for so long, this was super helpful. I already knew the basics of chess, but getting helpful tips in strategy and tactics is super helpful. Now i might actually be able to put up a fight against my friends when i'm playing with them. The book coveres everything, from the basics of what the different pieces do, and how tohey move, to more advanced things such as tactics and different strategies that can be employed to win a match.
I love the way the questions are structured. It gives a lot of real life chess situations, that you might meet when playing. It makes you think in a strategic way, while also being able to visualize the situation. The answer key in the back is also super easy to follow.
Thank you so much to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
Winning chess from Viktori Ni is a great way to learn a new things for chess. It is a interactive way that helps you to learn how to play chess better. Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book and to learn for chess! Viktoria Ni must to continue to write many of these books!
My son loved this book! “Winning Chess Exercises for Kids” is incredibly well written with clear and colorful diagrams, instructions, tips, tricks, and fun historical facts about chess. Viktoria does a wonderful job writing with a younger audience in mind, but never making the reader feel like they are being spoken down to. She clearly communicates difficult concepts in an easy to read and understand way. I highly recommend this book to all chess aficionados (even adults who want to learn to play!)
I requested this book because both my son and I are in the beginning stages of learning chess.
I really love the layout with simple and easy to understand terms and descriptions.
The fact that the book is interactive is genius!!! Those of us that learn by doing instead of just visually will benefit greatly for this. We can now look at a picture of a board. Think what we would do and then check it instead of just reading words.
There will be a definite learning curve to put into play all the different ways to attack but this book is definitely starting us off on the right foot!
Thanks to NetGalley and Z kids for the advance copy.
Winning Chess Exercises for Kids is an appealing and accessible chess primer for all ages by Viktoria Ni. Released 19th March 2024 by Penguin Random House on their Zeitgeist imprint, it's 173 pages and is available in paperback and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links and references throughout.
This is a well rounded basic guide with introduction, rules, and good overviews over strategy for openings, midgame, developments, attacking, and endgame strategy. It's apparently aimed at youngsters circa 6-11 years, but honestly there are takeaways here for all ages.
The book is graphically appealing, with fun anthropomorphic chess pieces throughout (see cover art). The theory she presents is sound and it would work for solo study, tutoring, or more formal chess instruction in a class/group setting.
Five stars. It would be an excellent choice for public or school library acquisition, home use, and gift giving.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
"I thought this was really well written and I look forward to reading more from this author in the future. I think it will find readers at our library, so we will definitely be purchasing for the collection.
This book provides a good introduction to the foundations of chess in an accessible way. It introduces chess shorthand and jargon, but doesn't speak in code. Each section include exercises to test your knowledge using an easy-to-understand visual representation.
Winning Chess Exercises for Kids will be one of the best stepping stones to success in tournaments.
I have a child who is on the chess circuit and we could have really used this book a couple of years ago when we were first starting out! We tried out the exercises in the book today and really enjoyed it. There is always something to learn and as the book says the more you practice the better you will become.
This book is filled with wonderful examples both written and illustrative. They are easy to follow along even for the ultimate beginner. You will find the answers to all your burning questions in this one very handy book. The illustrations of the chess pieces are adorable and my 9 year old loved seeing them all, definitely helped with engagement.
We were gifted a digital copy of Winning Chess Exercises for Kids in exchange for a fair and honest review. Thank you Netgalley, Viktoria Ni, Zeitgeist and Penguin Random House for this opportunity.
I received this DRC from NetGalley.
Having diagrams to practice various scenarios was a helpful way to learn. I don't know if a young child could really learn chess just from reading this book, especially since some answers were explained more than other ones, but I think it was a good way for me, a grown adult, to learn the basics. I suppose for those little geniuses out there, who I imagine would be the only ones really trying chess anyway, this would work just fine as a starting point.
I was very excited for this book and it did not disappoint. I'm an adult who wants to learn chess beyond the absolute basics. This seemed like the perfect book. I think it is the nature of the game, but some of this came across as more complicated than I was prepared for. However the exercises were really solid and this is a well written book.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this eARC.

Terrific resource, especially for beginning chess players. Visual depictions of each move makes learning easy and fun. Great addition for individual learners and must have for libraries with kids chess programs
Written by an international master in chess, this book helps both beginners and advanced chess players play their best.
My 7 & 8 year old sons love to play chess with their dad, so this title caught my eye. The diagrams in the book offer exercises to test your knowledge and strategy. Kids can use this book to learn how to play chess for the first time. If they have experience playing chess, they can skip ahead to some of the more advanced exercises in the book. There is an answer key in the back of the book which gives not only the answer, but also an explanation.
I also have to mention how much I love the cover! The graphics are adorable and will appeal to children and parents alike!
The would be the perfect workbook for young chess lovers ages 8-12. I will be purchasing a physical copy for my boys.
I received an advance copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
A good starting point for children. Detailed and they will be able to learn thoroughly with this guide. I particular liked the questions and answers that engaged the audience.
I really like how this book is set up and formatted. The images and instructions are very clear and easy to understand. It also felt interactive, with lots of questions and the answer key at the back.
Overall, this book is super informative and goes beyond the basics. I know this book will be in demand in our libraries.
Great at explaining the rules so and how each piece is important in the game. I just think that strategy isn't something you can learn from a book, especially how to anticipate your opponent's moves. That is not this books fault, I'm just pointing it out. As a complete beginner I'm happy with all I learned.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for granting access to this wonderful book in exchange for my honest review.
As someone who has never played chess, but always wondered about it, I enjoyed this book. I learned a lot about chess. This book would definitely not be suited for very young readers though.

Winning Chess Exercises for Kids : Practice Moves, Tactics, and Strategies to Outsmart Your Opponent. This is a chess workbook primarily aimed at children from 8-12, but is a useful aid for anyone wanting to learn the game of chess. The book aims to help you learn faster, improve your ability to strategize and think about the game, in a fun and practical way. It is a good book for parents who want to brush up their own skills to help and play the game with their children. Overall a really useful resource.
I have never come across a book about this subject, and it is a good one for public libraries to have. It will appeal to our homeschoolers and conservative families who especially enjoy game time.
Because this is intended for ages 8-12, I would expect it to be more visually interesting.
I wonder how much of this is relevant for the true beginner.
I do like the question/answer format.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC. I will purchase for my library.
This book is great for kids and adults too. I am parent who never played chess. But, I have a kid who wants to learn chess. This book presents the rules in a simple manner so I can learn them and play with my kid.
