The fifth turtle!!! What? An amazing collection of turtle stories. Learning about Jenika was just incredible. This is a highly recommended comic compilation for all tmnt fans!
I didn't know there was a fifth turtle, so it was really interesting to get to read this. It was more violent than I was expecting, but really that's just cause I assumed TMNT = kids, but I know that's not actually the case based on others that I've read.
It has been a long time since I read a TMNT comic. This one was a lot of fun. They did a great job of providing backstory and growth to the fifth turtle, Jennika. I thought the art was strong throughout but it does always take time to adjust when there is a new section with a new art style. I think this will be popular on my high school shelves.
Thank you to NetGalley, IDW Publishing, and creators Kevin Eastman, Tom Waltz, Dave Wacther, Brahm Revel, Ronda Pattison, Jodi Nishijima, and Megan Huang for the opportunity to read this graphic novel in exchange for an honest review.
Jennika--The Fifth Turtle is a 350 page collection that includes the following issues featuring Jennika: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles issues #93–95, 2019 Free Comic Book Day issue, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Jennika #1–3 and Teenage Mutant Ninja: Jennika II #1–6. The graphic novel focuses solely on Jennika and her origin and experiences, though the TMNT IDW comics are still an on-going series.
The story dives deeper into the mutant sector of the world, which can be a bit harder to follow if you have not read the previous issues. Though this is the case, it's still put together in a way that makes it easy enough to follow Jennika's story as she progresses through the TMNT universe.
I found learning about Jennika to be very interesting, as I had never heard of her before this graphic novel compilation. Her color is yellow and she uses Wolverine-type claws. It is nice to have a female turtle too. While there are many readers and fans who are girls, I think this is the ultimate connection builder and image for the readership. A great collection and a great addition to the TMNT world.
Jennika is the first female Ninja Turtle to appear in the IDW TMNT Universe and is a fascinating addition to the TMNT mythos as the series shifted to a more character driven storyline. Admittedly, she didn't have a lot to do prior to her mutation, but they've made sure that since she is now the Fifth Turtle, her character has been incredibly well developed over all the issues collected here.
Special Thanks to IDW Publishing and Netgalley for the digital ARC. This was given to me for an honest review.
