Haunting License is the third book in the Haunted Haven series. I loved the first book, Be My Ghost, and the second, High Spirits, and I love this one just as much.
While Maureen and Finn are out on a morning walk, she sees a body floating in the water. Officer Hubbard confirms that it's a murder. Maureen tries to not investigate but finds some interesting things in a trunk belonging to her benefactor. Also in the trunk is a flyer for a fishing tournament that she revives to boost tourism. With the death of a charter boat captain and a fishing tournament, what could go wrong?
I really have a lot of fun reading this series. Love Finn and Lorna. The characters are well thought out, the mystery is fun to solve. All in all, a perfect setting and story for a cozy mystery.
This was a pretty exciting case and I loved that Maureen actually had a sidekick to sleuth with. She and Kim got along so well, I was pulling for Kim to stay in the area and work, but you’ll have to read it and see. Those inn ghosts are too awesome especially Lorna since she’s the one who talks, a lot lol, and hangs out in Maureen’s apartment. Ghost Billy sometimes on piano always played something that went right along with what was going on, pretty cool.
Lots of successes happened for the inn with this third book. I just love Trent and Pierre’s characters! Their energy is off the charts and they’re just so much fun to read about while working their design and carpentry magic. It wasn’t really a surprise as to whodunit, it was the thrill of the chase in this book and more how the perp was caught. I can’t wait for Book 4 which I know for sure is on its way eventually.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book provided by Kensington Cozies via NetGalley, and my opinions are my own.
While I loved the first book in the series the second book was a bit slower going so I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I picked this one up. While it doesn't have that right book at the right time magic like the first one I definitely enjoyed it more than book 2. The mystery is more cohesive and while Maureen still has a long way to go to make Haven House secure again she's definitely got a plan - and support.
This is more of a how are they going to catch him than a whodunnit mystery but it was fun to be along for the investigative ride. Not only are we following along with Maureen as she figures out just who killed the local fisherman, what is in the trunk (and storage locker) left by the previous owner of the inn, how to put together a fishing tournament in a very limited amount of time, and deals with ghosts and a very cheerful Golden Retriever named Finn.
This is a fun light cozy mystery with a handful of ghosts and a fun slice of life of an Innkeeper in a rather quirky small town. I always enjoy Carol J. Perry's books and this was no exception!
This is a wonderful series, I love the Florida setting, the beachy hotel & the ghosts. It’s pure escapism. Maureen decides to relaunch a fishing tournament but also has to contend with a recent murder. Add in her still budding romance, some very interesting hotel guests & even archeology & you’ve got a great mystery.
This is an ideal summer/beach read series. The location sets the perfect atmosphere. One I can definitely recommend readers to seek out. Especially if you like a little supernatural element to your cozies. Buy all three & head outside!

I am enjoying this series and can't wait for the next one. I want to know what happens. The mystery kept get guessing. I like the characters and setting.
Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for my eARC in exchange for an honest review.
Haunting license brings together spirits that walk among the living, the past, and new adventures in the present. Maureen is still working on ways to keep Haven Inn in the black. In a trunk belonging to the past owner, she finds evidence of a fishing tournament and decides to hold one in the present.
As events unfold, past and present have some of the same dangers.
Haven Inn gets a gift shop. Returning guests and new guests make reading a pleasure.
I enjoyed reading Haunting License and visiting Florida once more.
Thanks to Netgalley and Kensington for the opportunity to read this book.
This was a nice cozy addition to this series.
It moved fairly quickly, has good mystery. We kinda know ahead of time who the bad person is and it was fun to read how they proved it. Love the dogs and cats in the story too. Maybe the next book can have more of the ghosts in it. Looking forward to the new one.
This book has a bit of everything for a cozy; not only a mystery, but also a cold case, ghosts, a slowly budding romance, some reno and new business vibes and a dramatic ending. I do love the concept behind this book, the MC inherits a crumbling inn in a quaint Florida town. She is doing whatever she can to drum up business and is also settling in with the town. She's also getting along with and used to the ghosts that live in the inn (and even her own suite). There was a lot of information about different bird species which I found quite interesting, without being overwhelming.
However, me personally, I feel like there is not enough character development for book 3 in a series, but many cozy readers don't find that necessary especially if they're mostly interested in the mystery aspect. Also, this one was very slow moving with a lot of side plots that mostly meandered a bit too much for me personally.
In the past I have listened to the audiobook and I do think that would help a bit with the pacing, so I recommend going that route if you can!
While “Haunting License” is the third book in Carol J. Perry’s Haunted Haven cozy mystery series, it is the first book in the series that I have read. I was intrigued by the premise of a haunted hotel and I did enjoy that part of the story as well as Florida innkeeper Maureen Doherty’s efforts to keep the hotel running as well as reading about her investigation into exactly why Penelope Josephine Gray left her the hotel. Unfortunately, as enjoyable as the haunted hotel storyline was, I felt that the mystery – the murder of a local fisherman – was slight and took a backseat to the rest of the storyline. There was no guessing whodunit – that was revealed to readers early on – and while there was a bit of excitement and sense of danger while the police tried to track down the culprit, in the end I was left wanting more in terms of the mystery.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley.
Could the murder of fishing charter captain Eddie be linked somehow to an old case? Maureen has been planning a fishing tournament, which she hopes will gin up more business for her inn, but first she's got to solve the case. Luckily, she's got her dog Finn, a good relationship with Officer Frank Hubbard, and best of all- ghosts Lorna and Reggie. This is the third in a lively paranormal cozy series but it will be fine as a standalone. I like it for, let's face it, the ghosts, especially Lorna. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. A good read.
Number three in the series does not disappoint!
Interesting characters & premise with a well written & plotted whodunit.
I highly recommend this series & hope there are more to come.

This book had a fun premise. I didn't realize this was the third book in a series; thankfully the author, Perry, filled in a few gaps along the way. Perhaps if I had started at the beginning of the series, I would have felt like I was able to get into the story a bit more. I liked this book, but felt as thought the mystery itself was somewhat pushed to the side at times. I had forgotten that we were supposed to focus on a murder, rather than the sub stories. the characters were likeable, but I didn't feel as thought I could connect to them or felt drawn into their stories.
Cute a s cozy mystery 3/5 stars.
Once again, Haven Florida innkeeper Maureen Doherty finds a dead body. This time it’s a local fisherman who doesn’t seem to have any enemies.
This cozy mystery is an easy read with a paranormal twist. My problem with the book was that the mystery often seemed to be shunted to the back burner.
This book was super cute! I love this series. A bit of a slow start but when it picked up I very much wanted to see where it would go. Can’t wait for the next book in this series!

Haunting License is the 3rd book in the series and was overall fun and enjoyable.
Perry really knows how to write likeable characters and a fun plot. This book was fun and could be read as a standalone.
This is the third book in the Haunted Haven mystery series, but it can be read as a standalone novel. Perry's books are always fun to sleuth along with the characters. Maureen is an easy character to like and root for, as she's kind and relatable. There are enough twists to keep the reader guessing, and the food mentions will have their stomachs rumbling!
Haunting License is a Summery, cozy murder mystery that was an easy, quick read. It was short and simple, and a lovely introduction into the genre of cozy mystery for me. I hadn't realized Haunting License was the third book in a series until after I started reading it. Luckily, Perry concisely recaps important information in a way that makes this book easy enough to read as a standalone without having read the other books previously. I'd like to read the first two books after having read the third one.
That being said, I didn't feel particularly compelled by the characters, and the plot had a bit of a jarring pace. For a murder mystery, the murder got sidelined and not treated as a major aspect of the story. The main character also appears to exposition in dialogue both to herself and to other characters who are already aware of the information Maureen states- an issue that I believe could be fixed by including more brief, internal monologues, rather than verbalizing everything.
Despite this, Haunting License was still exactly what you would expect from a cozy mystery. I ended up rating it 3.5/5 stars.
Maureen Doherty runs an inn where there are ghosts! Filled with awesome characters who are well developed. The mystery is solid and very enjoyable. A great cozy alone or read as a series in order. Thanks #Netgalley and #Kensington for the eARC in exchange for a honest review. All opinions are mine.
Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to receive this book for a honest review.
Haunting License by Carol J. Perry is cozy mystery and is the third book in the Haunted Haven Mystery series.
Although I had not read any books in this series I decided to give this one a try. And I enjoyed this one. It was a fun filled murder myser and will now have me going back to read the others in this series.I
The Characters
Maureen Doherty is an innkeeper with a lot on her plate! Aside from running her hotel, she’s also has a part time gig keeping the peace between the ghosts in her building. Oh.. and there’s the fact that she always gets involved with helping the local police force when there’s trouble afoot.
This is the 3rd book in the Haunted Haven mystery series and the book is filled with old favorites like Finn (Maureen’s golden retriever), Ted (hotel chef and Maureen’s love interest), and the front porch gang. But then there are new arrivals like Kim Salter, archeologist extraordinaire. And don’t forget the professional bird photographers, Harvey and Ron.
My Thoughts
The structure of this mystery is different from what I’m used to, but I wound up really enjoying Haunting License by Carol J Perry anyway. I don’t want to spoil anything mystery-wise, so I’ll just leave it at that.
I really enjoy the town of Haven. There are so many cool stores and townspeople. But my favorite part about Haven is Maureen’s Inn, which she randomly inherited from someone who she never met. (More on that in the previous books, obviously).
But my favorite part of this story is the ghosts! Haven is a haunted town, but the people around town don’t like to talk about it much because they don’t want ghost hunters and film crew to swarm the town. So while it’s a low key fact about Haven, Maureen is friendly with quite a few ghosts in her hotel.
And there are also a few that she’s heard stories about, but haven’t quite found yet. Like the woman in the bar that people keep telling her about.
Would I recommend Haunting License by Carol J Perry?
I definitely would. Maureen is a really likable main character and I love that she has an adorable sidekick in Finn. It makes me happy how she befriends so many guests that stay at her hotel. Haven is a really neat small town that I would love to visit if it was real! Sigh.
Thanks for reading my review of Haunting License by Carol J Perry! Thank you to Netgalley and Kensington Books for an advanced reader copy in exchange for my honest review.
