In this 3rd installment of the series, Detective Inspector Anjelica Henley and her squad at the Serial Crimes Unit are tasked with re-investigating the crimes that Andrew Streeter was convicted of 25 years ago. Streeter's conviction is being overturned and there are corruption allegations. Henley's former boss, the late DCI Rhimes, was the arresting officer, and it appears he made some very big mistakes in the investigation. Henley was close with Rhimes, and she also has a personal connection to the Streeter case, placing her under extreme stress. And that's before the killings begin again.

This series just gets better and better. It's gritty, yet emotional, and filled with suspense. There are some dangling threads that I can't wait to unravel in the next book! Thank you to Netgalley and Hanover Square Press for the review copy.

The girl on the cover gives me Sanaa Lathan vibes, which intrigued me more. Oh this was good. I love a good thriller of a murder coming back years later and starting again. Mainly because we rarely see ”justice” like this in real life.

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this eARC.

I liked this but wish it gave me a little bit more, wish I would have read the other books in the series before I jumped into this. Not sure if that will change my perspective of the book. This book reminded me of an episode of Criminal Minds. Now I will say the formatting was a little off putting but I've noticed that to be an issue sometimes with eARCs, so I just chucked it up to that.

The Kill List by Nadine Matheson is the third book in the Anjelica Henley crime fiction series. Matheson has once again crafted a complex, twisty crime thriller with excellent police procedural elements. Although this installment isn't as dark as the previous two books, Matheson still delivers a detailed and engrossing story, complete with enough gritty elements to keep the narrative fresh and engaging. It's definitely a page-turner.

One of the standout features of this series is the ongoing character development and the interactions between the main protagonist, Anjelica Henley, her partner Ramouter, and the rest of the team. True to her style, Matheson excels at crafting sharply drawn, believable, and relatable characters. I read a lot of crime fiction, and the Serial Crime Unit is one of my favorite investigative teams in the genre. They are a fun, smart, and engaging cast of characters.

My only critique of The Kill List is the uneven pacing in a few sections. One of Matheson's strengths is her exceptionally detailed narrative and focus on character development. In this novel, however, some of the characters' personal details felt slightly overdone. Despite this, these moments were infrequent, and the story quickly regained its momentum without missing a beat.

The Kill List is a fantastic police procedural crime thriller from an author I’ve eagerly recommended to my friends. The three books in the series are complex, featuring dark and compelling crimes. Matheson's attention to detail adds depth and authenticity to the investigative process, making her books both engaging and thrilling. With ongoing storylines that span the series, I recommend starting with The Jigsaw Man to fully appreciate the narrative's progression. The Kill List sets the stage nicely for the next installment in the series!

Many thanks to NetGalley, Hanover Square Press, and Nadine Matheson for an advance copy of this book to review. All opinions are my own.

I want to thank netgalley for giving me an opportunity to read this book before it's release. Unfortunately I only made it to chapter 10. The story concept was very intriguing, however, I did not like the writing format and layout. There were spaces where it wasn't needed. At first I thought it was spaced like you would a conversation but there were parts where it abruptly stopped and spaced a single word down below and then start back up below that single word causing a massive space from above. Someone might think that's minor but it made it difficult to stay engaged.

Rating: 4 stars

Twenty-five years ago Andrew Streeter was accused and found guilty of the murders of 5 teenagers with evidence confirming his guilt Fast forward as his convictions are overturned and there is evidence that the original investigation included dirty cops, planted evidence and bribery.

Detective Inspector Anjelica Henley was only 15 when these murders took place- with one of the victims being her childhood friend. She even was a witness during the case.

The cases are re-opened when murders start piling up again… and the team begins to dig into the past. Who is the real killer? Did their old boss get it wrong? Was he a dirty cop and his reputation truly ruined? Was a guilty conviction overturned wrongly?

This book was phenomenal. Nadine Matheson has a way of bringing you through the twists and turns of a thriller that many authors can’t. I always am surprised by the ending & the twists and am a huge fan.

Thank you to NetGalley and Hanover Square Press for the opportunity to read and review this arc. It is absolutely worth the read!

Fantastic! Even though it's only book 3, it's my favorite of the series so far. I loved the very ending that leads into book 4. In a mystery series, I love when you get to know the personal lives of the team in addition to their work ethics. In this book, we see both Anjelica and Salim holding it together at work while facing heartbreaking family issues. It was nicely balanced.

There is a lot involved in this one which of course turns out to be connected. Once you reach that 75-80% mark, you won't be able to put it down. The killings are gruesome and would probably fit right in if this were a horror novel (a genre I don't read) yet the writing is so wonderful that it doesn't seem so bad when you're reading it. The pacing is exactly right and moves the story along so that you can't wait to see what comes next.

Nadine Matheson is one of my favorite authors. I loged The Jigsaw Man & The Binding Room and this third installment was great as well. The begining was a little overly detailed and it took me awhile for myself to remember all the characters & their histories. I love how this author always gives us a gritty mystery, and adds in creepy vibes, and a smart plot.

📝 T H R I L L E R T H U R S D A Y 📝 featuring “The Kill List” by Nadine Matheson!

BOOK REVIEW: 🖤🖤🖤🖤/5

25 years ago Andrew Streeter was arrested for the shocking and brutal murders of 5 people. At the time, DCI Harry Rhimes arrested Streeter after finding his “Kill List” inside his home.

Now in present days, Streeter’s case is being re-examined when new evidence resurfaces that implies that DCI Rhimes was corrupt and Streeter is actually innocent after all these years …

Inspector Anjelica Henley is now on the case … although is it is a conflict of interest. Harry Rhimes was her old boss and she cannot fathom that he would ever be corrupt. However, as new murders start up again Anjelica must face the looming truth that perhaps Harry DID get it wrong about Streeter and that 25 years later the true murderer is still out on the streets working through their new “kill list”.

🚨 This is the third book in the Inspector Anjelica Henley series following THE JIGSAW MAN and THE BINDING MAN! I did not read Book 2 and I was totally fine going into Book 3 without it aka can totally be read as a stand-alone!

Thank you kindly to @queennads @hanoversquarepress @netgalley for my advanced digital copy in exchange for my honest review! This book releases on August 6, 2024!

The Kill list by Nadine Matheson was just mediocre for me. I liked it but reminded me of an episode like Law and Order or something. I didn’t trudge through it but it wasn’t overly exciting either. The blurb on the back proved that this book had a lot of potential, but the follow through wasn't there for me.

I loved this one! Great book with great pacing!! I loved the suspense and the set up in this one! As a fan of the first two books I was excited to read this one! It lived up to the hype!

DI Henley is back with a blast from the past. Twenty-five years ago, a murderer was locked away. He had a kill list he worked his way down. In light of new information the conviction is overturned the the SCU is handed the old case files to get to the bottom of. When a new kill list begins, the team must press through to not only fine the current killer but make sense of the rumors attached to the old cases about their old boss, Rhimes. Henley will have to push through personal problems to find a resolution before the killer gets to the end of their list.

I truly love the SCU. They are a fun cast of characters who are very real. The plot this time fell flat for me. It felt very obvious where it was headed. Would I read another book, yes absolutely. I still want more SCU. Thank you Netgalley for the advanced copy of this book.

The Kill List by Nadine Matheson is set against the backdrop of London’s gritty streets, this novel is a thrilling addition to the Detective Inspector Anjelica Henley series, which has captivated readers with its intricate plotting and compelling character development. I was thrilled to see the continuation of this wonderful series.

Matheson, with her background as a criminal attorney, brings a level of authenticity to the narrative that is rare and engrossing. The story unfolds with Detective Henley facing a new adversary, one that challenges her both intellectually and emotionally. The novel delves deep into the psyche of its characters, exploring themes of justice, morality, and the human capacity for darkness.

The prose is sharp and evocative, painting a vivid picture of the setting and the inner turmoil of the characters. Matheson’s writing style is fluid, making the complex plot accessible and engaging. The pacing is masterful, with each chapter ratcheting up the tension and driving the story forward at a relentless pace.

What sets The Kill List apart is Matheson’s ability to weave social commentary into the fabric of her storytelling. The novel confronts such issues as race, class, and the often-blurred lines between right and wrong. It’s a thought-provoking read that challenges the reader to consider their own beliefs and biases.

Detective Henley is a protagonist for the ages — flawed, determined, and deeply human. Her personal struggles are as compelling as the case she’s working on, making her a relatable character that readers can root for. The supporting cast is equally well-drawn, with each character adding depth and complexity to the narrative.

The Kill List is a truly standout thriller that provides edge-of-your-seat suspense while offering a profound look at the society we live in.

A must-read for fans of the genre and a testament to Matheson’s talent as a storyteller. This book is a reminder of why we read thrillers—to be entertained, yes, but also to be moved and challenged by the stories they tell.

5 stars from this enthusiastic reader!

This is part of a series of a group of police detectives. I was able to follow it without a problem, so think my students will be fine with that aspect of it. Primarily a police procedural, the wrong man has been jailed as a serial killer. His innocence starts another series of murders and the detective race to figure out who the killer as they also investigate corruption in their department. Style is a little dry but was interesting book

This is the third in a series of English police procedurals following the career of detective inspector Anjelica Henley and I was thrilled to catch up her and her team. The revelations in the book poses challenge the integrity of the recently deceased chief who put away a sick serial killer. What seemed cut and dried now needs to be re-examined by his team who loved and learned under him. Thoroughly readable and enjoyable we are taken down the dangerously suspect investigation while trying to find either a copycat or the real killer of the Hit List.. Loved it!

I have loved the rest of the books in this series and the kill list solidified that for me. I recommend this series to anyone who loves thrillers.

So this isn’t a standalone but I read it as such

I think I did myself a disservice in doing so because I didn’t know who the characters were or how they were connected.

That being said,I did enjoy the dual timelines and the overall plot (A serial 🔪 was convicted of murder 25 years ago, but did they convict the wrong man?) but ultimately I got a bit bored- probably because I didn’t know the characters and had no stake in the game.

The Kill List is the third installment in the Inspector Anjelica Henley series. The book follows Henley and her team as they reopen a set of serial crimes from twenty-five years ago. Andrew Streeter was originally found guilty in 1996 of the murders of five young people, despite maintaining his innocence. Now, Streeter’s convictions have been overturned, as new evidence implies the original investigation was corrupt. When it becomes apparent that the real killer is still out there, and hunting a new set of victims, Henley and her team race to figure out who is responsible. This can be read as a stand-alone novel, however I would recommend reading the previous two installments first for a better understanding of the characters and their backstories.

As with all of the books in this series, The Kill List is fast-paced and can get fairly graphic and dark at times. Personally, I like a twisty read so I enjoy that aspect of this series. This installment felt a bit long and didn’t really give any clues as to who the real killer was until far into the story. Instead, the beginning focused more on whether or not DCI Rhimes, the team’s mentor who recently died, was part of the corrupt investigation. There was also a lot of character development around Henley and Ramouter’s personal lives which was interesting but not completely necessary to the plot. I would have liked to have read more about the investigation into the real killer and I think Matheson could have cut out a good 50 pages in this one.

That being said, Matheson is a pro at weaving an interesting and unique plot. DI Henley is a bad ass, and this book set the stage for the next installment, which I eagerly await.

A special thank you to Harlequin Trade Publishing, Hanover Square Press, and NetGalley for an ARC of this book, in exchange for my honest review.

I absolutely love this series and love everything about DCI Anjelika Henry! This one did not disappoint. An interesting case plus page turning developments in the lives of our recurring characters…it’s just a big yes for me. I cannot wait to see where this series goes. Perfect for fans of Lars Kepler.

4.25/5 stars! I love a good crime novel and this book definitely delivered. I love the idea of reopening cold cases and Henley was a strong character. I enjoyed the story, even if the pacing did drag a bit at times. I will be looking for the next book in this series soon.

I received an advance review copy for free through NetGalley, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
