I love the subversive quality of this type of horror. Showcasing Black characters while exploring themes of race and marginalization. A series of short stories, this is a fantastic audiobook full of suspense..

This was an excellent audio book! I really enjoyed all of the stories, and the narration. A great listen for all horror and YA fans.

Thank you to the publisher, author and Net Galley for an advanced copy of this audiobook.

I thoroughly enjoyed this collection. I felt like this was a really solid collection and I really enjoyed each take on a “final girl”. I really enjoyed Ghost Light, The Brides of Devil’s Bayou and The Skittering Thing. The narration was great too. I will give this another listen for sure.

These short stories are preceded by the words of Justina Ireland, author of Ophie's Ghosts. Justina lends historical context to the genre of horror and the racial divide in books and movies. She sets the tone for a new era of strong African American females who are main characters and survivors, not just the token friend.

These stories were scary, well-written, and fast-paced. Readers will want to read this book in print and listen on audiobook because the narrators did a great job as well.

I think this will be a must-read for all YA fans.

Thank you so much to NetGalley for this Arc! Amazing book, just when I thought the black girl wouldn't survive I had to remember what the title the book was! Kept me on my toes for every story!

I love everything about this. Short story collections are often hit and miss. Even the weakest link in this collection is unbreakable. I can’t wait to recommend it to students.

I want to give the book 5 stars just for the title alone! I love the premise and the focus of the story and why it came to be! Black girls are survivors, indeed. However, the stories weren’t attention grabbers; I didn’t get the horror that I came for. The narration was ok, and so were the stories.

Probably my favorite anthology of this year .
All the stories were incredible and I’m so glad it introduced me to so many new authors.

This is an excellent anthology of horror stories. I thoroughly enjoyed each one. I was a bit disappointed because I was so enthralled in the first story and didn’t realize it was an anthology so when the vibe changed drastically to the next story I was bewildered. I would say there were a handful of stories I enjoyed much more than others but they were all entertaining. I love reading things that go out of their way to show points of view that are underrepresented. It seems somewhat silly to point that out because the enjoyable part of the book isn’t just that it’s told from a black girls pov, but it’s genuinely lovely to read something unique. I go out of my way to not just read stories about white men, mostly because they just bore me at this point.
Despite the overarching detail of each story being “the black girl survives” the stories are told from several unique voices. Nothing feels repetitive or overdone.
I listened to parts of this audiobook with my 11 year old niece and I don’t think there was much I would be uncomfortable with her hearing. At the same time there were multiple points where I got chills and was surprised with where the stories went.
Good stuff. Do recommend. Not the most terrifying book but a very enjoyable read.

The Black Girl Survives in This one is another great horror anthology. I very much enjoyed the majority of these stories and thought only a few weren’t for me. I appreciate that they took the typical trope that you’d find in a horror anthology and put their own spins on them.

A more young-adult focused bit of horror, and definitely a type that will make the book banners cry. Powerful women, critical race theory, and plenty of blood and just a hint of sex. But never too much of a focus on the gore to be ridiculous.

I do wish there had been more narrators than one (and Due’s introduction). I find that having alternating narrators helps to separate the stories better in my head. But the narrator did a fine job.

Favorites include:

Harvesters: A strong beginning! Follows a pretty traditional YA horror structure, including that all-important twist ending!

Queeniums for Greenium!: Evil multi-level marketing scheme is more evil than just being an MLM! Great for anyone who has experienced the horror of “hey girlie!”

Foxhunt: And a strong ending! Love to see two-faced high-schoolers getting their comeuppance!

Advanced reader copy provided by the publisher.

This is such a solid YA horror anthology! As with most short story collections, there are some hits and misses but overall, there were very few that didn't hit for me, and none that were under 3 stars. I liked the way most of these stories played with classic tropes and I love the idea of a whole series of stories where the Black girls do in fact survive.

I particularly enjoyed the MLM cult take in Brittney Morris's Queeniums for Greenium! and the generational trauma take of Charlotte Nicole Davis's Foxhunt. Maika Moulite and Maritza Moulite's Black Girl Nature Group also had an interesting take on racism in the outdoors. I also really liked Black Pride by Justina Ireland and Cemetery Dance Party by Saraciea J. Fennell.

Anthologies are hit or miss for me and I'm so happy to say this was a hit! While I enjoyed some stories more than others, there isn't a single "bad" story in this. There's obviously a Black MC in each story and throughout the anthology we see queer rep, autistic rep, fat rep, and disabled rep.

I am not a horror fan, but I'm trying to branch out. I love the work of some of the authors in this anthology, so it seemed like a good entry into a genre I don't normally explore. Also, the title's premise definitely helped me feel better going in. Dude, so good. This was a whole "only listen during the day" type of book. From the first story, just super creepy vibes done incredibly well. I can happily recommend this to horror lovers as well as those like myself who are trying to broaden their horizons a bit. Not a single weak link in the entire anthology.

I am a huge fan of the horror genre for books as well as movie media. It is so refreshing to see Black authors fill a gapping hole that was created by Hollywood in the 60s and has continued to persist even now.

The Black girl survives is my first anthology and I was very pleasantly surprised by how much I liked the format of 1 chapter per story, it felt very quick and easy to read while still flowing well.

I would recommend this to anyone who is already a horror fan and anyone who is interested in reading within the genre, these stories are not scary just more shocking and “gasp worthy” so still safe for younger teens as well.

The Black Girl Survives in This One is a great YA horror anthology. I find it hard to give a rating to anthologies due to the nature of their formatting, but this work is definitely one that I would recommend. There were a few hits but all in all, I enjoyed all of them. I loved the foreword as well.
If you or someone you know is in the market for a diverse YA read and/or want to shop around for new authors you haven't read from before, this is a promising one.

Every chapter/story was completely different from each other which I enjoyed. The authors did a great job in capturing the identity and personality of the main character which was always a brave, black girl, in it. There were chapters that I wished were longer because the storyline was so good. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this anthology.

I loved this anthology! It was full of strong young Black women surviving some really twisted circumstances. Usually when reviewing anthologies, I include my favorite stories, but I thought all of the ones in this book were great! I'll definitely be recommending this to teens at my library.

The concept behind this book was piqued my interest: authors of colour writing about girls and women of colour who all survive and are "the final girl". As other reviewers have mentioned, the fact that the reader knows the main character in each story will survive takes some of the suspense away, but that is made up for by following along with how they survive.

Most of the stories were a little too supernatural for my liking but, putting that aside, the standout stories to me were "Harvesters", "Welcome to the Cosmos" and, to a lesser extent, "The Black Strings". The story that has stayed with me the longest was "TMI", although I was left wanting more in general and wanting more answers specifically.

In my opinion, none of the stories were strong enough to use in our high school curriculum, but it will definitely be on our purchase list for our library. The narrator did a great job :-)
