This was a good story, that I really enjoyed. At first I wasn't sure how much I'd like it, since I wasn't all that interested in it from the beginning, but the story slowly grew on me and by the end I liked it a lot!
Laney's backstory was a little sad, because she was a child of adoption and because of that along with other circumstances battled a feeling of rejection. At the same time I was glad that she was placed in what sounded like a wonderfully loving and caring family.
Kai has issues of his own, that we learn more about as the story progresses, and he felt very realistic. I loved his love of Hawaii and the people he considers family.
All in all, this was a nice addition to the Quilts of Love series and I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys contemporary Christian fiction.
I received a complimentary copy of this book to review. I was asked to give my honest opinion of the book - which I have done.
Aloha Rose. This is a story of adoption, and it was beautiful. Aloha Rose takes place in Hawaii, where our main character, Laney, finds who she is and who her birth mother was. Steeped in the cultural beauty of Hawaii, Laney's story unfolds. The imagery of a grandmother's dance and the quilt holds the answers as well as love she so yearns for.
These are the elements I was very excited to read about in the Quilts of Love series.
As for the story, I felt it moved a bit too fast. the Characters and the relationships needed more depth. The love story in it felt rushed and just shallow. Though the comical moments made me laugh, I felt that a love relationship should be more than a "moment" have garner more of a grounded true love. I felt that overall the characters were likable and feel like people that I would love to get to know more.
I was drawn to this book right away because of its setting. Hawaii! Yes, please! The descriptions didn't disappoint and it was a lovely little literary vacation just as things were really cooling off in real life. Thanks to my mom and my mother-in-law both being avid quilters, I must say I have an affinity for a story built around lovely quilt as well. Hawaiian quilting has always intrigued me and I loved the bits of tradition and history woven into this sweet love story.
Sometimes I love Christian romance novels and other times they seem cheesy or superficial to me. This story didn't disappoint, in that while the spiritual aspect was overt, it was raw and real and we really got to see the characters grow into a more complete understanding of the gospel alongside their love story.
Aloha Rose is a well-written, entertaining read and would make a great beach companion as well as a virtual winter escape. For more information about the storyline and the series, visit the Quilts of Love website.
