Thanks NetGalley and Viz Media for this arc!
5/5 stars
This was a fun little read! I think this would be perfect for young readers and for older fans of the game who want something low stakes with lots of fun. The art was spot on with how the game is animated; I haven't played Splatoon since my Wii U a loooong time ago but I still recognized some areas from the game!
My son (11) was very excited to read this ARC. He loved all the previous Splatoon graphic novels and read through this one in record time! THe only issue is now he has to wait for the next volume to be released! Shortly after finishing it he went back to reread all his previous issues (also my 12 year read it too and said it was super interesting - that's about what you get from a middle schooler these days!)
Thank you NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I love seeing more starter manga for the younger readers. Especially for parents who don’t want anything overly “gory”. This is a perfect starter into the genre of Manga, that’s not pokemon.
My kids love these books and I was excited to see a new series of them. We read this together and if you like video games, play splatoon, or enjoy light and fun manga: this is for you!
It's a great way to encourage reading while your kids also feel like they are immersed in their favorite video game world.
I have seen other reviews say it just feels like an ad for the game and I would say it's more of an extension of the game. Feel like you are in their world for a little bit in a different way!
This is a review from my 11 year old son:
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐The book was really funny and I liked the new character. It was a lot like the original. It was really cool to see the characters from splatoon 2 using the new weapons and gear. I also like the new version of the S4 back from splatoon 2. They really gave off the evil vibe.
If you’re hoping for a Splatoon story, this isn’t it. I hoped this might be a fun little story, but it’s really just a long, though cute, ad for the game Splatoon 3. And I’m a fan of Splatoon. But all this really does is highlight the new weapons, hair styles, and specials that came out with the third game. To call this a story is paper thin at best.
The art is cute, story basically non existent, nd there’s no character development.
