I really enjoyed Hex and the City and was excited to read this book.
This is a quick and easy read - there’s regency drama and witches with great main and side characters.

Like the previous book I read this one was an easy read.

I had previously read and enjoyed Kate Johnson's other paranormal romance books, so I was excited to see she had a new book. I was especially looking forward to this one because I have recently gotten into historical romance. This was as good as her other books with a great setting for the story, taking place in Britain during the regency period. The characters were likable and the plot engaging. My only complaint was that the main characters were slow to get together and kept fighting, which got tiring. But, I will say I am just not a fan of that trope and still really enjoyed the book. Will be recommending to friends and patrons. (Thank you to Netgalley and One More Chapter for the ARC)

Tiffany hates that she only matters in the context of her proximity to men: her father's daughter, her brother's sister, and some day her husband's wife. She wants to be her own person and exist on her own terms and if she has her way, she'll never marry--a possibility that grows once she meets her great aunt Esme, who is unmarried and lives with a group of women. Women who are witches. Suddenly Tiffany can't keep pretending that she's imagining making pictures come to life; she's a witch, as well. And after saving a handsome pirate, Santiago, with her witching, she begins to wonder if maybe marrying him wouldn't be so bad--he's outside of society, and therefore she might be allowed to be her own person in the marriage. While she's torn between her feelings for him and her desire for independence, something keeps terrorizing the waters around them. With Santiago's help, Tiffany and the witches do what they can to keep the "beasty with the squirmers" away.

Hex and Hexability is absolutely delightful. It's the perfect blend of historical and fantasy, and the romance is very swoony. I utterly adored it.

"Bridgerton meets The Ex Hex this witchy season with this oh so spicy romantasy Regency romcom!

'Do you want to see what witches can do?'

Lady Tiffany Worthington has always had a special talent for making the world around her come to life - whether she wants it to or not - but it's only with the arrival of her mysterious great aunt Esme on the eve of the Battle of Waterloo that she learns she's a witch...and that the magic she's long feared is actually a gift to be embraced.

Now, as she's exposed to a side of London she never knew existed, one with sea creatures, magical portals, time travel, and a handsome duke from a faraway land with a dashing scar that makes him look like a pirate, Lady Tiffany discovers that despite what the ton might decree, there is no limit to what she can do...or who she can be."

REGENCY MAGIC! MUPPET ARM FLAIL!

Hex and Hexability is a regency romance which follows newfound witch Lady Tiffany Worthington as she becomes entangled with a mysterious pirate who is also a duke.

This was a fun little witchy romance! There was a lot I didn't expect -- like killer squids and time travel -- but overall I thoroughly enjoyed this lighthearted romp. it was cozy and charming, perfect for a weekend read going into spooky season. While I do think that some of the conflict felt a little ridiculous -- these characters LOVED to make the most asinine assumptions about each other!! -- I found the book overall to be incredibly engaging and entertaining. Definitely a must-read for folks looking for something a bit more whimsical to scratch that regency romance itch!

3.5 ⭐️

This historical romance brings whimsy to an otherwise incredibly depressing time for anyone but wealthy white men. Set around 1814-1816, it highlights how depressingly little women had in society, how someone with “golden” skin is an oddity worth gossiping about, and how much the English looked down on the French for having more “liberal” views on human rights. The Bridgerton time period was wretchedly awful. This story seems authentic to the time with our MCs being exceptions to society’s rules providing us a generally entertaining story to follow. I liked Santiago the most in the story. He’s the most interesting, the most well rounded human, and has a solid right/wrong compass even with him being a pirate/smuggler/vagabond. Lady Tiffany is so sheltered and purposefully kept ignorant of all things outside of society by her guardians that she’s basically a 13 year old in woman’s body - her character development was fun. Overall, a good read. Pacing is a bit on the slower side, as I feel most historical reads are. There are some long chapters as well.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for my copy of this

This book was really well written and the plot and characters were excellently developed yet unfortunately it just wasn’t for me. I can definitely see how people love this book and I would recommend it if you’re looking for a little historical magical realism

This fast and fun read kept me entertained from beginning to end! Kate Johnson does a wonderful job of bringing a story to life! The characters are amazing, and I loved seeing Tiffany realize she is more than her ability to be a wife and mother and find a place where she can not only fit in but thrive. The magic was amazing, I loved the characters, and the plot was super cute, along with a swoon-worthy romance! At least once they realize the actually like each other. I can't wait to see what Kate Johnson is going to come out with next.

A Regency rebel, Tiffany wants nothing to do with any of the norms she is expected to comply with. When her aunt Esme turns up and she learns she is a witch, so many things make much more sense. Then the dashing Duke, Santiago, drops into her life. Will she compromise her ideals for the handsome Duke with the piratical leanings?

If you love historical fiction like Bridgerton, etc, this is for you! I'm not a huge historical romance fan but there was enough paranormal goings on to keep me interested. The world building isn't super strong but it's cohesive and there aren't any bits that made me think I had missed something.

Our MC's are likeable and relatable and the easy way Santiago accepts the truth of Tiffany's talents was really nice. They have flaws and vulnerabilities like real folks and that makes them much more appealing. The banter between them was sparkling and there was plenty of humour.

Billy, De Groot and Esme were all wonderful secondary characters.

Dnf. This is all my bad cause I was thinking this was going to be a cute, simple read which is what I’m in the mood for.

This was just so fun. A pirate and a proper lady? I read this quickly, not because it was fast paced but because I liked seeing this feminist version of a Regency lady find her way. And with witches!

Was this the next great British novel? No. But it was really fun. Adventure and fantasy and romance. The main character, Tiffany, was mostly real. She’s obviously young and unnaturally beautiful, but she’s a witch. She’s a bit of a Cinderella and her talents are mysteriously useful. It’s not annoying though. I was rooting for her. She discovers herself in this adventure, solves a mystery and learns that it’s never all or nothing. You can be more than one thing.

Was this accurate historical fiction? No, so laughably far from it. If that’s what you’re looking for, look elsewhere. This is the spooky version of a beach read. And sometimes, we all just need a little fluff.

Bridgerton season one with a sprinkle of My Lady Jane

If the ”historical” in “historical fantasy romance” isn’t generally your jam, rest assured that the frequent jumping between two characters’ perspectives will keep you from getting bored.

“Hex and Hexability” is definitely not your typical witchy romance; it's action-packed and set in a (more) oppressive and prejudiced world. Not a cozy fall read, but a fall read nonetheless.

If you're a fan of Jane Austen, and enjoy books with a sprinkling of magic realism, you will love Kate Johnsons latest!

It has everything you'd expect from a romance novel, with a few magical twists and turns and just the right amount of spice. It's a lovely little palate cleanser for fans of high fantasy, who still want the magic, but with lower stakes and less complex world settings. This is not to say it's a boring book, the opposite in fact, with beautifully descriptive world building, cozy atmosphere and a simple magic system akin to Halloweentowns 'Want Something And Let Yourself Have It!'.

The characters all compliment each other well, our main characters Tiffany & Santiago giving us the perfect slow burn romance. I particularly liked the character diversity, with race, trans & sexuality all represented in a delicate and subtle manner.

I've really enjoyed this book and will definitely be adding the rest of Kates books to my never ending TBR!

I love Sense and Sensibility, but I didn't love what the author did to Elinor's character here. I feel like overall I enjoyed it once I got past that, but it felt very long and drawn out. Especially the conflict at the end really annoyed me since we already had a discussion about it. Final thoughts was this book was okay and fun at times.

I don't think this book was for me - I like the concept of regency witchy romance, but I just couldn't get into it. It could just be the mental space my brain is in at the moment, but I wasn't being drawn in.

3 stars because I HAVE to give a star rating and I don't want to impact the average; the writing was good, and the story was great, I just was not here for it at the moment!

DNFed at 20%. I may come back to this in the future!!

Kate Johnson’s Hex and Hexability is a cute Regency/Bridgerton romance with a magic intertwined. The story follows Tiffany, a witch disinterested in marriage, and her dynamic with Santiago, a rugged pirate sort Duke.

While Tiffany’s circle of witches adds intrigue, their roles could use more depth. The romance between Tiffany and Santiago is enjoyable, marked by playful banter and genuine respect, though the slow build-up tested my patience. Additionally, the plot twist near the end felt out of place.

All that said, I liked it especially for this time of year, and will read more by Johnson!

I was delighted to be granted the chance to read Hex and Hexibility. Kate Johnsons earlier novels have been truly excellent, and this one meets the mark.

A magical twist on era of the moment, Regency written with style and flair. Overall this novel is fantastically well written, captivating throughout. The characters are well developed and engaging. Kate's heroines are all brilliant.

A very fun, enchanting read!
