I can see that I'm intensely in the minority here but this book didn't do it for me unfortunately :( I'm really in a regency kick at the moment, and anything witchy/cozy is entirely up my alley, but this story never really clicked for me. I didn't care much for either of the main characters, either as individuals or as a couple, their miscommunications irked me, the pacing felt off, for a lot of the book it felt like not much was happening. Disappointing but we move!

Bridgerton meets Ex Hex is a lovely description of this book. I really enjoyed this historical fantasy. Witches are one of my favorite tropes/genres.
This one satisfied my need for something witchy. I was excited to see that the author has other witchy books and I can't wait to read them all.

This book had a little bit of everything - historical fiction, magic, sea creatures, time travelling, and more! I loved the chaotic, adventurous spirit of the book and the characters were fun, with a lot of depth. I LOVED Tiffany and Santiago, especially their banter and I want more of them!

This book was a mix of Bridgerton, witches, and pirates, which is everything I needed and didn’t even know it. It was clever and wonderful and charming. The characters were all fantastic and lovely and funny. I adored it!

If you are looking for bridgerton meets witchcraft, this book is for you. I couldn’t put this down no matter how many times I tried. I loved everything about this book. The main characters were so much fun and the side characters really added to it. There is a mix of adventure that was quite enjoyable to read. I can’t wait to read the Hex Appeal!

I received an arc from netgalley and the publisher.

This is Kate Johnson's first foray into writing historical fiction, after writing two books combining witches and romance in the 21st century. In 'Hex and Hexability', Johnson sets her novel amongst the ton of 1815 England. Left with her brother and sister in law by her parents, Lady Theophania (Tiffany) has grown up fearing what she believes to be her inevitable future - to become married and become the possession of another, losing all her independence. She has also grown up trying not to notice that magical things occur in her presence, including paintings seeming to come to life. That is until through Aunt Esme, Tiffany is introduced to other women of her kind, and thanks to a disastrous ball, she gets to meet the piratical Santiago.

Johnson's novels are a great read and a huge amount of fun. Her characters are both different (I've never met a witch) and relatable as well as having depth. She also manages to maintain the right level of conflict for the characters to overcome, alongside successful and satisfying conclusions. I've previously read 'Hex Appeal' and was very pleased to have the opportunity to review this novel for Netgalley UK. I will be looking out for future books by the author.

A charming story about a woman embracing her magic and a man learning he can be more than he thought he was.

4.25/5
Cute, chaotic, funny story. Kate Johnson has done it again for a fun time romance read! Bridgerton vibes are for real in this book with witches and more drama. Regency formality with touches and stares and tension! I would say it's a slow burn for a stand alone romance with a bunch of miscommunication. The characters are funny, diverse, quarky and have tons of personality. The magic is kind of those who have it only have a super specialized style. And the setting is built very well. The only thing that lowers the score is how chaotic and out of the blue her plots get sometimes. Nevertheless it is a fun read!
Thank you NetGalley and One More Chapter for the opportunity to read this e-arc! I had a blast and this is my honest opinion.

Absolutely enchanting and impossible to put down even at the end! I want more Tiffany and Santiago! More!

This book was everything and so much more!

I loved the chemistry and banter between Tiffany and Santiago. They complimented eachother so well and made the story more fun. I wasn’t sure how much I was going to love this book since historical romances isn’t usually my thing but it was perfect. The fantasy mixed with the bridgerton-esk style was exactly what I needed!

Dare I say it’s the best book I’ve read so far this year? 🤭

Right book, wrong time. I love the witchiness of Kate Johnson’s other titles but struggled a bit with how authentic this one was. I find myself checking out when the words are difficult to read or understand. That being said, I loved the MCs. I loved their banter and their attempts to not love each other. I do feel like I was kept a bit at the surface of who they were and only got glimpses into their true selves which had me feeling a bit robbed but loved the idea of the whole book.

I thought this was a good book. I liked the originality of the book as well as the inclusion of magic. It was fun to read a book that was part historical fiction and part cozy witch read. Add in a touch of romance and this book becomes a winner. I really enjoyed the author’s writing style and would definitely read more from her in the future. I would definitely recommend this book.

This is a total popcorn read: entertaining, lighthearted, funny and very digestible. The characters are great, from our FMC - an unwilling woman in society who has no idea she's a witch - to the dashing MMC - a pirate who's entering society for the first time after a change in fortune. The supporting cast are loveable and add layers to the story. There's a mystery to be solved, and they fall in love along the way. What more could you want from a romcom?

This is by far my favourite of the author's books to date and I very much hope we see more set in this world and time period!

Title: Hex and Hexability

Author: Kate Johnson

Rating: ★★★★

Ever wondered what happens when Bridgerton meets The Ex Hex? This is what happens! buckle up for a wild, witchy ride with Hex and Hexability by Kate Johnson. This Regency romcom is sprinkled with magic, romance, and enough spice to keep you hooked from start to finish.

Lady Tiffany Worthington has always had a knack for making things happen—whether it’s the right colour of gown or the wrong type of chaos. But when her enigmatic great aunt Esme arrives just before the Battle of Waterloo, Tiffany discovers that her talent is more than just luck; she’s a witch! It turns out that her long-feared magic is actually a dazzling gift waiting to be embraced.

As Tiffany is thrust into a hidden world of sea creatures, magical portals, and time travel, she encounters a dashing duke with a scar that makes him look like a swashbuckling pirate. With every turn, Tiffany learns that the constraints of high society are no match for the limitless possibilities of her newfound powers—or her burgeoning feelings for the enigmatic duke.

This book is a delightful blend of Regency charm and fantastical fun. Kate Johnson weaves together a narrative that’s as enchanting as it is humorous, with a romance that’s both sweet and sizzling. Tiffany's journey of self-discovery and magical mishaps is irresistibly entertaining, and the chemistry between her and the duke is electric.

For anyone looking for a charming escape filled with romance, wit, and a touch of witchy wonder, Hex and Hexability is your perfect spellbinding, halloween read. Grab your favourite cozy spot and let this delightful tale whisk you away to a world where love and magic go hand in hand. Highly recommend for a magical dose of Regency romance with a modern twist!

An amusing historical novel, blending fantasy and romance, “Hex and Hexability”, by Kate Johnson, features likeable and relatable characters that feel real despite the witchery.
I loved how Santiago and Tiffany are comfortable with each other since the beginning, their light disagreements and banter, and the basic honesty that marks the relationship.
The easy acceptance by Santiago of Tiffany’s abilities/peculiarities and the admiration, respect and even awe he manifests is compelling, too.
Even people not that much interested in fantasy will like the natural way witchery happens, with lots of humor and a bit of mischief.
These characters have vulnerabilities and fears, overcame their circumstances, and are stronger and more human because of that.
I appreciated the caring and sweetness between the leads, mixed with desire, yearning and sensuality.
There are great secondary characters, too, and I was particularly fond of Billy.

Thank you Kate Johnson, HarperCollins UK and Netgalley for this free ARC in exchange for a review.

I was put off by the rape joke told by Billy, which Santiago laughed at. At lease he doesn’t traffic people though. That would have made me stop reading. This made me a bit wary of reading the rest, but I did.

This book was fairly entertaining, though aside from bonding for a minute over their similar backgrounds, the romance seemed forced. Their miscommunications were annoying. I also don’t like it when romance becomes the main storyline in a book which isn’t advertised in the romance genre.

It was annoying that when they’re captured in the tower, she’s preoccupied with something he said. As if that’s more important than being prisoners.

More details about the other characters and how magic works in this world would have made this novel a bit better.

I loved the premise of this story, Pride and Prejudice/Bridgerton vibes with witches? I'm in.

However, I struggled a bit with the first 30-40% of the book as it was a bit confusing and we're introduced to characters and their situations without being given much depth to them.

But I began to enjoy the book at the 50% mark and liked the growth of Tiffany and Santiago's relationship, while superficial, it was a fun read. I really enjoyed seeing them navigate their feelings for each other while also navigating regency society together. There is quite a bit of miscommunication between then, so if you like that trope, this is for you. This is a quick read and overall my favourite aspect was the characters in regency society and how our fmc deals with being a witch and being expected to marry as it is what society expects of her. While there isn't much depth to the story and characters, if you'd like a quick and fun read, this is for you.

Thank you Netgalley for this arc in exchange for my honest review.

I don’t typically read historical novels, but I made an exception for “Hex and Hexability” by Kate Johnson and was not disappointed! Lady Tiffany has been spending her first season in society trying to avoid any men taking a fancy to her. At one ball, she accidentally makes the chalk drawings on the ballroom floor come to life and runs into a mysterious newcomer called Santiago while trying to avoid detection.

“Hex and Hexability” contains magic and monsters, but also romance and mystery. Tiffany and Santiago are both attempting to navigate Society while also dealing with their pasts. I enjoyed the banter between the protagonists. Tiffany’s great aunt and her witchy companions were also highly entertaining. The book lost a star for the left turn near the end of the book that caught me off-guard and took me out of the flow of the story. Overall, this was an enjoyable, quick read and I will be looking to read other novels that Kate Johnson has published.

Thank you to NetGalley and HarperCollins for the ARC. My review is honest and voluntary.
