I would like to thank the publishers Inkubator Books and the wonderful author Theo Baxter.
Having never read anything from Theo or his brother Cole, I found this thriller to be quite insightful to the minds of psychological thriller authors. The way the character Detective Marcy Kendrick just jumps in with case as it makes her go back in time. I never saw it coming with who it was in the end. But definitely will be reading more from Theo Baxter in the future.
Skin Deep is the 1st book in Theo Baxter's exciting, fast paced Detective Marcy Kendrick series. This was one of those books that just pulls you in and doesn’t let go. I didn't want to put the it down until the grand finale.
LAPD Homicide Detective Marcy Kendrick won't hesitate to shoot the bad guys. Unfortunately, she's recently gained notoriety for having killed three serial killers. Now she's being stalked by a killer who's convinced that they're the same. Marcy is willing to play along in hopes that she'll stop the murderer before there's yet another victim.
Another brilliant book by Theo Baxter. I’d been struggling to get into a book for a while and am pleased to say skin deep didn’t disappoint. Even better that it is part of a series and as soon as I’d put down book 1 I’d picked up book 2.
Detective Marcy Kendrick is on of the best detectives her team has, so she is given the tough job of hunting down a serial killer, however for Marcy there is more to this case than first meets the eye. This serial killer is a suspected copycat killer who mimicked the work of a serial killer who killed Marcy’s mum when she was just 10 years old.
I’m so pleased I’ve found another good detective series to get stuck into. As I was reading skin deep I think I suspected just about every person in the book apart from who the actual killer was. I don’t think I’d have got that in a million years.
A fantastic fast paced and twisty thriller if ever there was one.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for an advance copy of this book in exchange for this review.
Theo was a a master story teller. I absolutely love this series and can’t wait to get started on book two.
Marcy Kendrick is a tough as nails detective who will stop at nothing to solve her case.
Her relationship with her brother is strong with a few holes in it that she may not understand.
Absolutely love this series! A must read.
This was a great book! All the way through I kept trying to guess who the killer was… I didn’t guess and was shocked at the end. The characters were easy to love or hate. The storyline was well thought out and I really enjoyed the adventure with Marcy although there were times that my heart broke for her. Highly recommended
I’m not sure how I feel about this book, it gets intense & I felt uncomfortable at times.. At parts, particularly in the beginning it’s grotesque and hard to read. I also feel disappointed in the portrayal of Jordan the ex-husband. Yeah, it’s hard for divorced couple to work together, but I don’t think of anyplace that would allow married couples to work in the same department let alone one being in a position of authority. I think the way Jordan treats her is a stereotype of divorced couples. I kind of also feel the ending of the killer is disappointing, it feels like a cop-out, that he ends up not having to take responsibility, & that someone knew he may have a problem & did nothing. #SkinDeep #NetGalley
Detective Marcy Kendrick has been assigned a new case, and tasked to find out who is murdering and staging scenes, that are reminiscent of the killer that murdered her mother when she was young. Not only is she dealing with the feelings this would bring up, but she is also dealing with her ex-husband, who obviously has an issue with Marcy, and is her supervisor at work! He gives her a bad time about everything, but especially about being "Gun Happy" several times, though she has been cleared by the department.
Along with that, she is also working solo as her partner "Angel" is in the hospital recovering from an accident!
If you like a great read, that will hold your attention Grab your copy, get comfortable and enjoy
I want to thank the author for a great book, the publisher and NetGalley for letting me get an advanced reader copy!
This review is my own opinion and I'm happy to be able to write it, with the hope that it will encourage someone to read the first book in this series!
Skin deep is the first in a police procedural/thriller and the MC Marcy has a partner who is badly injured in a car crash and then soon after catches a serial killer case and has to work it alone. All while dealing with a volatile ex who is now her direct supervisor because he risked so nanny internal complaints she was passed over for promotion but he is the one selected. It’s not a bad read although I struggled with background issues such as an open hostile ex-husband who openly and aggressively demeaned his ex-wife (the MC) in the workplace as her boss. Her insanely high rate of officer involved shootings resulting in deaths on the job (in a very short time frame) and a few other things I will gloss over as not to ruin the entire plot for anyone.
I can say I did not guess who the killer was. However, the details surrounding the how’s and why’s are a bit to take in. I found the ending a bit unsatisfying it felt rushed and disjointed.
There is a second book and a preview is at the end which may interest those who want to continue the series. Overall it’s a quick read and the MC Marcy is likable.
This book had me trying to work to who the murderer once and when I thought I had figured it to, a huge plot twist came and left me speechless. Highly recommend any books by this author.
First book in the series. The main character, Marcy, is a hard as nails detective with messy and complicated personal and professional relationships and mixes in well with a plot that is fast paced and full of suspense with a couple of twists and turns to keep the reader guessing and turning the page. I am looking forward to the next book in the series. I voluntarily reviewed an advance readers copy of this book.
Police procedural featuring Mercy Kendrick. Her partner was badly injured in a car crash so she must struggle alone to find the murderer, all while facing the animosity of her ex husband. A good read.
Thank you to Netgalley and Inkubator Books for this ARC of ‘Skin Deep’ by Theo Baxter.
This was such an amazing start to a series. I was hooked from beginning to end. I read this in one sitting and thought the twists were so well thought out. Definitely a must read!
A Brilliant new series
Book one in Detective Marcy Kendrick series which is looking like another cracking read and series by Theo Baxter!.
I enjoyed this creepy detective thriller.
I loved getting to know the man character she was a bad ass! The crime was shocking and a little creepy did not see the murderer coming! Loved the twist.
I feel this is a good start to detective series and I can’t wait to read more
Why does a writer want to confuse the readers by changing 1.person POV? I see no good reason, and I hate it! In addition, this book has a few "bad" characters that are over the top like bad movie characters, and the dialogue is sometimes stilted and unnatural.
A readable book, but not very entertaining.
Skin Deep is the first book in a new series by Theo Baxter. Marcy Kendrick is a detective at the LAPD and she has caught a case involving a man who kills the same way in which her mother was killed. Marcy believes her mother's killer is still alive, but not many others do. He was shot before falling from a bridge and never resurfaced.
This book flows nicely and has excellent character development. We are introduced to Marcy's ex husband, who is also her superior at work (ugh imagine that?), her brother, and her partner. This was one of those books that was very difficult to put down because I needed to see what happened. It is told from multiple POVs and it works great. I cannot wait to read the second book in the series, which I will do as soon as I finish reading the book I'm in the midst of.
Thank you to Inkubator books and Netgalley for the ARC. I greatly appreciate the book and highly recommend it.
New to me author, very good book. I was surprised to find out who the killer was. Totally not who I suspected it would be. I'm ready for Angel and Marcy to get out of their own way and I look forward to more books in the series. I love a good mystery/thriller and this hit the mark.
I love Marcy Kendrick! There is nothing like a BOSS woman detective. This was a procedural thriller that I really enjoyed. I read this book in one sitting.
There is a serial killer on the loose. Is it a copycat, or is an old serial killer back?. Marcy is asking the same question because her mom was killed in the same manner of these new victims. On top of that, the serial killer seems to be obsessed with Marcy. This is a thrilling first installment in a new detective series. Baxter has written a well developed plot that is told from multiple POVs. The character development is on point as we get to know Marcy, her partner Angel, her ex-husband Jordan, her brother Stephen, and the mind of the killer.
I loved this book, and I am so eager to read the second book in the series. Thank you to NetGalley and Inkubator Books for this ARC. All thoughts are my own.
This review is my opinion and my opinion only. I wish I could give this book a 4.5 stars. Theo Baxter is a new to me author, and I’m so happy that I gave him a chance. This book is well written. It flowed nicely, and I didn’t want to put it down. I pulled me in and didn’t let go. Skin Deep by Theo Baxter is about Detective Marcy Kendrick why works at LAPD Homicide.
She caught a case that is really close to how her mother was murdered. There are many parallels that make Marcy question is this the same murderer as her mother or a copycat.
The person who killed her mother jumped into the river and was never found. So is he alive or does the murderer have a fan?
I’m not saying much more because you NEED to read this. I can’t wait to start book 2. Theo Baxter has become a must read author for me!
A good start to a new series featuring Detective Marcy Kendrick. It's a quick and easy read, set in LA, with interesting plotting and some good characterisation. There is plenty of suspense and a few twists to occupy the reader. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.
