Discomfort is necessary for growth and that's why inclusive leadership is hard. Excellent read that provides tangible frameworks to embark on the work of creating inclusive leadership.
Such an interesting take on matters diversity, equality and inclusion and I particularly found the questions for discomfort section the best of each chapter because it truly had me facing my biases and perception.
Thanks Netgalley for the eARC.
Overall liked where this was going and felt it relevant to the role I am in - Senior leader advisor to a younger company's DEI program. However, it was a slog to get through. You know when it starts off with a graph its going to be a heavy hitter - that being said i have the graph and other ideas from the book saved to refer back to.
Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) can evoke a wide spectrum of feelings when broached with any individual. Why? For the simple reason that DEI is fundamentally concerned with shifting perspectives and guiding principles. It should come as no surprise, then, that many firms fail to make progress even after implementing a DEI strategy and many initiatives. The novel approach presented in Beyond Discomfort includes four distinct tenets of leadership and the corresponding emotional reactions to DEI. Nadia Nagamootoo founded Avenir, a DEI consultant, and is a chartered psychologist, certified coach, and MBA. She helps firms speed up the process of developing an inclusive and welcoming environment for all employees.
One of the strengths of "Beyond Discomfort" is its ability to balance theoretical insights with practical advice. Nagamootoo draws on her vast experience as a DEI consultant to offer real-world examples and case studies that illustrate the challenges and opportunities of implementing DEI strategies. This makes the book not only an informative read but also a valuable resource for leaders and practitioners looking to make tangible progress in their DEI efforts.
However, "Beyond Discomfort" is not without its challenges. The depth and complexity of the subject matter can sometimes make for a dense read, and some readers may find certain sections of the book to require careful and deliberate engagement. Nevertheless, Nagamootoo's clear and concise writing style helps to mitigate this, making complex concepts accessible to a broad audience.
Thank you so much to netgalley and the publishers for this ARC for an honest review.
