Thank you NetGalley and Inkubator Books for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I got through this book super quickly and it was easy to read, so it would probably be a good choice for beginners to the thriller genre.
However, it did turn out to be rather predictable and the twists that the author attempted to include didn’t have the intended impact. The feeling of suspense just wasn’t there and I was unfortunately disappointed in this read.
I really enoyed this book. It started out a bit slow but once it took off I could not put it down.
The book is well written and has great, unpredictable twists. I recommend giving it a read!
Thank you, Net Galley for sending me this ARC to read before publication.
Alicia, Carina's godchild, shows up at the Ruff's family home with nowhere to go and they allow her to stay until they can find her family. But, Alicia, has comes with secrets that stem back to another part of Carina's life.
This book reminded me of the movie, "The Orphan" because something isn't quite right with the new daughter in both stories. It was a easy read, fast paced and a short story that comes together quickly.
I mostly enjoyed the story until the end though I'd consider this more a drama than a thriller, which isn't what I like. I've read quite a few thrillers where the story had a lot of potential and then the ending has so much happen at once that it seems far fetched and unrealistic. This is one of those. While those aren't my favorite type of thriller, those that enjoy a family drama with many secrets will enjoy this as well.
The Godchild tells the story of parents Carina and Don, their children Tegan, Arthur, and Ethan. They seem to be living a normal life, when one night a young woman comes to their door. She identifies herself as Alicia, Carinas best friend’s daughter, and Carinas Goddaughter. Alicia tells of her hard life and how she is looking for a place to stay, and Carina and her family take her in, but at what cost?
This was a great thriller, with lots of different layers. It definitely kept me guessing! I enjoyed seeing the growth of characters, and how family members were able to support one another. Thank you to NetGalley and to the author and publisher of this book for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Really enjoyed this book! It was fast-paced, and kept you engaged the whole time. Lots of unexpected happenings that made me keep reading! Really enjoyed the characters and how the whole book came together. Great read!
Thanks to NetGalley and Inkubator books for allowing me to read this ARC.
Miranda Rijks delivers a captivating and suspenseful tale with "The Godchild." From the first page to the last, this book keeps you on the edge of your seat with its fast-paced plot and intriguing characters.
The story follows Alicia, a seemingly innocent young woman who turns up on her godmother's doorstep after her own mother disappears. As Alicia integrates into her godmother's family, suspicions begin to arise about her true intentions. When sixteen-year-old Tegan is accused of a terrible crime, the family's life descends into chaos, and dark secrets are unearthed.
Rijks' writing style is gripping and keeps you hooked from start to finish. The pacing of the story is excellent, with twists and turns that kept me guessing until the very end. I found myself unable to put the book down, eager to unravel the mysteries surrounding Alicia and her godmother's family.
The character development in "The Godchild" is particularly well-done, especially with Alicia as the main character. Rijks expertly crafts a character who is multi-dimensional and keeps readers guessing about her true nature. The twist at the end caught me completely off guard, and the epilogue left me reeling with its shocking revelation.
Overall, "The Godchild" is a fantastic read that I highly recommend to fans of psychological thrillers. Miranda Rijks has crafted a gripping and suspenseful story that will keep you guessing until the very end. I eagerly anticipate reading more from this talented author in the future.

I thoroughly enjoyed the pace of this book and just when I thought I had it figured out I was proven wrong! The author does a good job with character developer especially with Alicia the main character. She starts out as an innocent young girl but we quickly learn that, that is far from the truth. I had a difficult time putting this book down and look forward to more from this author in the future
The Godchild was a real page turner that will have you hooked from the beginning.
Carina and her husband Don are just sitting down to have dinner with their children Tegan, Arthur, and Ethan. When a knock interrupts them. It's a young girl named Alicia claiming to be Carinas godchild, whom Carina hasn't seen since she was a baby. She says she needs a place to stay because her mom (Gia) is missing. Carina agrees to let her stay for a few days, but it turns into a longer stay.
Everyone seems to love Alicia, who is helpful around the house. Everyone except Tegan, who feels like there is something off about Alicia.
I didn't see the twist at the end coming, and the epilogue had me with my jaw on the floor! It's such a great fast read. I will definitely be reading more of Miranda Rijks books.
Thank you, Netgalley, for a copy of this book.
What a treat to see this come up on NetGalley to review - I had a real soft spot for Miranda Rijks' writing. Rijks' has a fabulous way of presenting a thriller in a way that is exciting but easy to read and The Godchild was no different. A few twists and turns, interesting characters and snippets of a backstory which helped to explain the present day. It was fast paced, well written and entertaining and I like the scattering of family drama, mixed in with the troubles of being a high schooler (especially when your mum is the head of the school!). The Godchild ended with one final twist - just the way I like my thrillers - another stunner from Miranda Rijks.
Great for fans of the movie "Orphan"!
While this book had great potential, it just did not read well to me.
Solid story line, but I found myself dozing off while reading it, in the middle of the day with coffee.
TOTAL FAST PACED THRILLER - highly recommend if you are in a bit of a reading slump.
Let me tell you, I have never read a book so fast in my life!!
The amount of twists and turns was completely addictive.
I never saw the ending, completely astonished.
Just read ittttt!
The Godchild by Miranda Rijks is her latest thriller and once again, I wasn’t expecting that outcome and she outsmarted me once again. I love her writing style and loved all the characters. I can’t wait to see what Miranda has up her sleeve next! Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this early release in exchange for my honest review. To be published March 31, 2024. A great book to add to your collection!!
The Godchild was a great quick and easy read that kept me guessing until the end. Tegan's family is completely normal until her mother's goddaughter, Alicia, shows up at their house one evening saying she has nowhere else to go. Tegan's family takes her in, but there's something about Alicia that Tegan just doesn't like, even though the rest of her family seems enamored by their new guest.
I loved the way this book was written and that it was a fast read. It was easy to follow and the plot kept moving, which made me keep reading. I definitely wasn't bored during this story! I will be looking for more books by this author, for sure.
Thanks to NetGalley and Inkubator books for allowing me to read this ARC. All thoughts in this review are my own.
Holy guacamole! I did NOT see all that coming! This was a great thriller with a couple of really good twists! If you like suspense, you’ll LOVE this one!
The book is so messed up and twisted. There are so many twists and turns. The ending was so twisted and jaw dropping. The revelation at the end shook me. I am wondering why I didn’t read this book before? It has been narrated in dual timelines.
The writing is so gripping and the book kept me on the edge of my seat. This is my first book of this author and I am intrigued, the author knows how to grip readers. The book is suspenseful. Carina and Don had a normal family until Alicia arrived. They were living with their children including Tegan, Arthur and Ethan. Carina believed that Alicia is Gina’s daughter and her Godchild. Alicia started taking care of everyone and she became the daughter Carina always wanted. But strange things started happening and Carina had to deal with the demons of her past. The terrible secrets came out of nowhere and it upended their lives and ruined a perfect family. By adding a right amount of suspense and enough twists to grip readers, the author has written a twisted psychological thriller.
Thank you Author, Publisher and Netgalley.
Twisty and diabolical, this story has it all. I didn’t see the twists coming and it kept me on the edge of my seat. This is my second novel by this author and I will continue to read more. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
4 stars!
Such a good read! The characters were all very interesting and had more depth that I initially thought. I really liked the way the twists and surprises were revealed bit by bit. It kept me fully engaged and I did not want to put this one down.
It was my first book by Miranda Rijks and i'll definitely be on the look out for others!
Thank you NetGalley and Inkubator Books for the ARC!
I just finished reading "The Godchild" by Miranda Rijks, and it was a really exciting book! The story kept me hooked with its mystery and surprises.
The characters in the book are interesting, and I liked how their secrets and reasons for doing things were revealed bit by bit. The main character's journey was cool, and the way they dealt with other people was interesting.
The story's pace was good, making it easy to read without getting bored. There were lots of surprises that I didn't see coming, and that made it more fun. I always wanted to know what would happen next.
The places in the book were described in a way that made me feel like I was there. Whether it was a mysterious location or characters talking to each other, I could imagine it all in my head.
In summary, "The Godchild" by Miranda Rijks is a super exciting story with lots of surprises. The characters are cool, and the way the story is told kept me interested.
When I say I was hooked on this book, I'm not lying! I usually like a little more violence and darkness in my thrillers but this had such a good plot and addictive characters.
I wanted to know what was going on so bad! And did I see it coming? Nope! Brilliantly executed.
Highly recommend this for a popcorn thrillery good time!
"They were just a normal family living normal lives. Then Alicia arrived."
This is a fast paced and fun thriller. I was so sure I knew where the story was going but then it took a totally different narrative. This was a page turner, I truly couldn’t put it down and read it in one day.
The family in this book is messed up in every kind of way but I had a soft spot for Teagan, I felt sorry for her and how badly she was treated by the people around her.
The addictive plot had me going through the pages in no time, so many unlikeable characters and family drama, just how I like it. The ending was one I didn’t see coming, it was as dramatic as the family in this book and I was absolutely here for it!
Thanks to NetGalley and Inkubator Books for a digital ARC copy.
