Jane Chapman nailed it!
The book turned out to be a very old story written by Clement Moore and I am quite surprised the numerous editions from the past few decades!
This new edition provides us with breathtaking artwork and visuals. Just get it when it’s Christmas and it will make the day for the adults who read this book with their children.
Thank you, Sourcebooks Jabberwocky, for the ARC.
This adorable book is a new take on the classic "Twas the Night Before Christmas. This story's characters are all cute animals, the illustrations are eye catching and colorful and I loved looking to see which animals were featured in each. A definite needed addition to your children's favorite Christmas books.
Thank you for providing me with the opportunity to read this advanced copy! I loved everything about it! I can’t wait to get my hands on the hard copy! My kids will absolutely adore this book closer to Christmas and my preschool class will enjoy it as well.
The illustrations were beautiful, fun and not too overwhelming and there was just enough words.
It will be a new favorite in my household!
What a lively and fun rendition of the classic Christmas Eve poem. I loved the boisterous illustrations paired with the nostalgic text.
Adults who grew up with the original 'Twas the Night Before Christmas will find this book very familiar as it adheres pretty closely to the original. Nevertheless, Jane Chapman's bear-themed version and beautiful illustrations lend a lot of fresh charm to this age-old story. A great way to introduce little kids to Christmas traditions and a classic children's story.
Thanks to Sourcebooks Jabberwocky and Netgalley for an eARC in exchange for an honest review!
An animal take on ‘‘twas the night before Xmas. I absolutely loved the illustrations which helped this book move along smoothly. Great story and the dogs instead of reindeer were just adorable.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the arc.
This was a fun reimagining of Twas the Night Before Christmas, where Santa was a polar bear and his sleigh was led by flying dogs. The cadence and rhyming are obviously great, and the pictures of all the animals celebrating Christmas are beautiful! I highly recommend this fun children's Christmas book!
'Twas the Night Before Christmas is such a fun spin on the original classic! I LOVED the illustrations full of different critters. Perfect for children who love animals.
I received an ARC from SOURCEBOOKS Kids | Sourcebooks Jabberwocky via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I really like how this illustrator decided to breathe new life into a classic Christmas tale. However, I think that making the decision to change all characters to animals wasn't the best idea. Some of the lines of the story didn't make sense due to this choice. For example, on pages 21-22 there are descriptions of rosy cheeks and a cherry nose. This is almost meaningless because you can't actually see these details on the polar bear playing Santa Claus. On top of that, I thought that this choice was even weirder because in the original, Santa Claus uses deer (ANIMALS) to pull his sleigh. The result for this version was animals using...animals? I understand that this might mean nothing to the young audience reading this book, I still thought that it was a bit odd.
Lastly, I don't think that the words of the original story should be changed due to the illustrator's choice to change the pictures. This happened at least once in this version, and made the text clunky in some spots.
In conclusion, I could have gone without this new version of this story, and it could have been done much better.
Did you read and love all of the Bear books by Jane Chapman? You know: Bear Stays up for Christmas, Bear Snores On, Bear Wants More. Chapman has reimagined Twas the Night Before Christmas within her bear universe. Santa is a polar bear visiting the bear family. And his sleigh is a slay full of dogs. Most of the wording is the same, but some lines are changed to match this version of the story. Everything works together fabulously. This is an excellent addition to a long series or an excellent entry into the Bear books if you’ve never read one before.
The artwork is a solid 5/5, kids will love this. Very cute.
The story is almost identical as the original but with a change in animals.
I think the story could have change a little bit more than it was, but otherwise great.
4.5 stars
Would buy for my toddler. We love Christmas book in this house!
A cute take on the classic story! I loved the illustrations and the amount of detail put into them. I thought the dogs pulling the sleigh was very cute.
This will definitely be a version to add to our family’s collection!
Everyone knows this favorite loved Christmas tale and many can recite it by heart, it's certainly a classic to read every year when the snow begins to fall. This version is special though, as it's filled with the most wonderful illustrations of animals as a tale of holiday adventure unfolds. I adore all of the bears and dogs and owls and the many other creatures; it's fun to search each page to see which animals may appear. I am SO looking forward to reading this one again at the holidays.
Super cute take on the classic poem. I loved that instead of reindeer the sleigh was pulled by cats & dogs. I will be purchasing this one for my son!

Jane Chapman once again does an incredible job with her beloved illustrations now in bringing this classic Christmas tale to life with a little bit of a new twist from author Clement Moore. Moore does a great job of sticking to the T’was the Night Before Christmas storyline and familiar wording flow adding some new lovable characters; polar bear Santa and his team of canine reindeer. The illustrations in this book are adorable! It would make a great addition to any child’s holiday picture book collection.
This book was so cute! Such a fun twist on the classic Night Before Christmas story. My son loves dogs! So he especially loved this book. I love polar bears and thought it was cute that Santa was an animal too. The illustrations so fun and whimsical! I really can’t rave about this book enough! It was just so cute!
Such a sweet book and a great little twist to the beloved classic. I love how Santa is portrayed as a bear and instead of reindeer he has dogs flying his sleigh. Adorable! The illustrations are vibrant and beautiful, and I know our littlest library patrons would LOVE this book. It would make a great addition to our storytime hour during the Christmas season. Oh, and I also love that the origins of the classic 'Twas the Night Before Christmas are included in the back of the book. I recommend it to everyone!
