I am usually skeptical about books set in the sub-continent, written by umm, those not from there. But I found this to be an okay read. The love story is nice, but it would have been better if the book was a bit shorter.

Life in for the foreign service must have been pretty cushy as the British rule of India was ending. It's clear the author has had experience in India and isn't afraid to talk about the sexism and racism that was prevalent then. Both as historical fiction and a romance, the story worked for me.

Sorry it took me so long to get to this. I started it a few times and it never really stuck, which I guess says a lot. It was very interesting being immersed in and learning more about Indian culture but I wasn't that engrossed in the story.
