There's such a difference between being polite and being civil or kind. Politeness is just the way we learn to act to fit into certain social groups, but with civility, people learn to treat people as people. This book talks about why that is so important and how we can work to be more civil. There are great examples on what to do and fun examples from popular culture.
I love how Hudson explains the consequences of what can happen when people are civil: the world is more just, and people are better friends and citizens. There are also important discussions on modern times and how to apply these concepts to the digital world. The narrator does a great job keeping a nice tone and it's an enjoyable experience. Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this
I posted a review on Amazon, but it isn't public yet. I also gave a review toward the end of my substack article going live this Wednesday. Ms. Hudson did a wonderful job of looking at civility and manners through the lens of dignity. Civility requires us to see others as humans instead of problems or obstacles, and to treat them accordingly. Manners are a tool that can be used to treat people with dignity, or to manipulate them with corrosive power. We need more books like this one - I will recommend this book to my students!
