I tend to shy away from books described as bittersweet, but this I could not stay away from. It followed Scarlett, a fashion designer, on the day she died in an accident. She was still in the world though, watching the rippling effect of her death on her loved ones.
Evie, her roommate and best friend from when they were ten years old had a diagnosis that left her in a state of just existing but not living, so Scarlett was worried about her. Nate, the man Evie blamed for Scarlett's death, kept showing up and trying to make up for the pain he blamed himself for causing.
I got to see Scarlett wrestling with choices she'd made in the past, seeing things from a different perspective. Evie pushed herself to embrace new adventures and try to move on without Scarlett. New relationships formed despite the odds, and brokenness was tended to even though not yet mended.
The final chapters almost took me out but soothed the ache. The narration was beautiful especially in those moments. I loved every bit of this story.
Thank you to Netgalley and Publisher for an ALC in exchange for an honest review.
Beautiful, emotional story that's beautifully written and well paced! You definitely go through all the emotions with this one. It's a testament to female friendship and not your typical romance, but in a way that I found refreshing. It captures the actual hardships of life without leaving you completely depressed at the end. Scarlett, Evie, and Nate are all well-drawn characters that I was invested in. I recommend this audiobook!
This is a heartwarming book about love, grief, and illness. It really focused on how much your actions impact those around you. This book was wonderful, and I’d highly recommend it! The story alone was awesome, and so was the audiobook! I feel like the book did focus a lot on Evie’s diagnosis, and at some times that was kind of just dragging on. I understand that it was part of the plot but it was taken to an extreme imo. I listened to this via audiobook- and the narrator was wonderful!
Thank you to NetGalley and Hachett Audio for this ARC!
First, thank you to NetGalley & Hachette for the ALC of One Moment
This is such a well written story and I loved it much more than I expected to. Hearing the story told from Scarlett's point of view after she died and without her being able to interfere in the "real world" was almost refreshing - it's not a POV readers typically get to experience.
Surprisingly, I didn't cry. I think because the story brought so much peace and closure in the end that I didn't have to feel overwhelmingly sad for anyone & feeling the effects of her death on her best friend, those involved in the accident, and her parents with her instead of feeling their grief/loss firsthand probably helped a bit too. I loved the growth we got to see in Evie while she navigated her grief and the way Nate was ready and willing to pull her through it from the start. I'm still conflicted on where Scarlett's growth led her in the end and I go back and forth on wanting the ending to be different as I sit with it.
Overall a great read and I'm happy I took the time to listen to it.
This book could be a trigger for someone with a progressive autoimmune disease as it really pulls at the heartstrings but the author, Becky Hunter did an amazing job. Told from the observation of Scarlett from beyond her reflecting on people's reactions and their own personal struggles tells a beautiful and hopeful story of friendship, sudden death and living life to the fullest. The narrator does a wonderful job capturing each of the characters and emotions.
It is a well done story. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the audio ARC of this book. It comes out on March 12- great read!
I absolutely loved this! I listened to the audiobook and the narrator was incredible. I was so invested in whether Evie would be able to forgive Nate for the accident. I teared up at the ending, when Evie played the violin - such a beautiful moment.
Audio Review:
I love books about female friendships. This had that! Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC. I thought it was heartbreaking to read, but it also kept me interested. Good narrating.
One Moment, Written by Becky Hunter and narrated by Heather Long had me in pieces by the end.
Evie and Scarlett are lifelong friends who live together in a flat in London. They travel through lifes challenges, laugh and bicker, but, one day they have an argument and tragically, Scarlett is run over while trying to save a fallen cyclist (Nate) and they do not get to reconcile. These factors alone set up for multiple storylines within the book, let alone Evie adapting to life with MS, when she is blindsided by meeting Nate at the funeral and Scarletts otherworldy POV (and these are still just scratching the surface)
The book is beautifully written and Heather Long narrated it with grace and a beautiful cadence throughout, switching efortlessly between roles and seamlessly between chapters
As a debut, this was impressive and an outstanding start to what is likely to be a stellar writing career
Thank you to Netgalley, Hachette Audio, Forever, the author Becky HUnter and the narrator Heather Long for this beautiful ALC. My review is left voluntarily and all opinions are my own
4.5 stars! One Moment was such a heartwarming and inspiring novel. Evie, Scarlett and Nate were well rounded characters that drew you. I was so invested in this story. This is not your typical romance novel and I'm here for it. I found myself happy, sad and mad at every character. Heather Long was a fantastic narrator, she has such a southing voice.

I really enjoyed this one. It has a strong focus on grief, reflecting back on your life, and the power of friendship. Scarlett suddenly loses her life and in her afterlife is able to see how her loved ones are dealing with their grief while she also works through her own grief of losing her life. She definitely works through the stages of grief, along with having to watch her best friend Evie do so as well. I enjoyed that we got both Scarlett and Evie's POV in this book because we were able to hear their thoughts on the same thing that was going on in the book. It also spoke to how well these two knew each other and how although they were bestfriends, it seemed as if they were do close it was more like they were sisters. Evie also has MS in this book and talks about her struggles of having that diagnosis and how it has affected her life. I really appreciated that representation in this book. This story provided a lot of reflective moments for myself, and some things that I will keep in mind and carry on with in my life. With death, we always think of the last moments we had with that person and it is important to keep in mind in life if that is how you want your potential last moment to be with someone. That was definitely my biggest takeaway. We get so caught up in life that sometimes I think we get too focused on ourselves and not our relationships with others. My friendships and relationships shape who I am and what I do, and they are something that maybe I should be more appreciative of at times. So take the time do to that. Overall, I really enjoyed Scarlett and Evie. I am a huge romance lover, and don't get me wrong; I love a good love story. But even more, I love stories about a powerful friendship that is still a love story but in a different light. I definitely recommend you read this one if you do too.
It was a lovely audiobook. Romance. Friendship. Family. Plus big questions with no real life answers. I connected with all of the characters and rooted for them all the way though. The ending was not my cup of tea but it fit the book well.
A good read for those who enjoy romantic comedies but want a bit more substance.
I think the most important, heartfelt and real books are the ones about female friendships. This book is sweet and heart wrenching about how singular moments can change lives. I loved the dual perspectives- one living and one dead. Just a great book all around.
There is NOTHING that can truly break me down emotionally like stories about female friendships, especially when they don’t shy away from the hard stuff.
This book had me SOBBING when it came to Evie and Scarlett. When the loss of a friendship is center of a book, I’m eating it up through messy tears.
Scarlett dies from a sudden accident and her best friend Evie is having a hard time coming to terms with the loss. Nate, a man who was there when it happened, a man who holds some of the responsibility for the situation Scarlett wound up in keeps popping up in Evie’s day to day, clearly wanting to make amends. But the closer they get, the more Evie is at a loss of what to do. Nate is sweet and pushes her out of the comfort zone her MS keeps her in, but can she come to terms with the role he had in Scarlett’s death?
This was rough!!! It was an emotional rollercoaster. Female friendships really do make a read worth it for me and this had it with such a twist. The narration is so well done. The pacing and the tone injected such a vibe into this book.
The narrator of the book is the woman who dies at the beginning! It's so good! The narrator was phenomenal, smooth, and entertaining. This book is the epitome of women and the strength we have. I also love that they talk about the friend having MS and how she has to deal with it and feels like a burden. I can truly relate to this book so much! I want and need more books like this one in my life! There is nothing I would take out of this book everything is so nicely intertwined. This shows love in all of its forms friendship, parental, old love, new love, and love that is unbreakable.
One moment changed so many lives. This is a uniquely told story told from the perspective of the victim of a terrible accident when she died and after and her best friend who lives with the aftermath. The novel weaves in the lives of others close to both girls as well as the person that was there at the crash. I liked the story and the narrator but there was something missing for me that I can not put my finger on. It maybe the mood I was in but I wanted more.
Thank you to Net Galley, Becky Hunter and Hachette Audio for the opportunity to preview this audio book and the opinions are my own.
One Moment is expected to be released March 12, 2024.

Told creatively from the perspectives of two best friends - one living, and one recently deceased. The power of a single moment to change a life, to alter a path, and to bring together two souls who might never have met.
This is a stunning debut! At first I wondered what I was reading, but it clicked quickly and I didn’t want to put it down! Evie and Scarlett are best friends, roommates, chosen sisters. When Scarlett dies in a terrible accident, Evie is left to pick up the pieces, and try not to pull the rest of herself away from the world she’s already drawn out of. An unlikely friend - the man partially responsible for Scarlett’s death - makes her realize she’s capable of more than she thinks.
I LOVED the way Scarlett and Evie both had perspectives! Scarlett was seeing many of the same things Evie was, but with more intel, so to speak. Seeing Evie grieving and growing was just beautiful and I loved the whole story of redemption.
Okay. No more details - just pick this one e up when it’s out!
An emotional and beautifully written book about friendship loss health and love. Loved the dual POV from Evie and Scarlett.
I actually really enjoyed this book. I thought it was a unique concept of what would you do if you could watch your friends and family after your death and then have the chance to change the outcome of the event in which you died. I loved that this one had MS representation and also mental health representation. This one gave story of growth between both Savannah and Evie both in life and death. This book definitely gave my something to think about.
Not me actually sobbing to this book. A first read of Becky Hunters and it was such a feel good and bad? type of story. Evie and Scarlett are two best friends navigating life and love when Scarlett is unexpectedly killed. Now she’s watching from limbo as Evie grieves and grows becoming a stronger version of herself while holding true to the bond they shared. Multiple points of views keeps the readers engaged and rooting for the growth both characters didn’t know they needed. Narration and production was perfectly executed and easy to listen to.
This is a sweet novel about love, friendship and grief. It takes a unique perspective on the ripple effect of one’s actions and reflects on the outcomes after death. I wanted to love this book, but for me it was just okay. In my opinion, the book unnecessarily focused on Evie’s medical diagnosis. I understand the importance it had in the plot, but just seemed over done to the point of redundant. I listened to this book on audio and found the narrator to be enjoyable and easy to follow.
