This was a beautiful story about friendship and finding love after loss. While this is not the normal type of story I gravitate to, I’m so glad I picked this up. This story is one that will stick with me for some time.
Do you ever just need a book that will grip your heart and let you have a good cry? Hunter explores themes of grief, loss, chronic illness, love, and friendship, and examines how moments we may consider small, create ripples that can change the trajectory of our lives and leave lasting imprints.
This story is vulnerable and messy, and will leave your heart tender as Hunter reflects on how do we move through life when these people we build lasting connections with, who carry pieces of our hearts, and become woven into the fabric of our lives are no longer physically with us? How do you carry on when you receive news that alters your plans and the future you once envisioned isn’t a possibility? I was moved to tears several times throughout as Scarlett and Evie entwined their lives, grappled with the unexpected, shared moments of joy, and offered strength and support from afar.
At the heart of this book is the reminder to never wait to tell those you love and hold dear how much they mean to you, of their impact and worth. Hunter also reminds readers that as you move through life after loss, to not be bound by fear and allow yourself to seize opportunities to experience joy and fulfillment.
Heather Long’s narration was phenomenal and the emotion delivered in her performance brought me to tears. Reading a physical copy would still be a moving experience, but listening to Long bring Evie and Scarlett’s story to life was incredibly impactful and memorable.
Through Evie and Scarlett, Hunter reminds readers of our humanity and the messiness, complexity, heartbreak, but also the joy that thrusts us into new experiences and each others’ lives. If you enjoy complex, bittersweet stories about friendship and love, or have ever found yourself in tears when Elphaba and Glinda listening to sing ‘For Good’ (🙋🏼♀️), then One Moment is the book for you.
A beautifully moving story about female friendship and love with a unique magical realism twist. Ooof that ending!! This book was a surprise delight. Evie is devastated when her best friend Scarlett dies suddenly in a tragic accident and it takes the help of a complete stranger who witnessed things to help her learn to live life to the fullest even with her Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis.
I really enjoyed this book! It was heartwarming with great disability rep, a unique form of dual perspective narration told from both Evie's POV and the spirit of Scarlett who witnesses her friend fall in and roots for her to move on with her life. Highly recommended for fans of authors like Rebecca Serle and Josie Silver.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early digital and audio copy in exchange for my honest review! This great on audio read by Heather Long and was written by a new to me author. I can't wait to read more of what Becky Hunter writes next!!
