Thank you for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review! This story was so fun. I love a story that makes you laugh out loud- and this one was definitely it. I also really enjoyed the narrator. This was my first story by this author, and I truly enjoyed it so much. I will definitely be reading more from this author.
Thank you to Forever Publishing & Hachette Audio for my review copies!
I am deep into my historical romance era, and have been loving these historical romances with a touch of mystery!
Lady Charlotte is sick of her parent’s plans for her life, especially when they announce her imminent engagement to the Viscount Hawley, who has already been widowed twice under mysterious circumstances. In order to get out from under her parent’s thumb, she decides to go into business with her cousins. Together, they expand the cousins’ coffee house to allow women and men to mix.
I absolutely loved the salons and coffee houses, and this culture of conversations! It added some gravity to a story that was often over the top and humorous. The cousins have a pet parrot, of course, since they are descended from pirates.
Dr. Matthew Talbot, best friend of Lady Charlotte’s twin brother and younger brother to Viscount Hawley, is the love interest and I absolutely adored him. He is stern and spends most of his time traveling and studying nature and medicine.
I felt like the plot moved fast and there was a lot going on, and I absolutely could not put it down. I love when the lovers have something big to work on, that gives them something to do while they get to know each other. The animals provided some levity, making it feel like a cozier romance/mystery than it otherwise could have.
I really enjoyed this one and would love to see this turned into a series!
🎧 Narrator Katy Soby does an excellent job bringing these characters to life, and I definitely recommend the audiobook!
This was such a breath of fresh air! A good palate cleanser in between books dealing with heavier topics. I loved the narrator's voice, the witty banter, the historical details and the swoonworthy romance. Thank you Netgalley for this hidden gem of an ARC!
I couldn’t listen to the audio because it was corrupt and cut off the chapters partway through. I reached out to ask for a fixed version since this was archived and had no response so…
Thank you Forever Books and Hachette Audio for the gifted copies of Lady Charlotte.
What a fun read! Lady Charlotte is not just a historical romance as it might first seem - it’s a genre bending romp that that includes arranged marriage, murder, pirates, found family, and true love. I really had no idea I was in for but enjoyed it so much. Here’s what I liked:
- Lady Charlotte is a badass. The primary storyline focuses on thwarting her betrothal to a homicidal psychopath, which she takes the lead on. She’s fierce but feminine, willing to put her trust in a good man but never rely solely on him. And of course, in the end, she gets her man.
- There’s a diverse cast of secondary characters that bring depth to the story. Charlotte’s mixed race cousin is portrayed as an intellectual and savvy businesswoman, despite being shunned by high society for her parentage. There’s a gang of pirates (or pretend pirates?) that offer Charlotte advice. And we can’t forget the talking parrot, whose antics bring the perfect dose of comedic relief.
- The author’s note discussing the historical accuracy of the plot and any liberties she took (not many!) was so helpful. I sometimes struggle with historical romances, not knowing how realistic a plot point is or if the author ignored a major anachronism to advance a plot point, so having this author’s note brought the closure and confirmation I needed to enjoy the book.
Audio: I thought the narrator did a fine job bringing the story to life. I especially like her accents/voices for all the different characters - I could tell the difference in two characters’ social classes just by her voice. Given the many voices, I would LOVE to listen to this with a full cast production - it would really elevate the experience - but it’s solid as is.
This audiobook was witty, compelling, swoon-worthy, and just downright captivated me from the very first chapter!
While I loved the premise of the story and was grateful to receive the audiobook, the audio files were corrupt. The chapters ended mid-sentence and I missed out on half the story. I reached out to the publisher and was told the issue was fixed but the audiobook was removed from this platform and I can no longer redownload it. I luckily have the eARC and will continue my journey there.
Lady Charlotte Always Gets Her Man is a cute cozy romantic mystery by award winning author, Violet Marsh. In this novel, Lady Charlotte, who has been brought up in elite society, learns that she will soon be betrothed to Viscount Hawley Talbot. Unfortunately, Charlotte and others suspect that Hawley murdered his two previous wives and she doesn’t want to be the third. Charlotte has known Hawley’s brother, Matthew, for years, and falls in love with him; he is a physician and not recognized in her social world. Charlotte isn’t afraid to break society’s rules, and works hard to prove Hawley has committed crimes as well as murder before her father insists she marry him. Matthew and some cousins help Charlotte with the case.
The storyline is cute; there are several characters that are interesting. Marsh does a good job of developing them so that readers can relate. Marsh has done her research as to the rules of society at the time and location that this historical novel takes place. It is charming, and if readers are lucky enough to listen to the audible version, they will be delighted by the narration since the narrator has a perfect English accent.
The novel is light, fun, and goes quickly to the dénouement. There are plenty of twists and turns, and Charlotte turns out to be one who isn’t afraid to break the strict rules of her societal world.
Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this book.
There was so much going on i was getting lost in the point of the book. Felt like a bunch of ideas crammed into one book and it just didn't work for me
I found this book to be quite enjoyable. I enjoyed the characters and the rapport between them was really entertaining. The premise of the story was interesting and I enjoyed the investigative aspect of the story. I also enjoyed learning about the backstories of the characters and the hidden lives that they keep from others. The pacing of this story was just right and allowed for character development but also kept the story moving along so that it didn't drag. I'd be interested in learning more about these characters or some of the supporting characters.
I was able to listen to the audiobook and enjoyed the narrator and the changes in accent that she used. I do think there was a problem with the file though as many of the chapters especially at the beginning of the book were cut off. Luckily I had access to a written copy as well so I was able to finish the chapters that way, it detracted from the story a bit, but I think that if the file is whole the narration will keep the story flowing quite well.
I received an advanced copy of this audiobook from Netgalley. All opinions are my own.
This book was fantastic! I enjoyed this historical romance that had such a strong female main character.
Lady Charlotte is in her mid-twenties and unwed. Her parents decided that they are tired of waiting and arrange for her to marry a duke. Lady Charlotte is quite upset to learn the identity of her betrothed is Viscount Hawley, who'd been widowed twice in the last year. Both of Hawley's wives died of mysterious circumstances and Lady Charlotte did not wish to become his third victim. With dreams to invest in her cousin's coffee house, Lady Charlotte goes in search of the truth about Viscount Hawley's wives to protect her future.
With a crazy parrot and his monkey love, the supporting characters in this novel made it quite well-rounded. The narrator was enjoyable and brought the story to life well.
4 out of 5 stars.
I wasn’t able to read and review this because the audio wasn’t working . It also wasn’t fixed in time , but I will be reading this eventually because the small snippet I got was so good. We love good brothers best friend d romance. I am trying. To give more into historical romance , and I think this would be a perfect one for me to get into. I feel that the cover was appealing and enticing that it sticks out just enough for readers to look at it and want to add it to their shelves
This was a quick fun romance audiobook. The narration was done well although the book would just stop at random moments.
The storyline was good. An intellectual hero, Dr. Matthew Talbot, who is trying to understand the death of his brothers 2 wives. A bold heroine, Lady Charlotte, who is bold and brave and is to marry Matthew's brother.
Together they solve the mystery of the wives, build on their childhood friendship to fall in love.
There is a lot going on in this book, a romance, a mystery, freeing children, women's right but it all does come together.
Unfortunately, the audiobook had some technical issues, making it challenging to listen to. The audio would only play part of a chapter before moving to the next. This was experienced by a few people I know, so it was not isolated to me.
From what I did hear, I liked the narrators' voices, intonations, pacing, etc.
I did read the book via eARC and thoroughly enjoyed it!
This was a cute story. I liked that it had some romance and adventure throughout the book.
I enjoyed listening to the audiobook. The narrator was easy to listen to and didn’t have cheesy voices for the men in the story. Sometimes I feel that the narrators try to hard for their voices.
I gave it 4 stars because some of the events in the story felt to come out of the blue without much connection to the rest of the story.
✨Jeepers!✨
There was a lot happening here and I was thoroughly confused for most of it. It was nice, but not very memorable (the reason I rounded my star rating down for Goodreads). I don’t think I’d need to reread this one, but I’ll definitely keep reading the series. This was a debut, so I’m excited to see the writing grow. The voice was definitely there, but I would love to see it get a little more kooky and funny.
My confusion had a lot to do with the fact that I received an ALC that had several sections just cut from the book. I didn’t realize I was missing crucial plot points until I was at 27% of the book, which was actually 36% with the missing parts added! I stopped the ALC and grabbed the eARC from NetGalley to try to catch up but ultimately just listened through Spotify.
The audiobook itself was well performed, although the hero’s voice left a bit to be desired. The Scottish brogue was rather underwhelming. I would, overall, recommended the narrator to others. The finished audiobook didn’t skip any parts, so I’d also recommend reading that way if you’re interested.
So take my review with a grain of salt, because I’d have maybe had a better experience if I wasn’t so confused. The pacing was still a bit wonky though, and it lacked tension (for me) since we knew who the villain was from the start. He was a nasty character but also didn’t feel all that dangerous to our characters? Definitely a bit of a Scooby Doo villain. Over the top and a bit theatrical, but not all that interesting or nuanced.
Since we knew the villain from the start, I was kind of just like…cool, so where’s the rest of the plot? The hero was a bit of a vigilante and the heroine did get shot saving him, so that was fun. Charlotte felt like a Daphne for sure. Don’t underestimate her just because she wears pretty dresses and is a lady!! Also bonus points for a supporting character named Hannah >>>
⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/5
There were no on-page sex scenes or even heavy petting. The story didn’t call for it though!
I received an ALC from Hachette Audio and an eARC via NetGalley. All opinions are honest and my own.
Thank you Netgalley, Hatchett Audio, and Forever for this ALC!
- I had so much fun reading this one! The mysteries throughout really helped drive the plot and make it hard to put down, and the romance was so cute!
- This one does require some suspending of belief, especially if you are a big historical romance reader. There are a few things that seem unbelievable, such as how often Charlotte manages to not be with her parents or a chaperone. There's a couple things she does that feels like they would result in her getting "grounded", but I was able to focus on the rest of the plot so it didn't take too much away from the reading.
- I loveee odd pets in romances, and Pan and Banshee were perfect! It reminded me so much of the hedgehogs and kittens in the Wild Wynchesters or the monkey in Artfully Yours!
- Seeing the dynamics between Charlotte, Matthew, and Alexander was excellent, especially seeing how the secrets between them caused tension.
- The narration was excellent, and it was so easy to sink into the story!
- I loved Hannah and Sophia, and I wish there had been more about their relationship with Charlotte!
dnf 31% I tried so hard to get into this book. I tried both the book and the audio and by 30% I was just bored. I almost never dnf historical romances but this one just did nothing for me. I was confused about the time period from the jump and literally had to flip to the authors note to figure out when it was set (1750s). For the love of god historical romance authors, you need to tell us when your book are set. Once I knew the time period I was furious about the cover of the book. Why does her dress and hair look like that? why are they dancing as a couple? why is the woman in the back wearing an empire waist gown? trade published historical romances will turn me from the genre entirely, I have yet to find one that is actually good. Charlotte and Matthew were fine characters but the book spent too much time on them separately that there was no attraction or heat. I know I only made it 30%, but there should be some tension between the two. The book even had the cop out of of they grew up together, so there could have easily been some longing from childhood leading into adulthood, but no. Other than constantly being told they grew up together they do not have the familiarity of two people who grew up together. The writing is clunky and awkwardly phrased. Literally it felt like a weird mix of modern lingo, some historically large words requiring a dictionary, and random historical facts. I had hoped some of this would have been resolved during the editing process prior to the release of the final copy, but as I was listening to the audiobook after publication via Spotify clearly these issues were not resolved. The book has glaring plot holes and the characters are cartoonishly written as good or evil rather than as multidimensional people. I can't make myself continue.
Audiobook: The narration by Katy Sobey helped me to keep going for as long as I did.
Lady Charlotte Always Gets Her Man by Violet Marsh
Historical romance.
When Lady Charlotte Lovett is told of her own arranged betrothal to man that is rumored to have killed his previous two wives, she impulsively runs away. She privately invests in a coffee house and helps set it up as a unique two faced business model.
Dr. Matthew Talbot is happy to help Charlotte expose his brother, Viscount Hawley for his criminal and cruel past. Falling for her is easy but keeping her safe will take careful planning.
🎧 I alternated reading this between an ebook and audiobook. The audiobook performance is performed by Katy Sobey who does a wonderful job with several different character voices in a British accent. Emotions and banter are brought to life among the aristocracy of the ton and the back rooms of a coffee house. A large diverse cast includes multiple classes that makes this more than just your average historical romance. Parrot and monkey included.
I listened to this at 1.5 which is my standard preferred speed.
The advantage of an audiobook for historical romances is the accent of England which I certainly don’t hear when reading the book.
Loved the representation of the third son being an doctor, and a woman being a partial owner of a coffee house, both unusual for the times. The best friend and brother was super supportive and I enjoyed the wide cast of other unique characters connected with the coffee house.
Wonderful romance too. Enjoyable and interesting.
I received a copy of this from NetGalley and publisher Forever.
This is a fun Georgian Era mystery romance book with lots of fascinating characters, including a parrot and a monkey. There were definitely a few plot holes and a couple moments stretched plausibility to breaking point, but overall it was an enjoyable read.
The audiobook is narrated by Katy Sobey. Her performance was delightful. However, I do wish there had been a second narrator for Mathew’s chapters. I liked the intro and outro music and felt it set the tone well. The end of the audiobook includes a historical note which I found interesting and helpful.
