I would like to thank NetGalley and Atria/Emily Bestler Books for providing me with an advance e-galley of this book in exchange for an honest review. Look for it now in your local and online bookstores and libraries.
Wow, what a ride! The Unraveling immediately sucked me in, and I read it in 24 hours. The narrator, Meredith, a psychiatrist in her 30s, suffered a terrible loss 18 months ago. The loss upended her personal life and career, but someone else suffered even more and she has felt immense guilt about it ever since. Early on, she sees and begins to follow Gabriel, whose life she feels she ruined. They become entangled in each other's lives, but Meredith keeps making poor decisions. Has she put herself in grave danger? I found this so compulsively readable. I had to know what would happen. It's kind of like watching an accident in slow motion. You cringe knowing something shocking is going to happen, but you can't look away. Highly recommend if you're looking for a read that will have you in a chokehold!
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for providing this ARC. All thoughts are my own.
4.5 rounded up. WOW that was truly a ride. Having only finished the book moments ago, I’m still trying to wrap my brain around all the twists and turns it took. The first half was a little slower for me and I just could not see where this book was going. Well let me tell you, I have finished and I could’ve never saw where it was going. So many twists and turns.
Thank you net galley for the advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
It took me forever to get into this story, and—if I’m honest—I’m not sure I ever completely got there.
I loved the idea of a psychological thriller about the emotional spiraling of a grief-stricken psychiatrist. There is something intriguing about a doctor who helps others but is unable to help herself. Meredith recently faced a tragedy, and the author does a good job of portraying her bleak life. I also understood her sense of guilt. Unfortunately, it doesn’t make up for the predictable storyline and unlikeable characters.
Also, I don’t handle second-hand embarrassment well. No matter how much Meredith justifies her unhealthy obsession with Gabriel, it’s cringey. It made me feel uncomfortable the entire time I was reading the story. Whenever she has the opportunity to do the sensible thing, she does the opposite.
The penny that drops at the end is unnecessary, contrived, and doesn’t add anything to the story. I think I will stick to Vi Keeland’s romance novels.
Meredith McCall is a busy New York psychiatrist with a thriving practice but she is currently on leave due to a horrific tragedy which claimed several lives and has left her dealing with unbearable grief, guilt, loneliness and anger and is in no condition to help her patients when she can't even help herself. Meredith has been self-medicating way too much with alcohol and has withdrawn from all her friends and she is just feeling so lost with no light at the end of the tunnel. She wanders the sidewalks of New York aimlessly for endless hours, day after day hoping to find some relief or answers to her tortured emotions.
Then one day Meredith spots the husband of one of the victims and begins to follow him because he seems happy and that can't be possib!e since he lost so much more than she did and she needs to to find out why! She should know better than that and she knows she's acting irrationally yet she can't stop herself and quickly it begins to turn into an obsession although Meredith doesn't believe she's stalking the man because she just wants to help him and herself if she can find out how he seems to be a highly functioning man while she can barely get out of bed in the morning.
As time passes and Meredith sees a therapist for herself and finally gets back to work, she seems to be doing much better although she is still following HIM while she knows it's wrong and plans to stop but it just may be too late because Meredith has just added a new client to her patient roster and imagine her shock and anxiety when she sees who just walked into her office as the last patient of the day. You know who it is! Coincidence or something a little more sinister? Will Meredith take the bull by the horns and do the right thing or will she get more caught up in the games she has unwittingly been playing although maybe not by herself!
What an entertaining, fast and clever novel! This story was like watching a train wreck when you know you should stop looking but finding yourself drawn to the scene telling yourself all the reasons you need to keep watching. Meredith is a mess. She may have been a good psychiatrist before but she became very unstable and was making poor and some downright stupid decisions for a doctor with her qualifications. Twist after twist, Meredith gets caught in a gigantic spider's web where she could even lose her practice and her license or risk possibly going to jail.
That is how deep she has dug a hole for herself and now she can't find her way back out and she is in trouble, big trouble! The bottom line is, Meredith is really a good person but she's not very smart in almost every decision she makes and I'm glad this is a fiction/thriller because I would hate to think of all the people in therapy having a psychiatrist like her! Creepy!
Sometimes the book was too repetitive at times although it didn't take away from my enjoyment factor just that it could have been a little shorter. When I got to the ending, I couldn't believe what I was reading and had to reread the page over and over again! I loved that unexpected and climatic finale. It pushed up my rating from a 3 1/2 star to a 4 star read!
Try to go in blind while reading this book and don't overanalyze the story, just sit back and enjoy it as you would a really good movie!
I want to thank the publisher "Atria Books" and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this terrific book and any thoughts or opinions expressed are unbiased and mine alone!
I have given a rating of 4 CREEPY AND SURREAL 🌟🌟🌟🌟 STARS!!
I’ve been going back and forth on this one, guys, to be honest. Although I did appreciate the well-crafted and well-paced plot, the writing style, and the intriguing plot twists, I was not too fond of the Main Character, Meredith. It was highly off-putting to see her appear unintelligent and immature, especially given that she is supposed to be a psychiatrist.
I have heard good things about this author but genuinely this was too boring for me and just was not interesting.
This is a thriller and it was sooo good, I couldn’t put this down. I read it in one sitting. Such a good story
Ah, this book. It has enough mystery to make you want to keep reading. It has the drama and bad decisions that make you cringe but also, you know, grab the popcorn. The premise was good. The chapters were fast paced. It wasn't groundbreaking, but it was compelling. 3.8, rounded.
If you're looking for a romance story by Vi, you're not going to get it. This is a psychological thriller that is filled with suspense, drama, head spinning twists and turns around every corner type of story and it hooked me in. It sunk it's claws all the way in. Loved every word.
This book is getting some seriously rave reviews so I had to check it out but as I struggled to even want to read it I have to ask myself why anyone liked this book.
Super quick background: Conner, the FMC's husband, gets hurt playing hockey, gets super addicted to oxy super fast, turns into raging a*hole, steals FMC's prescription pads, writes own scripts, (like a ridiculous number in a very short time), gets drunk while on oxy, drives car, kills Gabriel's wife and daughter.
In the book we get a little bit of the before and mostly the "now" of our FMC's life. She is obviously distraught about what her husband did, but she is also insane. For a psychiatrist, she's extremely, extremely dumb. As in, completely unhinged. Spoilers ahead!
1- she blames herself for what her husband did (using her scrip pad), to the point that she doesn't stand up for herself or her reputation and let's the medical board and groups around town bash her reputation.
2- she stalks the husband, Gabriel, of the wife and child her husband killed because she sees him smiling one day??? how can he be happy? she must know, so she follows him.
3- she thinks that because she never changed her last name, Gabriel doesn't know who she is, EVEN WHEN HE SHOWS UP AT HER OFFICE FOR THERAPY
4- at this point, I was so sick of the ridiculous repetitive nature of the book that I had to start skimming to the parts where something new actually happened, which was not often, but we do introduce a few more points worth mentioning
5- graphic, violent sex with Gabriel in her office during a therapy session
6- comparing herself to a patient who she knows should be committed for obsessive behavior, stalking, possibly bipolar, and yet, liking the comparisons? especially in the violent sex? and getting constantly distracted comparing herself to her patients while also supposedly "helping" her patients?
7 - she is SHOCKED to learn Gabriel knew who she was the entire time? you can't be this dumb and be a therapist I just don't believe it
8- people keep talking about how great the last couple twists where but honestly if Gabriel hadn't also been stalking her nothing else would have worked to end this book. it was just thinly veiled insanity, and the only good thing that came out in the end was that she stopped being a therapist.
Also, this book is labeled as a thriller but there wasn't really anything thrilling to me about being stuck in this psycho's brain. She spends half the book just walking around, looking for the graves of "her victims."
This book was absolutely not for me, but I do appreciate the ARC.
This debut thriller by Vi Keeland did not disappoint! I went into this book, basically blind but was so very thrilled with the outcome. I was able to read it in a couple of days and found myself saying, just one more chapter more times than I usually would. I didn't want to put it down.
Meredith is a Psychiatrist married to a professional hockey player, Connor. During a game, Connor experiences a possible career-altering injury, which is the catalyst for a series of life-altering events.
Whenever I thought I had the plot figured out, a new and unexpected twist left me with my head spinning and asking myself, "What in the world is going on." I look forward to more thrillers by Vi Keeland!
Thank you to Atria Publishing via NetGalley for allowing me to read this ARC.
Wow is all that comes to my mind. I already loved all of Vi’ Keeland’s other books, but this one might be one of my new favorites. I’m currently on a psychological thriller reading binge, so The Unraveling was so worth the read.
I hope that Vi continues to write these thrillers, because I’m already looking for the next adventure.
ARC provided in exchange for an honest review.
I’m a little backlogged with my ARC’s but working diligently to get caught up. I really enjoyed the premise of this book! There were so many twists and turns it made my head spin and I love not knowing what’s going to happen next! You can’t get much better than a psychiatrist who really should be a patient instead of trying to help others! If you like psychological thrillers and mysteries, you should definitely try this book out!
3.5 stars. Fun and spicy thriller about a widowed psychiatrist who is absolutely falling apart and behaving in the most unprofessional ways possible as her obsession with a man who becomes her patient takes over her life. I felt like the ending was a bit anticlimactic with the way things had been escalating--I was expecting something a little more bonkers. But overall a very fun thriller, especially of like me, you love to read about women on the verge.
I was very underwhelmed. Nothing in this book excite me I fear. I could easily predict twists except 1. I couldn’t wait for it to be over
A multi-layered psychological thriller that will keep you entranced from page to page. Really enjoyed the twists and turns that this story took and the character development throughout this novel.
The book blurb desribes this as a "chilling, sizzling, and addictive thriller" which "follows a New York psychiatrist’s dark descent into dangerous obsession". And that's all I'm going to say. I recommend going into this without too much preconception.
Oh.My.God.! I've read some really good books lately but it's been a while since I came across one that grabbed me by the scruff of the neck and wouldn't let me go. I could've stayed up all night reading it but forced myself to read some of another book to get calmed down. I was on tenterhooks trying to figure out where the story was going and whether I was misinterpreting parts of it. Now this book isn't perfect by any stretch but I was totally immersed and entertained. The main characters are unlikeable and there are a couple of really steamy scenes that I could've done without but the suspense made up for it. As other reviewers have mentioned, Meredith (the psychiatrist) tends to overindulge in the wine and I found myself thirsting for a glass or two! I waffled between 4 and 5 stars but decided it deserved 5 stars from me.
My thanks to Atria Books via Netgalley for the opportunity to read an ARC of this novel and my apologies for missing the publication date. All opinions expressed are my own.
Publication Date: July 9, 2024
Wow! This book gripped me from the very beginning and I could not put tit down. Massive twists and turns in this book that will make your jaw drop!
Many thanks to Atria and Netgalley for an ARC!
This book started out slow but started to pick up steam a few chapters in. I loved the chemistry between Meredith and Gabriel. The pain that Meredith went through was moving and feeling that grief with her was a big part of the story. Hope to read more from Vi Keeland in the future!!!
