Special thank you to NetGalley, Vi Keeland, Atria Books for an ARC of this incredible psychological thriller. All I can really say is WOW! Such a chilling and unsettling story that keeps the reader engaged from start to finish. The ending was incredible and makes the reader re-think what they initially thought had occurred. I would highly recommend this book!
My FAVORITE book of 2024 so far! 5 freaking stars! (Bookstagram review link to come soon).
- Slow start (first 2 or 3 chapters didn't grab my attention because I felt confused by what happened to Mer
- I immediately fell in love with Gabriel's character. I was dying for them to get together and when they did I LOVED IT!
- The ending chapter featuring Gabriel's POV is one that I'm dying to talk with other readers about. Did he ask Rebecca to kill his family? Or just scare Meredith? Both?!
They tell me that Vi Keeland is best known for her romance novels. I'm not a romance fan but I can see where people would get into her romance-- it's sexy! The novel was twisty and fun, if not particularly memorable. And yes! It was also kinda hot!
WOW! This story was a rollercoaster of an adventure. We follow Meredith’s journey of grief through a timeline of past & present. Her life intersects with Gabriel in a most unexpected way. The tension in this book was so delicious - I could not stop reading. And the twist at the end was the cherry on top.
The Unraveling was perfectly paced and I was on the edge of my seat following the characters navigate their emotional entanglements. I loved that Keeland made the reader a voyeur in therapy sessions throughout the book, the information learned in these sessions felt forbidden. The Unraveling was twisted and addictive, I sincerely enjoyed it. Vi Keeland needs to write more thrillers STAT!!
Thank you to Atria, Emily Bestler Books, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this ARC!
The main character Meredith is unlikeable. I liked Gabriel's poverty in the end. I find it hard to believe there were no cameras really. The last few pages did shock me a bit. The story is OK and if you like psychological thrillers read this. No it's not the best, but try it out.
This was okay, not great. I wanted to keep reading and find out what happened, I wasn't quite sure where it was going but the ending left me a bit confused? A decent "debut" thriller (I know she's written lots of romance) but not especially memorable IMO. It did the job for a quick read though. 3.5 stars

5 stars! Thank you for allowing me to read your book!
4.5 stars rounded up
I devoured this and couldn’t put it down. Suspenseful and twisty, full of obsession and stalking, an absolute page turner! The main character was a complete mess and I couldn’t get enough. And about that plot twist? Excuse me while I’m still picking my jaw up off the floor. This was a face paced thriller and one of the best thrillers I’ve read this year.
OHH MY GOSH!!!!!!! Y'all, the gasp I just gasped at the end of this book has my head spinning. JUST WOW!!
I love a good psychological thriller. What makes this one top tier? The main character is a psychiatrist.
Meredith's world is turned upside down when her husband, a famous hockey player, kills a mother and daughter while driving drunk, also killing himself. Meredith has known about his substance abuse of pain killers and alcohol ever since his injury on the ice a few months prior.. Turning a blind eye to keep peace between angry husband, she now carries the guilt of that family's deaths and holds herself accountable for not stepping in to confront her husband about his addictions.
Gabriel is the husband and father of the two that were killed during the accident, and Meredith has seen him around town with women and casually smiling and living his life. Not able to understand how he can be happy without his wife and daughter, Meredith starts to follow Gabriel.
When Gabriel shows up at her office as a new patient, Meredith becomes obsessed and suspicious. Does Gabriel know she's the wife of the man who killed his family? Is he messing with her? Nothing is what it seems, especially with unreliable characters.
A rollercoaster of a novel, this was so fun to read and kept me turning the pages late at night. Thank you Net Galley and Atria\Emily Bestler Books for the arc.
Dr. Meredith McCall, a psychiatrist in New York, is unraveling after the death of her husband and the tragedy surrounding his choices. Doing her best to move on and return to normalcy, she runs into Gabriel Wright, a man connected to the tragedy, and a new obsession begins. Vi Keeland's psychological thriller is addicting, suspenseful, and full of plot twists.
Meredith is going through it. It's almost been two years since her husband lost his life in a car accident which also led to the deaths of two bystanders, a mom and her daughter. Although her husband was the one behind the wheel, she blames herself. He was struggling with prescription opioids after an injury and unbeknownst to her he stole her prescription pad. For this, her license to practice is suspended. The chapters are written in then and now, so you get to see her past and how it affected her present life.
Two years after her husband's death, she is carrying about her day and sees Gabriel Wright, the man who lost his wife and daughter in the accident. He is smiling and laughing and she wants to know how he does it. She knows everyone's grieving process is different, but how could he have gotten over it so quickly? That piques her interest and becomes curious. So, she begins to start a new routine which is centered around Gabriel. She may call it research while others say it's stalking. She opens up in her own sessions with a psychiatrist and he recommends she stop and start a new routine, but then the unthinkable happens; Gabriel walks into her office as a new patient. Is it a coincidence? It has to be..because what else could it possibly be?
I found myself so absorbed in the writing and story. I began reading it right before bed and told myself to stop..and that didn't last long. I fell asleep, woke up in the middle of the night, and continued to read it until I finished it early in the morning. My eyebags were worth it ;). I have always read Vi Keeland and her romance stories and while this did have a romantic aspect I think this book solidified her writing prowess; she could write in any genre of her choosing and I think I'd enjoy it. Honestly, I don't read as many psychological thrillers as I would like, but now I want to pick up some more. The Unraveling is a must-read that will grab your attention, give you chills, but keep you coming back for more.
Uh.. hello?! Why is no one talking about this book?!
My mind is still in shambles after reading this story.
I have so many WTF moments as I was reading the last few chapters.
The jaw-dropping twist was so unexpected that I had to re-read a whole chapter.
I didn't expect that at all.
My mind was utterly stunned when all the revelations began to make sense.
This is my first time reading a thriller story from Vi Keeland, and I'm surprised. I have been reading her books way way back many years ago, and everything was romance, so for her to write this kind of story,
It didn't disappoint me at all.
I hope she writes more books with this kind of genre.
If you're into the crime/thriller genre with stalking and surprising twists and turns, then this book is 100% perfect for you.
I highly recommend this one.
You won't regret it!
Both therapists and their patients may well be blown away by this thriller. It poses questions about the boundaries in relationships between these two parties. The pages turn as readers hold their breath to see what will happen next.
Those who like twisty stories and who are okay with some darkness may want to give this one a look.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Atria Books for this title. All opinions are my own.
A remarkable thriller debut from a romance author. A little sexy, a lot addictive and more twisty than expected.
The Unraveling is psychological thriller at its best. It was gripping and unputdownable. I though I knew exactly where it was going, but the author had some delight surprising twists that caught me off guard.
One of those reads that you’ve got to finish in one go. Like the story, you get obsessed - you do want to know where it’s going, how it will end.
Meredith a psychiatrist, is trying to recover from a terrible trauma in her life. She knows she is drifting and that her life is a camouflage for what her actual feelings are. Coming into contact with the husband of the victim of the car crash which also killed her own husband, gives Meredith the focus that was lacking for so long. The story starts from there, with many, many layers added on as the story progresses.
In a twisted case of being the stalker and then being stalked, the story unravels slowly in alternate angles
In a scenario where you the reader thinks you’ve got the story figured out Keeland throws another story into the mix and momentarily you feel that you are on the correct track to sort this story. You are wrong right to the end.
Complicated, twisted and very good reading, one needs a break from psychological thrillers after this one (for a bit anyway).
This book has the perfect title! I could feel the characters’ lives unraveling as they dealt with their grief. As the story developed and the suspense built, I found myself thinking ahead to what I expected to happen, but the twists in the plot caught me! Such a good read!
Already being a huge fan of this authors romance books I of course had to try out her first thriller! And to say I was happily surprised is an understatement. The story is interesting and has enough twists and turns to keep you guessing. The ending left me a bit unsure of what I had just read in the best way. So if you like an ending that makes you wonder… what now? This book is for you!
Thank you #NetGalley and #AtriaBooks for the chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is my first book by Vi Keenland and it certainly won’t be my last! I ended up buying a copy of this for my physical bookshelf.
Here are the things that I enjoyed most:
- The dual timelines- perfectly executed (and that’s not easy to do!)
- The fast pace without losing sight of the key plot - I was reading at breakneck speeds because I was desperate to see how it ended
- All of the secrets with a touch of spice (well done!)
I am eagerly awaiting the next read! Happy reading!
Thank you to Atria and NetGalley for the e-ARC.
There were surprises in this book that I was not even aware to look for. It left me guessing and doubting everything. The plot was intriguing, intense, and well-developed. I enjoy reading romance novels the most since I love good love stories. I do, however, like to occasionally venture outside of my comfort zone, and reading The Unraveling was absolutely one of those times. The author's rollercoaster journey held my attention from beginning to end.
If you want a spicy, stalker, psychological thriller this it. I read this book in 2 quick sittings I could not put it down. I never knew what was coming next and the book was full of tension. I’d recommend this to anyone..
