Bravo to Vi Keeland for this being her first thriller book! It was freakin’ unhinged in the best way. Psychological thrillers are one of my favorites and this story was full of unreliable characters. Once I hit 50%, I had to finish it that night because I couldn’t put it down. The ending truly did make my jaw drop. (Also 🌶️: there was a tiny bit of spice in the latter half)
The Unraveling published on 7/9/24 but a huge thank you to @atriabooks for sending me an ARC of this! I loved it!
What a suspenseful ride! Vi Keeland's The Unraveling takes the first person view of psychiatrist Meredith as she works through a tragic loss, when she meets Gabriel Wright, who is also connected in loss. Creepy vibes, moral and ethically gray moments. Who is innocent? Who has ill intent? I was on the edge of my seat the whole time.
The Unraveling by Vi Keeland is a psychological thriller novel. The story in The Unraveling is one that does switch from the present timeline to the past with more of the story coming in the present as the book goes on. One thing I would also mention is the author is known for romance with this being her first thriller and there is some erotic content that sort of crosses over to a dark romance feel in a few parts.
Meredith McCall was once a very successful psychiatrist in New York City where she was married to a pro-hockey player, Connor. When Connor was injured their marriage got rocky and one night the police are at the door instead of Connor, you see he was involved in an accident and died on the scene.
After that night Meredith’s life unraveled as she dealt with the aftermath of what happened which spiraled into losing her practice for a year. Now that Meredith is back on the job though she finds herself unable to say no to taking on a new patient who has ties to her past regardless of it breaking every rule.
The Unraveling by Vi Keeland for me kind of felt like one of those books that in order to enjoy it you should probably suspend some disbelief as the story goes on. After questioning the main character I just went with the flow and did find the pages turning faster as the twists and turns began to come along and I did find them entertaining and addictive which I enjoy in a psychological thriller. Overall I’d give this one three and a half stars and would give the author another try in this genre.
I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.
This story was a total and complete unraveling. I should have gotten the hint from the title but I was so immersed in the story that I kept on rooting for goodluck.
Some thrillers start with stalkers and this is one of them. This stalker rationalises her stalking till she realises what she has become. Fortunately, she stops just in time. However, fate (more like the orchestration of the stalked), brings them together and they unravel.
If anything, I learnt that not many incidents in life are accidents.
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC of this book. This thriller was so twisted and twisty - the epilogue really was a doozy. This is an easy read & engrossing psychological thriller, not the best writing ever, but still a fun one.
Wow! My mind is fried and this book was....wow!
I've read a lot of Vi Keelands books but this genre is new. Man! I remember when I read her ' The Rivals' , hands down one of the best books by her! Dare I say the book which started my enemies to lovers addiction?
Anyways Vi has proved she can write this genre too! It's best you go in blind. This book pulls you in from page 1 , not wanting to be put down and I loved it. I will say though that the ending was.... unsatisfactory? But I think that's the romantic in me talking? If you're a thriller lover, this book is totally for you! The ending was...wow!
Meredith McCall is a psychiatrist in New York with the perfect life. Her husband is a professional hockey player and her practice is thriving, but when an injury takes him out of the rink, Meredith's husband spirals out of control culminating in a drunk driving accident that leaves two pedestrians dead, a mother and her young daughter. That was then.
Now, Meredith must rebuild her life, but when she sees the handsome, charismatic Gabriel Wright, the widow and grieving father, moving on with his life, she becomes obsessed. And when he shows up at her practice as a new patient, she can't resist learning more about this enigmatic man.
This was a page-turner, no doubt, but I struggled with characters that felt unbelievable and undeveloped. If you're looking for a sexually-charged thriller, this could be for you.
I was so excited to read this!!! I love a good mystery that will keep you guessing until the end.!! I highly recommend this book! This was a book that I couldn’t put down as soon as I picked it up! I have been a fan of Vi Keeland for a long time and in typical VI Keeland fashion, this book delivers. 💙💜
An obsessive psychiatrist who crosses the line stalking someone and is still allowed to practice was very distressing to me. She should have been reported by the psychiatrist she was seeing. However the last quarter of this book had such a jaw dropping twist that I felt sorry for Meredith. Definitely a book group discussion title. 3.5 stars
Meredith is a psychiatrist married to Connor a hockey player. When an injury sidelines him, his addiction to pain pills ends in tragedy for Meredith and the Wright family. A chance meeting, Meredith becomes obsessed with Gabriel Wright, she cannot understand how he is moving on. She’s compelled to follow him. Imagine her surprise when he becomes one of her patients. She’s walking a tight line between what is ethically right and wrong. In this thriller, the stalker becomes the stalked, we will find out about the accident, and did Gabriel know who Meredith is. This is a gripping, fast paced thriller.
Vi Keeland loves a dark psych thriller, and this is no exception. This book is something of a Dark-Psych-Morally Grey-Thriller-Romance. It's honestly a lot happening at once, but I'm not mad at it. Vi always does a good job with pacing, and the books are always enjoyable without being TOO much and requiring you to break your brain to read them. This is great for a weekend read, an escape.
This was fantastic!!!
The way the author has you feel uncomfortable was amazing!
This was a page turner and just keeps you saying “WTF” the whole time.
Really loved this thriller. I am a big fan of Vi Keeland's romance books and think she did a great job writing an intriguing suspenseful novel.
This book had me hooked from the beginning. I liked the way the chapters kept me wanting to know more after each one. A very wild ride to say the least. One of the better books I’ve read this year. Thanks to the publisher and netgally for the advanced copy.
Meredith, a therapist, is trying to get her life back together after a major loss. While feeling still adrift, she happens upon a stranger whose life has also been upended.
Meredith begins to follow him, wanting to know if he's faring better than she is. When he abruptly shows up in her office, she decides that she alone can help him move forward.
This was twisty and unpredictable, though you'll have to embrace the characters making some questionable and dreadful choices.
Thank you to Atria/Emily Bestler Books and NetGalley for an ARC of this novel in exchange for my honest review.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Atria Books for providing me with an eARC of The Unraveling in exchange for my honest review!
As someone who adores erotic thrillers, I'm happy to get plenty of those vibes from The Unraveling. Yes, it's marketed as a psychological thriller, but the psychosexual tension that grows within Meredith's tale and between her and Gabriel absolutely comes straight out of the erotic thriller. It fleshes out the story to create an emotionally resonant foundation that helps crucial parts of it hit harder. The plot is formulaic enough, but it does embark on some nice twists and turns towards the third act. Even the final chapter succeeds at throwing me for a loop.
Overall, I'm officially rating The Unraveling four out of five stars. I'm eager to check out more of Vi Keeland's work.
Dark, twisty and its got some spice. This story surprised me. Meredith as a psychologist really frustrated me. The story is a bit slow, at the start, building the story. But Meredith comes off as grieving a huge loss and attempting to keep her life together.
But her obsession with what her husband did and the family he affected is disturbing and wonderfully done. I felt unease as she followed different people around and made horrible therapist decisions. As the twists continued, my mouth dropped open.
The end was the ultimate twist and one that I didn't necessarily see coming - at least not from that angle. It a fast read, high entertainment, and does have some spicy parts. It's a good little story about obsession.
A huge thank you to the author and publisher for providing an e-ARC via Netgalley. This does not affect my opinion regarding the book.
I really enjoyed this thriller! I did not expect the twists and I had a hard time setting this book down! Thank you so much for the book!
3.5 stars for this novel by Vi Keeland!
Centered around psychiatrist Meredith McCall, this psychological thriller will keep you on your toes! Meredith's life is spiraling out of control and she has found her license revoked and needing to go to therapy as part of her sentencing. She becomes fixated on a man, Gabriel, who is closely related to her personal tragedy, and begins stalking him and more. This novel is a page turner for sure but the lack of ethics and implausibility of the conclusion drug the rating for this one down for me. Keeland is an established author, but this is her first foray into writing thrillers and I would like to see more from her in the future!

Wow. The promo card I received with this book says “WARNING - may cause a SEVERE book hangover” and it sure did. This book was fantastic.
I almost wish it didn’t end where it did because even though the ending was awesome I wasn’t ready to leave the convoluted world these people lived in. I needed more crazy!!! I found myself wanting more and more of these totally flawed characters. I literally finished this book in less than a day, it was 100% a compulsive read for me.
I mean this novel had everything I love in a book. It was smart, sexy and intriguing. The author even gave a little shoutout to YOU by Caroline Kepnes, which seems to have been part of the inspiration for this book. It has similarities to YOU but was totally unique from YOU because of some added spin. Honestly, now I want to go read YOU (thus far I’ve only watched the show).
I would love if the author continued this book into a series but it was so well done on its own too. Would make a great movie or show too.
One of my absolute favorite books this year. Atmospheric and chock full of crazy!!!
Well done. Highly recommend. Also why aren’t more people reading this one!?! It’s so good.
