Coming on July 9, 2024 is Vi Keeland’s latest novel The Unraveling, a psychological thriller about a women’s obsession. An obsession which could be dark and dangerous.
Meredith McCall is a psychiatrist in New York City. Due to a tragic event, she is left alone and kind of lost. One day she sees a man, someone who is connected to the tragedy she experienced and she begins to follow him with the intent of finding out how he is happy when she is a wreck. This turns into an obsession for Meredith. She tries to stop but then one day the man, Gabriel Wright shows up to her office as a patient seemingly unaware of their connection and her stalking.
Now, Meredith knows she cannot cross the line and treat him as a patient but she can’t stop herself and then everything starts unraveling.
The pacing of the novel is great. There are no big lulls in the story, it is packed with twists and turns. The character of Meredith really made me stop and think what I would do in that situation. Ms. Keeland writes in such a way that you can actually understand her obsession and the things she does and not think that her actions are totally preposterous.
I loved the fast pace of the novel and would recommend it for any thriller lovers. I thoroughly enjoyed it and thank Netgalley and Atria/Emily Bestler Books for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This was a fast paced, twisty thriller that kept the twists coming literally until the very end! I enjoyed this one!
This had an intriguing, edge-of-your-seat plot and it certainly kept me hooked until the last page. The author did an excellent job showing the slow unraveling of the main character.
The only thing that didn't quite fit were the last few pages. The very last page showed that a character did something for someone else that that just did not quite fit.
4.5 stars!
Thank you to Net Galley for providing this arc in exchange for an honest review.
Did I read this in one day? Yes, yes I did! (no regrets)
Summary: Psychiatrist Meredith is going through the motions as she deals with the death of her husband and its consequences. She feels the guilt weigh in on her. She happens to come across Gabriel who is also connected to the consequences of her husband's death. She finds it unbelievable that he is so "happy" and curiosity has her following him. Only, she starts to feel as though she's the one being watched. But by who?
Thoughts: I personally do not read or watch thrillers. It just isn't my genre. I love Vi Keeland's romance novels so I gave this one a shot. I am glad I did. I found myself sucked into the story right away. The thought process of Meredith, although frustrating, was simply intriguing. I did find much of the story to be predictable. There are lots of obvious clues. BUT the very last page had me with my jaw open. I didn't see that coming to that extent at all! What I also enjoyed about the story was how into detail it went into each character. From the downfall of her husband, her clients, her own therapist, and even the detective. I simply loved the character descriptions and how well everything tied in. Nothing felt like a filler.
Overall a fantastic read that I will still be pondering over!
**3.5 stars. I liked the pacing of this book a lot.. therapist thrillers are one of my favorite niche sub-genres. I was interested in the plot from start to finish..I SEMI saw the plot twist coming but I still enjoyed the book.
Great book! Kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time and I couldn't put it down! Thank you to Vi Keeland, Atria Books and NetGalley for the ARC copy of this read.
We follow the POV of Meredith, a therapist who recently suffered a tragedy when her husband, who was driving under the influence, died in an accident. There were more lives lost than just his in that accident. She becomes obsessed with Gabriel Wright, a man who is closely connected to the tragedy she suffered. She goes from stalking him to him coming in as a patient and crosses all moral, ethical, and professional lines. The POV is past and present, so the book can show you what leads up to everything that is happening.
I struggled with whether or not to rate this book 3 or 4 stars. I ultimately decided on 3 for a few reasons. The story was fast-paced and exciting, and the twists were unexpected (which is rare for me not to see things coming). However, I didn't end up feeling connected to the characters. They lacked depth and likeable qualities. Meredith is a smart woman who, I don't feel, would have gotten tangled up in this whole mess to begin with. Nothing in her backstory implies that she has previously made questionable decisions like this, so it just felt out of character for her. This book almost reads similar to YOU (if you know, you know). I could tell that this book was written by a romance author. There were some smutty parts (which I'm not opposed to as I read smut books), but it just felt out of place here.
I think this was a good debut thriller novel for this author. It felt a little bit more like a dark romance book than a typical thriller. A cat and mouse game with the roles reversing. I'm excited to see what she puts out in the future. The twists were unexpected, especially that very last one.
Ultimately, if you want a fast-paced dark romance thriller that you can zone out and easily get through, and you're able to suspend belief and don't care too much about character development, this is a good read.
Thank you Vi Keeland, Atria Books, and NetGalley for the ARC of this book.
4/5! 🌟 The Unraveling is a twisty addictive thriller about how psychiatrist Meredith bonds with one of her new patients over a traumatic loss, but that bond slowly turns into a deadly obsession with twists you don’t see coming!
I was hooked from the start! I loved Meredith as a MC and I loved the pace of this book. The twists were well placed and addictive, however, the ending seemed a little abrupt and I was left wanting a little more! The steamy romance aspect was unexpected but also so fun, and knowing now that the author is a romance author it makes sense. This was my first Vi Keeland novel I’ve read, but after this solid debut thriller I’m definitely interested to read more of her work!
Huge thank you to Atria Books, NetGalley, and author Vi Keeland for this advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review 🤍

This book was freaking wild! I literally didn’t see any of the twists coming. I mean a stalkery romantic thriller?! This book was perfection for me.
This was a pretty impressive thriller! I did not guess the ending and I was engaged the entire time. Definitely some plays on “you” which I didn’t love but the overall stalking vibe was different enough from “you” to still be really good.
Meredith was a well rounded fmc and while her decision making skills when it came to Gabriel were questionable in every possible way, I still completely enjoyed her.
Would definitely recommend.
Thank you to the publisher for the gifted arc
I think I need someone to help me pick my jaw up off the floor. Vi Keeland, PLEASE keep writing romantic suspense books. I could not put this book down. The twists and turns of this book kept my attention and I really didn't see anything coming.
Well, I can honestly say I've never gasped out loud at the end of a book!
Meredith faces a tragedy most people wouldn't survive as well as damage to her own reputation. Things get messy quickly and the twists and turns are so good! I have read Vi Keeland's romance books but this is totally not in that genre. Highly recommend!
I could not put the book down once I began reading it. Cannot wait for it to be released. I will recommend it to everyone.
Wow…this book certainly blew me away…I’m not even sure where to start!
I was never quite sure where things would turn next, but The Unraveling always took me by surprise and kept my eyes glued to the page. The plot had me hooked from virtually the first page and was so cleverly crafted that just as you started getting comfortable it’d turn all your assumptions upside down.
I was fascinated by the character of Meredith from the very beginning- her job, her relationship with the other characters ( Sarah, her brother, Graeme…), in a nutshell I wanted to know everything about her.
The now and then structure will keep your mind working even harder than usual.
I won’t tell you much about the story but i have read nearly all the books written by Vi Keeland , trust me when I say that this thriller is the evidence that whatever she writes, it will be worth reading ...
The ending is going to floor readers. Everyone is going to be talking about this.

I was looking forward to reading this ARC because we learned that this was the first time that Ms. Keeland was writing in the psychological thriller genre. I have enjoyed several of her books in the romance genre so I thought, "what the heck?"
Unfortunately, this was ALMOST a DNF for me. I can put up with a lot of things, but one of my biggest pet peeves is when we see a female MC whose behavior is consistently TSTL. And this FMC is like a car crash waiting to happen and it only goes from bad to worse.
Why is this a problem? Well, because the FMC is supposedly a professional woman in her late 20's - she is a Psychiatrist with a practice in New York City. Her rational decision-making skills are virtually non-existent, and it was almost like reading the inner thoughts of a pre-teen or teenager full of petulance and irrational thinking (really, you're going to hang up on your brother after telling him you don't want the $3.5 million dollar settlement that he has been fighting the insurance companies for you and you don't care what he does with it? After a very short, like 3 minute conversation? Then you don't take his phone calls after you hung up on him and he isn't exactly sure what to do?) Definitely some dissonance going on here and I almost threw in the towel.
The crazy thing is that SOMEHOW, even with the crazy behavior, once you get to the second half of the book, the pace actually picks up and the storyline somehow starts to save itself. There is a "twist" in the story, but it also felt like there was enough foreshadowing that it wasn't a big "gotcha" like I think the goal was.
So....I'm a bit torn. I thought I was going to hate it and I ended up thinking that it was okay. I'm sure that doesn't help, but I finished the book and just thought, "Huh...."
So, there you have it.
Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this ARC. The opinions above are mine and mine alone.
This psychological thriller is a short fast read. Its a story of grief and obsession. The story alternates between the past and the present Meredith slowly goes off the rails and the twist at the end was a surprise. This is a fun popcorn thriller with a little spice.
I received an ARC of this novel from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Yikes! The ending was unexpected. Everyone is a victim and a villain.
Quick, fast paced read and enjoyable suspense thriller. I did not feel as connected to the characters in this one and this took away some emotional impact of the plot itself. Recently I've read a few books where a final twist is revealed in the epilogue and I'm not sure how I feel about it. It happens in this book as well. I appreciate the shock value but then also feel cheated on more storyline!
I thought this was such an interesting story especially between the different characters and their relationships. It was definitely a slow burn but a good one all the same. I particularly liked the abuse of power storyline, but wished for one more chapter,. I feel like it ended just as it got to the best part.
