The Unraveling by Vi Keeland - well it unraveled me. This book is very intense & suspenseful- I loved that. This book kept me guessing right up to the end. This was a unique read- psychological thriller with a touch of spice- does it get any better? Definitely read this book~
Thank you NetGalley & Atria Books for the ARC copy of this book.
The Unraveling was so close to scratching my itch for a messy thriller with characters who make bad, bad choices.
The story centers around Meredith, a psychiatrist whose husband destroyed Gabriel's family. Gabriel does not know Meredith, so he does not recognize her when their paths cross a year after their shared tragedy. She recognizes him and is shocked that he seems happy when she feels so miserable. She grows obsessed and mildly stalkery for a couple of weeks, and then he shows up at her practice as a new patient. Of course, she knows it would be unethical to take him on, but she is dying to know how he is really doing.
The timeline alternates between the present and the days leading up to the tragedy. There are some twists and turns, especially at the end, but I didn't feel as invested in the characters to feel shocked by the events.
Thank you Atria Books and NetGalley for the ARC for my honest review.
Oh my goodness, this book! I honestly could not stop turning the pages from the moment I started. I had a compulsive need to know what was happening and how it would all work out. I have to admit, the conclusion fell a little flat to me, but this is still very much worth the read.
I truly hope Keeland continues to write in this genre.

After living through a tragedy, Meredith Mcalls life and mind literally being to unravel. She spirals into depression and using walking the city of New York as an outlet. Until she runs into a familiar face on the street, Gabriel Wright. He shares the same trauma as Meredith, yet he seems happy. She can’t understand how he could be happy when she is so miserable, so she begins to following him daily to see if she can uncover his mask or his secrets. As a psychiatrist, she knows stalking is not the legal or healthy response but she can’t stop herself. Only when her own psychiatrist tells her to stop, does she agree to back off and find a new routine. As she’s getting back into work, she gets a new patient, Gabriel Wright. Things quickly spin out of control as she throws caution and reason to the wind and makes morally and eithcally wrong decision after decision.
Meredith is a very unlikeable character. She makes every wrong decision and her life is literally unraveling with each page. I wanted to scream so many times for her to just STOP! Reading this was like watching a train wreck. However, it was so addicting and suspenseful! There is so much suspense and tension you could cut it with a knife. It’s a great popcorn thriller with a few spicy scenes thrown in. I wouldn’t have guessed this was a debut thriller novel from a romance author. I do feel like I missed an important part or there was a plot hole at the very end, but it didn’t take away from my overall opinion. Very good read and would recommend to anyone looking for a good suspenseful popcorn thriller. Thank you NetGalley, Atria Books and Vi Keeland for that ARC in exchange for my honest review.

A fun twisty-turny thriller that had me guessing all the way to the end….and just when you think things are all wrapped up…..they’re not!
Oh my! What did I just read!? Twisty and a little spicy! The last page was just, wow!
Thank you NetGalley and Atria Books for an advanced digital copy!

This book was riddled with red flags from the start to finish, for nearly every character. And yet I kill myself not being able to stop reading.
Meredith, suffering, a tragic loss, and returning to psychiatry office after a year, she finds herself treating Gabriel, who shares in her tragedy. After falling for him.
Well, I would be screaming at the top of my lungs if this was written in reality, I definitely enjoyed the ride while reading. Lots of nice little twists and turns.
I can’t stop thinking about this one! For fans of psychological thrillers. Told in split story of them and now. Then Meredith and Connor, a psychiatrist and her hockey player husband, happy and ready to start their family. Now, Meredith is in danger of losing her medical license and Connor is gone after a horrible tragedy.
There’s so many twists and turns and layers to this book that I don’t know what to say because I don’t want to give anything away. You may think you know what’s going to happen…and you may get a thing or two right… I did. But you don’t know it all. I didn’t know until the very last sentence of the book. That’s how good it is!
After the initial pages, I found myself not connecting with the story or characters, so I decided to pass on this book. Did not finish
First I love this authors writing. I’ve read and enjoyed so many of her books. This book fell short though. I found it predictable and even the end was supposed to be a twist but I found it lack luster.
New York City psychiatrist Meredith McCall’s life is in turmoil. Her husband dies in a car accident after being charged with the death of a woman and her small child. The tragedy and loss become too much for her.
She soon becomes involved with the man who had a link to her husband’s tragic circumstances. When he seeks psychiatric help from her, she has a big decision to make. Slowly, her life is unraveling. If she treats him, she will cross all ethical and moral bounds and lose her practice license.
This riveting thriller will keep you on the edge of your seat! It's a definite must-read.
There is no love story here. There is no permanent happily ever after. There is, however, a lot of top tier suspense.
The main theme of this book is Meredith and Gabriel's declining mental health after a car crash changed the course of their lives. As Gabriel chooses Meredith to be his therapist, their mutual attraction makes the plot complicated and all the more interesting to read. Gabriel's reaction or the lack thereof, to the fact that her husband is responsible for the death of his family, causes Meredith to become increasingly paranoid of the doctor patient relationship between them. She stalks him, repeatedly, searching for answers, and she's absolutely sure that he is stalking her as well.
The author has done a fine job with the plot twists and storytelling. It is an unconventional story, definitely a low key thriller with the following tropes -
▪️ Instalust
▪️ Forbidden lust
▪️ Widow/widower
▪️ Mental health
▪️ Stalker
▪️ Suspense
▪️ No HEA
Author Vi Keeland has a new book - say no more; I'm all in.
Following a tragedy that has upended both her personal and professional life, Dr. Meredith McCall lives a despondent existence, oscillating between grief and guilt. A chance encounter with Gabriel Wright, a fellow victim of the same tragedy, who has since then, seemingly, moved on in life, piques her curiosity. She sets out on a path of redemption, that slinks to obsession, blurring the lines of propreity and professional ethics to downright stalkery and duplicity.
An ardent fan of Vi Keeland's romance novels, it took me a while to warm up to her latest work. The plot build-up was at a slow pace which helped to set the obsessive tone of the protagonist. Though it dragged a bit in the middle, the reader is taken through the gradual 'unraveling' of Meredith's emotions - from remorse and regret to empathy and curiosity until it reaches a frantic obsession. The climax was jaw-dropping and the denoument was the clincher that proved Keeland's mastery at story-telling, regardless of the genre.
The 'roaming-in-a-drunken-stupor' FMC is one that I am not particularly fond of, though here Meredith is quick to clean up her act and take responsibility for her actions. The elaborately described intimate scenes didn't do much for the plot other than serving as a nod to the author's previous works. In that context, Gabriel's meet-cute with his late wife also seems to be inspired from one of Keeland's earlier romances (Summer Proposal, I think?).
Overall, a gripping suspense novel. Despite the transition in genres, the author's writing is just as engaging. Thanks to Netgalley and Atria books for providing a digital copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
I finished The Unraveling by Vi Keeland in just 1 day. UnPUTDOWNABLE! I loved the “You” vibes it gave off, even the reference.
Meredith is consumed with grief and guilt when she sees the man whose life her husband destroyed. She begins to follow him but what starts out as innocent turns into a deathly game of cat and mouse
Holy psychological unraveling indeed, Batman! 🤯
I loved the tone of this narrative! Toying with both first and second person POV, past and present tense, this was my kind of psych thriller! It was fast-paced with steam that truly fit the storyline (and might I add, was well done). Keeland comes from romance, but it’s safe to say she has a talent for blending genres too, and I’m all for it.
Many thanks to NetGalley, Simon & Schuster, Atria/Emily Bestler Books for the digital ARC to read and review!
No no no. Just too graphic. I couldn’t… I’m sorry. I requested because I saw a bookstagrammer I trust recommend it but did not realize all this entails. Maybe I should have known better before requesting?
Thank you to Atria and NetGalley for my ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I have only read one other book by this author and loved it. I know this is her first thriller and while I felt it was rather lackluster, I would still give another one a chance.
The story alternates present and past in Meredith's POV. It did draw me in by wanting to know, not only what happened to her husband, but why she feels the way she does about him but it felt slow throughout. There was a theme in the beginning that was very similar to a popular series, which was eventually referenced in this book, but I found it to be rather off-putting and unoriginal. Being a medical professional, it was challenging to read how unprofessional this character, a psychiatrist, was. The overall story felt slow moving and the ending felt like it was rushed to wrap everything up.
I can certainly see why this book is getting such good reviews, but I unfortunately found it to be fairly predictable. Our main character, Dr. Meredith McCall, has questionable behavior when it comes to her job as a psychiatrist and crosses many boundaries in the process. There were instances where I just wanted to scream at her to do the opposite of what she was doing.
That said, it was an easy, entertaining read that I know will appeal to many.

I was hooked from the very beginning. The storytelling had me locked in and I need to know what was going to happen between Meredith and Gabriel. I was not disappointed.
