This is a first for Vi Keeland, stepping into writing a psychological thriller, and it did not disappoint. Some of the twists were expected but the ending was a perfect, chaotic twist that left me jaw dropped and hanging. I wanted more.
To me, it did not seem slow paced as others have mentioned. I read the book in about 2 days (due to work), but I could’ve devoured it in one sitting. It’s the perfect length, with a gripping start, a powerful backstory and a twisty conclusion.
Meredith, a psychologist and recent widow, is guilt ridden by an accident her husband caused. She begins following the widower of the family her husband accidentally killed, trying to gauge if he had a happy ending to relieve her guilt, but ends up being stalked herself.
When the widower, Gabriel, arrives at Meredith’s practice one day after seeing an ad that she’s accepting new patients, against her better judgement she takes him on. There’s tension between the two and Meredith is reluctant to keep the provider-patient relationship due to her already being given a second chance by the Medical Board. She knows it’s wrong, but she can’t help but keep him close. But someone is keeping her close, too…
Overall, I really enjoyed this read. People have criticized Meredith as a character due to some unprofessional decisions—but grief sometimes knows no bounds and she’s human like everyone else. I see her as compelling and humanizing, entwined with guilt-fueled rash decisions, that lead her character through ups and downs and psychologically thrilling twists.
Thank you to NetGalley and Atria Books—Simon & Schuster for sending me an eARC to read and review.
I absolutely loved this book! I finished it in one sitting! It had me hooked from the very first page! I personally favor Vi Keeland so once I seen this book I had to request it! This book definitely did not disappoint, it’s definitely one of my top reads this year! I would even compare this psychological thriller to some of Freida McFaddens books, I mean the ending had my jaw on the floor and I didn’t see it coming, which I LOVE!
The Unraveling by Vi Keeland is the story of Meredith, who has recently lost her husband and the aftermath of his death.
This is a different genre than the author usually writes, as this is a thriller. The story can be read as a stand-alone and reverts from present to past, as the author weaves us through the trajectory of their lives.
Meredith is dealing with grief and guilt and struggles on a daily basis to keep going, until she runs into someone from her tragic past. Although she understands that her contact with this individual may ruin her career, she can’t give it up.
It’s best to go in blind with this book, as it is a real shocker at the end. I asked myself, “What did I just read?” It definitely has you on the edge of your seat from page one.
This is a 4.5 star review for me. Thank you to Atria, Vi Keeland and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an advanced copy. I look forward to Ms. Keeland’s next release.
This book has the "YOU" stalker vibe. Loved it and omg!!!! that ending could that had been any better, there are some aex scenes included in case that isn't for your reading tastes. But I throughly enjoyed this book from the very first page. Great characters, just a fantastic storyline.
Thanks to the author, the publisher and Netgalley for an early release of this book.
First, thank you Atria for allowing me to read this book early. This is my first time reading Vi’s work. This book has the potential to be a bestselling book, but with some changes. I love how engaging The Unraveling began. It will grab you and keep your attention, but towards the middle of the book it took a big turn into some extremely graphic moments. Had these moments not been as graphic as they were I think I’d have enjoyed the book more. I will say that the plot is brilliant it just needs a little more work.
This book was so good! I cannot put into words how much I enjoyed this book. It has a mystery, forbidden love, spice, creepy vibes and so much more. It was such a great mix of elements that kept me wanting to read more. It’s fast paced and so entertaining. I’ve never read a book from this author and I cannot wait to read more. This is her first thriller and it was amazing. If there is one book I could recommend to pick up next it would be this one. I also think this would be a great first thriller for those that mostly read romance. This is a top read of the year!
3 stars! Oh Meredith, you morally grey gal you. Vi Keeland's THE UNRAVELING is a very quick and very digestible read for those new to the thriller genre. That said, I found it to be incredibly predictable and sadly could decipher all of the "twists" and "turns" miles before they actually happened. I just don't think I vibed with this one, but thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC for an honest review!
This thriller revolves around not only obsession, but also deception - two partners in crime that make for an engrossing, suspenseful ride.
The question is posed several times during the novel - what is ethical, and ethical boundaries are certainly crossed. I feel that fans of Freida McFadden and also fans of Colleen Hoover's, Verity, would love this book.
We learn that appearances are definitely deceiving. Be sure to read all the way to the end to be rewarded with yet one more additional, nice twist.
Thank you, Netflix and Atrial/Emily Bestler Books, for this engaging ARC.
Despite an engaging start, I ultimately found this book lacking, which is why I'm giving it two stars. While the initial chapters held promise and seemed engaging, the narrative faltered as it progressed. The writing lacked the necessary depth, and the protagonist was portrayed as an incredibly incompetent psychiatrist, rendering her character implausible and the story, at times, uncomfortable to engage with. Rather than embodying the maturity and insight expected of a professional in her field, she read more like a caricature, with her inner monologue resembling that of a teenager rather than a mature woman. Additionally, the inclusion of explicit scenes felt unnecessary and consumed a significant amount of the book's middle portion, as well as detracted from the overall coherence of the plot.
Moreover, the much-anticipated twist everyone is talking about unfortunately lacked surprise for me, as it was glaringly predictable from the start. It felt as though the path to the climax had been laid out too plainly, diminishing the satisfaction of reaching the conclusion. A more nuanced twist or the introduction of additional characters could have greatly improved the overall experience.
Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you for the opportunity to preview The Unraveling. This is a good read. The story goes back in the NOW and THEN.
The novel doesn’t reveal everything at once. It’s like an onion and each chapter tells another but if information.
A doctor loses her hisband to a car accident where a woman and child is killed. Her husband is a famous athlete. You learn she herself has become part of the investigation.
With each turn of the page you follow her as she becomes obsessed with the husband of the victims. She starts to follow and stalk him. But soon the tables turn and she thinks she is being stalked.
This is fast paced and got under my skin with each page. A good one! 3.5 atars
I was so excited when Vi announced that she was writing a thriller. I was even more excited as I read this book. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time I was reading. Vi did an excellent job of throwing twists and turns into this story. I really never knew what was coming next! I finished it yesterday and I can't stop thinking about it! I will definitely be reading this book again in the future. And please Vi, I hope there are lots more thrillers in your writing future.
I absolutely loved this - some mystery, part stalker story, a little romance: perfection!
We meet Meredith, who is a psychologist forced to go to therapy after her license to practice is suspended. Her husband had killed a woman and her daughter while he was drunk driving. We then get to meet Gabriel, the husband of the woman who died. Meredith sees Gabriel smiling and can’t imagine that he could possibly be happy. So, she begins to follow him.
I loved how this tale unfolded…. New twists were everywhere! The pace was excellent, and the writing was descriptive and compelling.
Thank you so much to @netgalley for allowing me to review The Unraveling by Vi Keeland. I was so impressed by her first thriller after knowing her for romance. Thoughts and opinions are my own.
This was an extremely binge-able read!! My first book by this author and I loved it. That ending?????? Four stars! Thank you to NetGalley and Atria / Emily Bestler Books for the ARC!!!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC of The Unraveling! I think this was a good thriller for people who don't read that many thrillers. It is easy to read, easy to follow. I love a morally gray character too, and Meredith certainly crossed some boundaries. My only issue with The Unraveling was just how predictable it was. I was baffled around the 80% mark as things start to arise because the main character just didn't see coming. Even the twists dropped right at the end were pretty easy to see coming. It made it difficult for me to want to keep reading because I felt like I knew was coming. Even so, this will definitely be someone's cup of tea!
I have read Vi keel and romance books and loved them do when I heard doing a thriller I was excited and let me tell you it did not disappoint it’s a web of grief, obsession and sex twist and turns you don’t see coming especially the ending! It’s a must read
I have read most of Vi Keeland books. As soon as I hear she has a new one coming out I order it. This book is very different from her usual romance novels. It is more of a psychological thriller, and I can’t wait for her to write more of them.
Thank you, NetGalley and the publisher for a digital copy of this book for my honest opinion
Thank you to Atria books for the early copy!
The Unraveling follows the story of a psychiatrist who becomes obsessed with one of her patients whom she has a tragic connection with. One of the positives of the book was the writing that hooked me right in. But that's about it. I know this is a psychological thriller but the slow pace didn't really do it for me. The story is majorly told in an alternative then and now timeline which I usually like. The plot was fairly straightforward with a plot twist that I could see from a mile away. Overall, the twists and the overall plot wasn't as interesting as I expected.
This was a little slow for me but still included some fun twists. The characters were well developed and it was really tense throughout. I didn’t love the unnecessary spice, so if it wasn’t for that I would have rated it higher. I can see this being a popular thriller for the summer!
Wow! I have found a new author to read! This one hooked at the start. It is one twisted ride, and I absolutely loved every minute of it. The characters and dialog are vrry real. Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to read this boom.
well this was a lot of fun. I read it in one sitting. it's really not high literature and I kind of thought it was going to go crazier than it did (I'm also still... not sure what the last-minute twist was implying??), but yeah, a lot of fun. gonna be a great beach read.
