"The Unraveling" by Vi Keeland is a fast-paced, riveting novel that kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. This book is a quick read, perfect for a weekend getaway or a few evenings curled up on the couch. Keeland masterfully crafts a story filled with unreliable characters who each bring their own unique and twisted perspective to the plot. The layers of deceit and mystery kept me guessing until the very end.
One of the most compelling aspects of this novel is how deeply flawed and complex the characters are. Without giving away any spoilers, let's just say they all have significant issues and could seriously benefit from some therapy sessions. This added a rich, psychological depth to the narrative that I found both intriguing and unsettling.
Overall, "The Unraveling" is a captivating read that will leave you questioning everyone's motives. If you enjoy psychological thrillers with a fast-moving plot and a cast of characters you love to hate, this book is definitely for you. Four stars!
This story strikes my favorite balance of characters making decisions that have your jaw on the floor yet you absolutely cannot look away. Meredith McCall is a therapist whose life is falling apart when a patient she recognizes comes in the door. She has a complicated history with this patient, and knows she shouldn't continue to see him, but instead it is just the beginning. That is all I want to say -- I think its best to go in blind to this one and enjoy the ride!
WOW. I can't recommend this book highly enough. What a fantastic read.
The Unraveling is exactly the type of thriller I love. It was full of suspense, drama, twists, and a little bit of spice.
I loved Meredith, she was a great main character. She was strong, troubled, charismatic, and complex. Gabriel was a very interesting character too.
It's a real page turner, I was hooked immediately, I read it in one sitting. I neglected everything else just to finish it, I needed to know what happened. I thought it might have been ending on a bit of a flat note, but then that final twist. Wow!
Vi Keeland needs to keep writing books like this, I absolutely LOVED it. This is the first book I've read from her, and it definitely won't be the last. I'll be looking up her previous books after this.
I very highly recommend.
5 well deserved stars from me. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thanks to Netgalley, Atria Books, and Vi Keeland for the chance to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
For fans of books like "Haunting Adeline," this is definitely up the same alley. We love a "morally gray" character that is doing wrong, but we can see why they are doing them. Think Joe Goldberg, as we root for him when we know he's wrong, except this time it's a woman therapist and we are rooting for her all the same because the story is just that good, even if it's wrong.
WHAT did i just read?! The Unraveling is not a book I would normally find myself reading but I can honestly say that I was HOOKED. The mystery had me at the edge of my seat and it’s safe to say this one made me want to read many more just like it!
I always love a book that keeps me guessing and this is a book that did that very thing and did it very well. I had no idea what was coming and was completely shocked at how it all turned out. Oh how I love when that happens.
The storyline felt so original to me and the characters were well written. I definitely felt like I knew the main character, her thoughts and feelings worked their way into my brain and made me feel as confused and anxious as she did. Good and bad!
I definitely recommend this book to lovers of suspense and mystery. I enjoyed this one very much.
I received an advanced readers copy of this book from Netgalley. All opinions are my own
I realize some people might enjoy this one, but it wasn't for me. The book took itself way too seriously as a psychological thriller, and it almost felt like there was a "wink-wink/nudge-nudge" kind of tone going on throughout. When I had about 90 pages to go, I started skimming just to see where everything would end up. I found the big plot twists only partially believable, and I found it almost completely unbelievable that Meredith would be able to pull herself out of a downward spiral into alcoholism so quickly. I'm sure people have done it in real life, but the narration spent so long describing in such lengthy detail how much wine she drank and how bad things got that the bounce back up out of her dark place felt a little forced and almost trite. And the full-circle device used with the storytelling didn't work for me either.
Also, Meredith addresses Connor directly a lot in the story, but there are times where she also refers to him in the third person, and sometimes she did both on the same page. It was confusing; was that part of the unraveling she experienced? Or was it a choice in storytelling by the author? At the very least, it was distracting and kept making me wonder whether the book was going to end with us finding out the entire thing was a series of journal entries or something. That's not what happened, which made the repeated, "I can't get over *you*"-type comments even more baffling. Who was Meredith talking to? And why would she refer to Connor in the third person within paragraphs of talking to him directly?
Like I said, not the book for me, although I'm sure others will probably enjoy it (or have this summer.)
This is a great thriller. It revolves around some serious obsessions. So many twists and turns. This is definitely a fun read.
Solid psychological thriller about a psychiatrist who becomes obsessed with a man she should have nothing to do with ... for many reasons. Great tension and twists. Definitely a hard one to put down!
When Meredith McCall’s famous hockey star husband sustains a serious injury while playing he soon becomes addicted to his pain medication. Meredith lives in a state of denial of who her husband Connor has now become. Ironic since she is a psychiatrist, however this allows for a series of tragic events that will end up altering her life forever.
When Connor steals Meredith’s prescription pad to sustain his addiction he finds himself not only dead due to his reckless actions but also responsible for running over a mother and her child killing them as well.
Meredith is having a difficult time adjusting to her new life as a widow, and now being held responsible for her negligence. But when she sees Gabriel Wright, the father of Connor’s victims on the street, she has no control over her own actions or thoughts. She must follow him, she must know how he is doing. And now seemingly unbeknownst to Gabriel he has come to Meredith for psychiatric care unaware of who she truly is.
Overall rating 3/5
The amount of denial, and unprofessionalism exhibited by Meredith is unbelievable. How can she truly be so unaware or bury her head in the sand in regards to Connor’s behavior let alone her own. A psychiatrist who openly stalks, and takes advantage of her patient/victim is so volatile. I did not like this character, but maybe that is the way Keeland wanted the reader to see the MC. I do wish the storyline moved faster or added another POV. I do like that there was a happy ending of sorts and feel that this whole story represents unhealthy relationships, but maybe at only a surface level.
*Thank you to Vi Keeland, Atria Books and Netgalley for the ARC copy. I am freely leaving my honest review.
I was more than a little intrigued to read a thriller by Vi Keeland. Having read her romance novels before, I was curious to see where she was going to take this story. I am not going to get into great detail in this review because I certainly don’t want to spoil it for any readers. You definitely want to experience this novel for yourself.
Meredith had experienced a great loss, and she was still reeling and trying to pick up the pieces of her life. While her life feels as though it’s in limbo, she sees the man whose life had also been affected by the same event. He was smiling. She couldn’t fathom how he could look happy again. Even with the passage of time, she still felt untethered, but this man looked like he was healing and moving forward with his life. Meredith needed to see what his life had become, how he was going on, and it became her daily mission to see him and get a glimpse into his life.
When Gabriel Wright walks into her psychiatry office for an appointment one day, Meredith is shocked to see the man that she has been obsessing over right in front of her. She knows that treating him as a patient is every kind of wrong and unethical, but she is intrigued by this man, and wants to know more about him, even if she is nervous that he will make the connection with who she really is.
What a tangled web! That is what I want in a book of this genre. I didn’t trust anyone. My curiosity and suspicions were on high alert, and I couldn't wait to see how the author was going to twist this story. Yes, this author certainly knows how to write an intense thriller. The Unraveling was quite the ride.
*4.5 Stars
The Unraveling by Vi Keeland – 3.5 stars
This was a gripping psychological thriller with a slow burn of obsession. Meredith, a psychiatrist dealing with her own tragic past, becomes entangled with Gabriel, a man tied to her trauma. When he unknowingly walks into her office as a patient, the line between personal and professional blurs.
Vi Keeland’s debut thriller is addictive, though I found parts of the plot predictable. It’s dark and twisted, with enough suspense to keep me hooked, but the ending left me questioning everything I thought I knew. Worth a read if you love morally grey characters!
Special thanks to Atria books and NetGalley for the ARC of this book.
I really liked this one and had me turning the pages to find out what was going to happen.
This book is about a psychiatrist who is married to a handsome hockey player until tragedy strikes and she loses him and the tragedy involved another family lost and damaged.
One day she sees Gabriel Wright who was the other family in this tragic accident who lost his family too. While she's in a big rut, she sees him and he's smiling. Then, he becomes her patient. Although it's unethical and she should NOT treat him, she becomes obsessed with him, and can't figure out why he's happy. He of course does not recognize her, or does he and we find out just who is playing who here! A solid 4 stars!
I did not like this. I was not a fan of the obsession aspect and think there are books out there that do it better and make it less irritating. I felt like I needed to give the main character a stern talking to throughout the book and that’s bit really why I read. I say skip it.
This book is the perfect cure for any reading slump! It’s intense, emotional, and twisted in all the right ways. I was instantly drawn to Meredith’s world of duplicity and risk. The plot is original and unpredictable. The conclusion was a shock, especially the final jaw-dropping sentence. Thank you, NetGalley and Atria Books for my copy. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I really enjoyed this book! I went in to this not knowing much about the author or the story and ended up tearing through until the end. A New York City psychiatrist, Dr. Meredith McCall, suffers a traumatic loss and feels adrift in life. When she bumps into a man she has a tragic connection with, Gabriel Wright, it sparks an unhealthy obsession that leads her down a dark path.
Oh my god this story was absolutely unhinged. I couldn't believe how crazy every character in this story is. So many fun twists and turns.

Thank you Atria Books for my copy. Apparently, this is the author’s debut thriller book and is mostly known for writing romance books. I always love when authors come out with books outside of their usual genre.

Meredith goes through grief and comes across Gabriel. Someone whom she has a tragic connection with, and develops an unhealthy obsession.
𝐑𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5. This was a solid thriller that I enjoyed following. Fast paced, mysterious and intriguing! It absolutely checked off on all the things you’d look for in a thriller. The plot twists were pretty good and I enjoyed how things unraveled, even though I somehow saw them coming. I had my qualms with the main character, but overall this was a really great thriller that was enthralling. If you’re looking for a quick and gripping thriller, this is a pretty good one to check out.

My head is spinning!! Did I read this book in a day? Yes I did!
Meredith McCall is living her dream she is a successful NYC psychiatrist. She is married to her handsome pro-hockey player husband, Connor. Their future is looking bright until a game injury begins a spiral of events that ultimately ends in a tragedy for her and another family.
When she is left to deal with the aftermath alone wandering the streets since she can’t take being home alone with her thoughts. Until one day she spots a familiar face. It’s Gabriel Wright, the man who lost his family. She witnessed his devastation firsthand that night, so how is it that he now looks so … happy and smiling?
Needing to to find the answer it quickly turns into an obsession. She just wants to see where he goes and what he does with his time … that’s all she’s not hurting anyone. So Imagine her shock when he walks into her office one day and becomes her new patient! It crosses all ethical boundaries to treat him, but he doesn’t know who she is and she just wants to help, right? It can’t hurt … she’ll keep it professional. I literally couldn’t put this book down! I needed to know what was going to happen next. Whose playing who?
