Waiting for the shoe to drop…
That’s exactly how I spent the entire time reading (aka devouring) this book. Billed as a ‘psychological thriller’ it completely delivered. I wanted to speed read to get to all the answers. Instead, I held myself back and savoured every word….
The characters were mysterious, unpredictable and their actions even more so. Choices were made and made me wonder (as always) at the complexity, and consequences, of our contradictory human behaviour. I pondered, stressed (seriously!) and second-guessed every move as the plot unfolded one tense step at a time…
This author ventured outside of romance and I couldn’t help but follow – and am so glad I did! The characters were wildly entertaining as the story unfolded, keeping me on my reading toes and guessing all the way through. With an eye-popping ending wrapping it all up in an incredible twisty bow, I hope this author will continue to write (lots more) in this genre…
This is the first book I've read by this author but I can assure you, it won't be the last! Meredith is a psychiatrist who has just been through an unimaginable loss, and she feels a lot of guilt about what transpired. As a strange coincidence, she runs into the one person that also has a connection to the incident, and she begins to follow him around. What follows is twisty and unexpected but I don't want to give anything away! Vi Keeland, if you're reading this, I really hope you write a sequel!
What a great psychological thriller from Vi Keeland. Meredith is a psychiatrist whose life has been changed by a horrific accident. She begins to be obsessed with Gabriel, another victim of this accident, and as a result stalks him. Meredith walks a thin line of what is morally right. Vi Keeland writes a character that allows herself to fall down a hole by trusting people she shouldn’t. Does Meredith realize who Gabriel is? Will she be able to lift herself out of this terrifying ordeal? I could not put the is book down. There are so many twists and turns your head will spin. Loved it!
This book was addictive!! Once I started, I couldn’t put it down. I love a good mystery-thriller and The Unraveling delivered in so many ways. This is the story of Meredith, who seemingly has the perfect life until a tragedy tries to take it all away.
We follow Meredith as she comes to terms with her life as it is by examining the life she had before and how it all went wrong. We go on this journey with her as she makes some questionable choices while she attempts to understand what happened then and what is happening now.
This story makes really effective use of a dual timeline. It keeps you guessing as to what happened, who is involved, and whether or not you can trust what you’ve just read. It was so, so good.
The Unraveling has it all: complex, morally grey characters; really great writing; emotional scenes.; and a really satisfying ending. Highly recommend!
I love thrillers and the twist and turns that they have. This story was just that and I loved seeing how everything began to unravel.
Meredith and Gabriel have a shared connection due to an event that completely impacted both their lives, however, not everything is as it seems at times.
For me, the beginning 25% was a little slow but then things really started to pick up and I was sucked in. The story is told in both the present time and the past to give you some insight into the events that led to where Meredith and Gabriel are now. The story is told from Meredith’s POV.
WHAT JUST HAPPENED?!?!
Have you ever read a book so shocking that even once it's finished - you're left completely speechless? This is that book! I am struggling so hard to put into words the absolute jaw dropping greatness of this story. I'm not sure I can do it justice to be completely honest. Having never read anything from this author before, I'm in absolute awe and plan to read everything she's ever written! Apparently, she's known for her spicy romance.... well, Vi Keeland - welcome to the dark side!!
INTENSE. That's the best word to describe this book. Absolutely mind-blowingly intense! I won't say it's unputdownable because I had to put it down multiple times - but that was just so I could catch my breath! My pulse is still pounding! From the unpredictable twists and turns to the extremely explosive spice (is it getting hot in here or is it just this book?!), literally every scene jumped off the page.
After reading the summary, I was excited to read this book, but I definitely had no idea the gripping YOU-esque style adventure I'd find myself on. This is without a doubt one of the BEST psychological thrillers I have ever read!
THIS IS A MUST-READ NOVEL! YOU - yes you reading this.... go add it to your cart NOW! Then take the day off because this is a read it in one sitting and love every freakin' second of it kinda book!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 glorious stars because that's the highest option, but this is one of those novels that deserves more!
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU to NetGalley & Atria Books for the opportunity to read this absolutely incredible digital ARC! All opinions are 100% my own (and factual - read the book and find out!)
Sweet Jesus! I have NEVER read thrillers; this is a first for me. I had no idea what to expect. None. I read the blurb and went in with one eye open. Then I had both eyes wide open, and sometimes I had to close them because this is that kind of book. It's where your heart races, and you get chills all over. I went in, and what I got was one suspenseful ride! Hold on to something, because my Kindle almost dropped a few times. I really have no words except Vi made me addicted to thrillers. How does one go from addicted to romance novels to addicted to thrillers? Vi's the answer!
Thank you to NetGalley and Atria Books for an ARC copy of The Unraveling.
WOW...this was one wild, messy, spicy ride. The writing was fantastic and flowed so well, especially the transition between the past and present stories. I was hooked from the first page and stayed that way until my jaw dropped on the last page. An outstanding first thriller from Vi Keeland and I hope she writes a second! I predict this will be the "Verity" of 2024. Mom, do not read this book 😬😅..everyone else, add this to your TBR right now!
5 big stars and easily the best thriller I've read all year!
I can honestly say this book has blown my mind! I am not a thriller reader at all, however, got the amazing opportunity to receive an ARC for Vi Kelland’s new book and surprise, surprise, it was a , and it was mind blowing fantastic!
At first I was a bit on the fence, not sure if I was going to enjoy this genre, but I got pulled into the story due to the easy and comfortable writing that is so characteristic of Vi.
Meredith is a recently widowed , fighting to get a hold on life after the sudden loss of her in a car accident. While struggling with her loss, she finds herself going deep into the dark hole of grief, until one day she crosses paths with Gabriel, the husband of the woman and father of the child, Connor, Mer’s husband had killed in the crash.
She cannot make herself understand why Gabriel is so happy, moving on with life as if nothing happened. She questions herself, how can that be, how can someone who lost as she did or even more, move forward with life while she can’t ? It’s this train of tough that make Meredith follow Gabriel on random day and triggers all the events in the book.
It was such an intriguing read, I honestly had to read some lines twice as I thought I might have missed some details that lead to the events on the following page. I really loved this book that ending - WOW - I was not expecting that at all. And honestly, I kind of want to know what happens next
Exciting and dangerous as ethical boundaries intertwine and the danger and intensity is heightened, recommended.
Thank you netgalley, the publisher and the author for the advanced reader's copy of this publication.
Great book. The characters are intriguing and keep you on edge thru the book. Great ending but no spoilers on this review. Just make sure you finish the book.
This is my first book by this author (apparently she normally writes spicy romance novels and this was her first thriller). It had a mix of spicy and thriller and it worked. The characters were well developed and I enjoyed how the story was written. It was a roller coaster ride and I did not see that ending coming.
The Unraveling was a twisted psychological thriller that kept me on my toes. I went into it completely blind. I hadn't read the blurb or reviews or anything about it. I'm glad I did that because it paid off in the best way. I loved how the story unraveled at a fast pace. I had all of these different hunches about what was going on and why while reading. When I thought things were finally making sense, something would happen to twist things around. I was always a little worried and uncomfortable. I wanted to feel sorry for Meredith, the main character, but she was slightly unhinged. I'm not going to say anymore because I don't want to ruin the reading experience for anyone, but I will say that Keeland managed to surprise me in the end. That alone would give this book 5 stars even if I hadn't loved reading this book.
This title perfectly sets up the storyline of the book. Meredith's life has begun to unravel with tragedy. As she searches to cope and make sense of life and its consequences, her fragile reality holds on by a tenuous and slipping grip. How do you find happiness when the life you had is suddenly gone? Meredith finds herself obsessed with Gabriel - a man who shares similar pain and yet seems to be okay - while she is not. As she rebuilds her life, she grapples with how to move on and try to reassemble her life in this new reality - with all of its messy pieces.
Meredith reminds me of a silky ribbon that has been unbound from its packaging, literally unraveling and refusing to take the form it once had. Beautiful, but messy.
As Gabriel entered her life, I was often confounded by his character. Who was this man? What was going on in his head? What exact role is he supposed to play in Meredith's life? That was when I realized that Keeland was not only showcasing Meredith's unraveling but her intention to simultaneously unravel her readers, as well. It was a wonderful experience that left me with questions as I puzzled through parts of the story days after finishing the book. You know, one of those books that keeps you occupied for days as you think of the small insignificant details that were pivotal to the story.
Keeland's departure from romance stories with HEAs is a hit! Even if you think you have it all figured out, Keeland knocks you off kilter. It's a captivating story. I look forward to her writing in all genres!
I'm pretty sure this is my first time reading any of Vi Keeland's work, so I can't speak to if it was at all familiar in tone or language to her other work, but this book will for sure encourage me to pick up others! It was very standard thriller-y in that there was a lot going on and throughout, you're not ever certain if Meredith (the narrator and MC) is reliable or not. She's undeniably spiraling, but all the signs point to her paranoia being justified so...
The plot moved at a pace I really liked - there were no lulls, and throughout you're kept engaged with Meredith's mental state, flipping between past and present. I also particularly enjoyed the epilogue when we get to see a POV of another character.
Some other reviewers have mentioned the ending and not getting to see enough of <spoiler>Meredith being "better" or "happier", but that wasn't a miss for me - getting to see her through Gabriel's POV, who was stalking her back, felt appropriate for the story. I don't think it would've felt true to Meredith's character to see her growing in that way when the entirety of the story is centered around her downward spiral, there would've needed to be more build to have her getting better. But Gabriel's POV being the ending and his reveal that he was supposed to travel with someone who was now unavailable?! YESSSS.</spoiler>
Easy 4.5 stars, rounded down to 4.
Thank you to NetGalley and Atria Books for the arc. All opinions are my own. Release date will be July 9, 2024
I was very excited to read this one because I love Vi Keelands romance books. I liked the overall book, it was ok. But it wasn't a five star because it started off a bit slow and then for me it dragged a bit and I mostly guessed what it was about. I wanted more from Mer and her character as far as her getting back to her life and then the ending! Honestly it left me a bit confused. I'm guessing there are more on this book ( which I don't see how), but that ending left the book unfinished for me
Straight up thrillers are not my thing but with all these romance authors venturing into the genre, I had to give them a try. This is definitely a change of pace from Vi Keeland, as I found this heroine extremely unlikable but it was still a good read!
Wow! A wild twisty ride with an ending that has me shuddering! Meredith is a psychiatrist. She is supposed to be helping people but her own life has been turned upside down. Gabriel’s life was ruined by Meredith’s husband. Who is really to blame though? Can Meredith help Gabriel? Can she trust him? Make sure this is on your TBR list and be ready to be shocked!
Thank you to Net Galley and Atria Books for an advance digital copy to read and review.
What a great story! I absolutely devoured this one. Thanks to the publisher and netgalley for letting me read this early. I love all this authors books!
If I could give this book 10 stars I would!
Gabriel is an English Professor specializing in Shakespeare at Columbia University. Meredith is a NY City psychiatrist who loses someone and becomes very deeply depressed. This story is a puzzle to be unraveled, and it sure is, so very slowly. Actually, it’s mind boggling. And the ending? Oh boy. This is not my usual reading material. I usually read romance novels. Because I read Vi Keeland’s books and I love her writing, I thought I’d give it a shot. I was not sorry in the least. Actually, after reading this story, I just sat there and was stunned by it all. It’s a journey I would take on again because of this author. It’s that good.
