I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I loved how we got a glimpse into the past and then were back in the present. It added so much depth overall to the story.
I found myself guessing with every page turned. Just when you think you have it figured out- you definitely DO NOT.
Meredith was a complex character. She initially had it all- the happy marriage, perfect career and seemed well liked. ONE incident ruins it all for her. She finds herself on the other side of the table. She is now the one doing the talking and not the listening. She was definitely one to break that rules and suffer any consequences that may come.
This one is definitely worth your time. You will not see the end coming.
Highly recommend.
I received a free copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
The premise of this thriller is gripping and is deftly written. It has a little fifty shades edge with a cat and mouse plot. Some of the twists were unbelievable, yet it is still an enjoyable read.
The book definitely lives up to the hype that’s been created about it!
At first, I was reluctant because I knew the author as a romance author, but, turns out, she is GREAT at crafting gripping, tense, action-filled, fast-paced and twisty thrillers with deep, developed, complex characters too!
The Unraveling by Vi Keeland is a well-crafted psychological thriller that offers a compelling narrative with enough twists and turns to keep readers engaged until the very end. The story follows Meredith McCall, a psychiatrist who seems to have it all—a successful career and a seemingly perfect marriage to Connor, a prominent hockey player. However, beneath the surface, Meredith's life is far from idyllic. The couple's struggles set off a series of tragic events that lead Meredith down a dark and increasingly unstable path.
Meredith is a complex protagonist who is both fascinating and frustrating. As she begins to unravel, her decisions become more erratic and ethically questionable. While it's easy to sympathize with her grief and the trauma she's endured, her impulsive actions and lack of common sense often strain credibility. It's difficult to reconcile her professional background as a psychiatrist with some of the reckless choices she makes. Despite this, her downward spiral is captivating, and you can't help but be drawn into her chaotic world, even if you find yourself questioning her every move.
The plot is well-paced, with a steady build-up of tension that keeps you turning the pages. Keeland excels at creating an atmosphere of suspense, and just when you think you know where the story is headed, she throws in a twist that takes you by surprise. However, while the twist toward the end is unexpected and adds a new layer to the story, the conclusion feels a bit rushed. After such a tension-filled build-up, the ending lacks the intensity I was hoping for, leaving me somewhat unsatisfied.
Overall, The Unraveling is an engaging and thought-provoking read, particularly for fans of psychological thrillers. Meredith's journey is one of intrigue and emotional complexity, though her erratic behavior and the somewhat underwhelming ending prevent the book from reaching its full potential. It's a solid three-star read that offers plenty of suspense, but it ultimately falls short of delivering the knockout punch I was anticipating.
Thank you to Atria for my copy of THE UNRAVELING.
I'm late to this one and I'm here to say that I agree with the hype around this book. It kept me super entertained and I gobbled it up super fast, If you're needing a good light thriller, this one is for you.
Well, that was intense.
Meredith McCall, a psychiatrist, is struggling with her own grief after her husband tragically dies in an accident. Later when Gabriel Wright comes into her office for counseling as a patient who also has lost someone, Meredith begins to have an unhealthy obsession with his well-being, despite being his doctor. Slowly, Meredith’s grip on reality begins to “unravel” and her paranoia reaches an all time high. Does she have a valid reason for it? Are her instincts still trustworthy?
Keeland skillfully alternates between “now” and “then” throughout the story allowing the reader to see Meredith before her world turned upside down, and the events leading to the crash. The back and forth also allows us to see two different versions of our narrator and how even she, in the “now” begins to question her own sanity.
This intense psychological thriller has serious Fatal Attraction vibes. From page one to the very last sentence of the book, Meredith’s evolution as a character and everything that happens to her in a short period is a wild and chaotic ride. I cannot say too much, as it is best to go in blind into this one. Fair warning, there is alcohol abuse, death, stalking, and a couple of spicy open-door scenes. This dark suspense will have you yelling out loud at Meredith’s behavior.
Thank you to NetGalley, Atria Books, and of course the author Vi Keeland for the advanced copy of the book. The Unraveling is out now! All opinions are my own.
This is a good book, I was engaged from the beginning, it went along a line that I sort of anticipated, though I did not see that twist at the end. Meredith is a psychiatrist in New York City, though currently she's on a forced leave due to something that her husband had done that affected her. She's in a cafe when she notices a man, Gabriel, who shared in that something that her husband had done, so she decides to follow him, because he's looking very happy and she wants to know why. Meredith also has to undergo therapy of her own in order to meet conditions and be able to operate her practice again, she mentions to her therapist that she had seen Gabriel and had followed him, and he of course tells her to stop. Not long after she is able to open her practice and guess who shows up wanting to be a patient, Gabriel. Of course she's torn, she wants to help him, but ethically she can't be involved. But that doesn't stop her from going to dinner with him and finding herself growing close even though her therapist had told her to stop, she finds she can't. The story is told in a Then and Now fashion, the Then portion is what happened with her husband and what affected her, though this portion was not really long, the remaining chapters were all Now. There is some sex that is somewhat graphic, the story does become very suspenseful and I could not turn the pages fast enough. This is my first book by this author, I will have to look at others by her. Thanks to #Netgalley and #Atria/Emily Bestler Books for the ARC.
If you’re looking for a book that will hook you from the beginning, this is the one. I enjoyed every part of it. Thank you for letting me read this!

What a thrill! This was so bingeable & had me on the edge of my seat from start to finish! I devoured it in no time, completely engrossed in the story. Right from the first page, I was pulled in & couldn’t put it down.
Told from a single POV, the narrative explores themes of obsession, addiction, & stalking with plenty of unexpected twists along the way. I loved the “then and now” chapters, which added layers of tension & kept me guessing at every turn. The story had me constantly questioning what was real, as it expertly portrayed paranoia & spiraling 🌀 thoughts. I found myself saying out loud more than a few times “what is happening?!” The forbidden attraction was intense, 🔥 practically sizzling off the pages.
Fans of the show YOU will find a lot to love here, including an Easter egg hidden in the plot. The MC, Meredith, is both captivating & frustrating—her self-sabotaging tendencies & unsteady mental state had me wanting to scream at her more than once. But that’s part of what made the book so compelling. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good psychological thriller!
⚠️ loss of a spouse, addiction
𝗣𝗹𝗼𝘁: Meredith McCall, a New York City psychiatrist, is struggling after a devastating loss. She becomes obsessed with Gabriel Wright, a man with a tragic connection to her past. Despite knowing it's unethical, Meredith can't resist treating Gabriel when he becomes her patient. As her life spirals out of control, Meredith’s obsession deepens. Just when it seems things can't get worse, they do.
The twists just kept coming! Dr McCall is a classic unreliable narrator. A tragic accident leaves a mother and daughter dead along with her husband. The obsession takes over her life and it’s hard to tell who is stalking who.
I was very impressed with The Unraveling. I’m so used to Vi’s romance writing, this was a nice change and I think she did a great job. I truly hope she decides to write more books that are psychological.
This book had a lot of twists and turns and constantly kept your mind wondering what was going on and what the ultimate betrayal was. I really ended up liking Meredith’s character and her growth throughout this book. She unfortunately had a lot of bad things happening all at once and she dealt with the issues to make herself a better and stronger person. I won’t say much more than this because I don’t want to give any of the book away!
I would recommend this to anyone who likes psychological thrillers and definitely any fan of Vi Keeland!
***Thank you Netgalley and Atria Books for an ARC copy in return for an honest review***
The Unraveling follows main character, Meredith and her connection to and unhealthy obsession with man who suffered a similar tragic loss as she did. As a psychologist, she cannot understand how he is coping so well - but is it a cover? As her obsession grows, she begins to wonder is there something more sinister at play?
The Unraveling was a very quick read that is highly addictive and very easy to fly though. There is a lot of things going on throughout the entire book, but I think the ending took the cake for me. While I overall enjoyed it, I had some troubles following the plot and wanted "more".
I have heard many reviews that rave about this one and knew that I had to get my request in ASAP. Thank you to NetGally for the ARC ebook. I finished this in under two days and could not stop thinking about it. Very good twists, highly recommend anyone who is looking for their next thriller!
The self-loathing and then the absolute dread rolling off of Meredith is palpable. Combined with her blatantly BAD choices - I wanted to look away but I couldn't put this book down. The ending twist was somehow both expected and unexpected at the same time, probably because every single person in this book is an unreliable narrator and you have no idea what's really going on with any of them. I hope there's a sequel.
Meredith McCall is getting ready to see patients again. After serving a one-year suspension, she is getting ready to get back to work. She is still grieving the loss of her husband and the family they had always talked about. As a psychiatrist, she understands that grief has its own timeline. As a woman, she understands that it’s time to move on. But she just can’t. And then she catches a glimpse of Gabriel. And he was laughing. He looked like he was happy, that he had moved on. But how could he?
Meredith’s husband was a professional hockey player. He’d been driving that night, alone in the car, when he hit the wife and young daughter of Gabriel Wright. And he looked happy. How could he be happy so soon after the accident that killed his family, when Meredith couldn’t find any joy herself? She had lost her husband, but he had been the one responsible for the accident. Meredith feels responsible for it too, with her negligence. She had stopped paying attention to what was going on, and three people died.
But Gabriel seemed to be moving on, and Meredith wanted to know how that was possible. So she starts to follow him. She watches him as he goes to a storage unit every day, and then to his job teaching at a college. She sees him eating with young blonde women and wonders if he’s dating them. Meredith hadn’t been able to think about dating yet, hadn’t even tried downloading a dating app.
Meredith’s psychiatrist convinces her to give up her stalking, and it gets easier when she can finally see patients again. She had someone filling in for her while she was suspended, and now she has fewer patients to go back to. But her assistant has been advertising for new clients, so Meredith has some new patients along with some of her previous ones. But nothing could prepare her for when the new patient who walked into her office was Gabriel himself.
Bestselling romance author V.I. Keeland has taken a chance on a thriller, and she has come out swinging. with The Unraveling. With layers of secrets and lies. Readers don’t know who to trust, especially Meredith, since she can’t tell if she’s being followed or not. The tension ramps up slowly, the danger getting closer, until the truth finally comes out and you can breathe. For a minute.
I got swept up in The Unraveling and had to read all the way to the end. It was a crazy ride, with a couple of very spicy scenes (ghost pepper level, in my opinion), but it was the psychological tension that really drew me in. That and the mystery of what really happened to these characters. And then there was that ending that changed the whole story, so be sure to stay until the very last word.
Egalleys for The Unraveling were provided by Atria Books through NetGalley, with many thanks.
I read this book in a day because I just could not get enough! That says it all. A fast paced, psychological thriller that did not disappoint. Pick this one up!
Thanks to NetGally for their ARC. WOW.
What a great read. Domestic thriller at its finest.. My first from this author, but not the last.
This book reminded me of the Lifetjme movie formula for some reason. Was it a decent read that mostly kept me interested? Yes. Would I highly recommend it? Meh. I would just tell people it was okay. It is very reminiscent of a McFadden book, if you are a fan of them. I just didn’t love it or hate it, so middle of the road it is.
In "The Unraveling" Vi Keeland we are brought into the life of Meredith. When the unspeakable happens she cannot seem to see any future where she is happy again. But then more than one coincidence to many happens. She starts to question her own sanity - is it just her imagination or something more sinister.
An ending I did not see coming.
This is quite a book! I wasn’t expecting to sucked in so quickly, but I can’t resist a slightly unhinged narrator and Meredith is teetering on the edge of unhinged and wading into the wrong side of good judgment. This is a book that is hard to talk about because there are lots of little (and big) twists along the way. I’ll cover those more in a spoiler review so we can really unpack that ending.
The story centers around psychiatrist Meredith McCall who lives and practices in New York City. It was only two years ago that Meredith was happily married to an NHL hockey player named Connor and the two were planning to start a family. But an injury led Connor to require pain medications that eventually led to struggles with withdrawal when he’s trying to ween off. Then, a tragic accident leads everything to fall apart.
In the present, Meredith is picking up the pieces of her life. She’s begun mandatory therapy as part of the conditions to start her psychiatric practice back up. Her marriage is over and she’s slowly thinking about dating. And she’s lightly stalking Gabriel Wright. It frustrated Meredith that Gabriel seems to be doing so well after the tragedy that changed both of their lives when she is not. She starts following him—only sometimes—and observing his life. He meets with women, he teaches at a university, and he stops by a storage facility regularly.
But when Gabriel Wright unexpectedly walks into her psychiatry practice, Meredith is stunned. He seems to have no clue who she is, and genuinely is seeking therapy. Meredith knows it’s unethical to treat him—especially without disclosing their connection—but she can’t seem to turn him away. As she continues to see him, her life unravels. Could things get any worse? In this case, they can and they do…
The tragedy two years earlier is vague at first. The reader learns right away that Gabriel lost his wife and daughter as a result, and that Meredith blames herself. But from the beginning we know that Meredith’s guilt seems tied to Connor’s involvement in the tragedy, rather than her own. I was so curious to know what happened. It seemed to me like Meredith was taking on more than her share of fault in this situation. Or is there more that hasn’t been revealed yet? (obviously there is…)
I thought it was interesting that Meredith was honest with her therapist about her obsession, especially since he is part of her board remediation to retain her license and her practice. She didn’t seem that worried about telling him, and to his credit, he held rational conversations with her about it. Things reach a new level when Gabriel directly enters Meredith’s sphere as a patient. Is it a coincidence? It appears to be.
The entire book is addictive! Meredith may have been obsessed with Gabriel, but I was obsessed with this book. Lots of twists and turns and a great zinger added right at the end. Don’t look ahead! Let it unfold.
