This book was… meh. I just couldn’t connect with the characters and the story wasn’t anything memorable and I got so bored.
The way the book was written definitely made me wanna keep reading because Lauren’s (fmc) past kept being mentioned without really giving answers until the end and I was too curious to dnf this (and I would’ve). There were lots of twist and turn and creepy mysteries.
This was an engaging and suspenseful debut. It had me guessing till the end- I cannot wait to read more books by this author.
I was sent an ARC by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you, NetGalley!
The One That Got Away with Murder was a great read by Trish Lundy. Robbie and Trevor Cresmont are privileged brothers who have killed. They also have enough wealth to make sure they are never found guilty of wrong doing. Everyone in Happy Valley believes they killed their ex-girlfriends. Robbie’s ex, Victoria, drowned at the family lake house. A year later, Trevor’s girlfriend died of an overdose. Lauren O’Brian is the new girl at school, but she isn’t a good girl. She starts a no-strings-attached relationship with Robbie. During their last weekend together, she finds shocking evidence that can implicate Robbie. I enjoyed reading this book and can’t wait to read more by the author.
Very enjoyable! The brothers are wealthy jerks who think they are above everything because of all the money they have. They each have an exgirlfriend who was murdered. Couldn’t have been them though. Enter Lauren. She isn’t exactly squeaky clean herself, and as the new girl in town, she finds herself getting caught up with the brothers. Will she be the next victim or the hero….
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for providing a copy of this audio eARC for review.
I really enjoyed this novel. There were plot twists, and none of the characters seem completely innocent. It made predicting the "villain" more difficult. I thought the characters were believable - high school drama can be extreme. I also enjoyed how the pasts of major characters was brought into play.
The narrators were excellent. The intonation and pacing were good and the voices were animated and engaging.

This was a fun YA thriller that was super easy and quick to get through! I did the combo of the ebook and audio, which both were great choices! I was intrigued by this story!
The story itself was so fun and twisty, I was so compelled with the drama going on. It definitely grabbed my attention from the beginning and I had a great time reading it.
I really enjoyed following Lauren’s character, though there are a lot of unreliable characters in this… which I actually found more interesting.
This was definitely a stellar YA thriller debut. I had a great time and flew through this entertaining, compelling, and addictive read!
Thank you so much NetGalley, Henry Holt, and Macmillan Audio for the review copies in exchange for my honest review!
This YA thriller had just enough unexpected surprises that kept me engaged. It feels like everyone is hiding something as the tension builds. Privilege mixed with murder is a deadly combination. Are the Crestmont brothers as dangerous as the rumors surrounding them suggest? Although it started out slow, the pace greatly picked up halfway as secrets were revealed and the past came back with a vengeance. The narration added a layer of suspense to this original, entertaining thriller. Thank you, NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for my audiobook.
Lauren has recently moved with her mother to a new town, attempting to get a fresh start and escape her past. Kids at her new school have been enduring trauma of their own----multiple girls have died in suspicious circumstances, and people think their boyfriends, the Crestmont brothers, were to blame. Despite the rumors and pressure from her friends, Lauren forms a relationship with Robbie Crestmont. As she spends more time with the Crestmonts, Lauren starts to question if they are behind the deaths after all.
Fans of YA murder mysteries will probably enjoy this one, even if it does feel a bit "tropey." The ending felt a bit rushed, and while I didn't predict it, I wasn't left reeling from the big reveal either. Not a bad choice, but not necessarily a stand out in the genre either.
Firstly, let me say that I am not the demographic for this book. With that out of the way, the book was meh. I can definitely see where this would be appealing to young adults (and I wouldn’t have a problem adding it to my high school library), but I really didn’t like any of the characters (including the main one), so found myself not really caring what happened to them. I was interested in the main character’s back story, which was presented as a mystery until the very end (and, to be honest, found a little underwhelming). I do think the author did a pretty good job at portraying just how terrible teenage girls are to each other, so there is that. This was a case of literally everyone being a suspect until they were eliminated.
Helen Laser did a fine job with the majority of the audiobook narration; Joshua Quinn had a very small role.
I recently finished this debut YA thriller, and it was absolutely gripping. Robbie and Trevor Cresmont, two wealthy brothers with a dark past, are the center of a chilling mystery in Happy Valley. Their ex-girlfriends’ mysterious deaths set the stage for a suspenseful tale that kept me hooked from start to finish.
Lauren O’Brian, the new girl with a troubled past, quickly became my favorite character. Her relationship with Robbie was intriguing, especially as she discovered evidence that could implicate him in the deaths. The twists and turns were expertly done, keeping me guessing until the very end.
What I loved most was the intense suspense and well-developed characters. The small-town setting added to the story’s atmosphere, making the darker elements even more compelling.
(As someone who spent some time in Happy Valley, this is 100% place the set a murder story. The One That Got Away with Murder is all about guilt in plain sight. It's about the ones we think did the deed, the easy answers, the coincidences that make sense. But at the same time, it's about the insidious culprits. The ones no one suspects who are lurking, uncaught, unseen, amongst us. It's about a community so convinced, but also united in their sense of identity. So what would happen if everything was flipped on its head? There are plenty of twists and turns and the narration of Helen Laser & Joshua Quinn do a stunning job at describing these shivering feelings. The twists and emotions that only a wobble in the voice, a well timed pause, can add.
They certainly don't write YA the way they did when I was young! This does not read like a YA even though the characters are in high school. The characters are sophisticated and complex in very grown up ways. The tension hit the right notes at the right points in the story and I ended up taking an unexpected road trip one weekend just so I could listen to the book as I drove. The writing is fantastic and the narration is pitch perfect. 10/10 recommend
Trying for a fresh start but still falling into all the traps of high school. Trying to fit in, trying to find happiness Lauren is faced with believing rumors or possible death. Entangled in new feelings takes her on a not-so-smart trip where she discovers evidence of the other dead girl. VERDICT- a fab addition for teen libraries that enjoy mystery books.
This was an excellent YA mystery that kept me interested from the beginning. While you think you know exactly what is happening all along the twists keep coming. It was well written and well paced.
This was a fun ans twisty read. Its one of those ones where just as you think you know for sure "who done it", it flips the script.
I though it was well written and engaging, with interesting characters. Lots of drama and mystery to keep you wanting more.
The One that Got Away with Murder by Trish Lundy is a riveting YA thriller that delves deep into the intricacies of high school dynamics and the weight of suspicion. As Lauren navigates her new life in Happy Valley, Pennsylvania, she grapples with the rumors surrounding her new friend Robbie's past, which cast a shadow over their relationship. Lundy masterfully builds tension, leaving readers on the edge of their seats until the final reveal, even though some may find the resolution a tad rushed.
Despite its pacing, Lundy's debut novel excels in its portrayal of teenage complexities and the blurred lines between truth and perception. Lauren's character is both relatable and compelling, offering a nuanced exploration of trust and betrayal in adolescence. Through her narrative, Lundy captures the essence of youthful struggles with authenticity, resonating with readers long after the final page.
Overall, The One that Got Away with Murder is a captivating addition to the YA thriller genre, showcasing Lundy's talent for crafting suspenseful narratives and engaging characters. Fans of Holly Jackson and mystery enthusiasts alike will find much to enjoy in this gripping tale of secrets, suspicion, and the search for truth amidst the chaos of high school life.
WOW. I am just now emerging into murder and murder mystery novels and this one had me HOOKED. From the very beginning until the very end I had absolutely zero clue who committed the crime. As a listener you would be led to believe it was clearly one person and then SWOOP turns out it isn't that person. I loved the way this book was written. I loved the narrator -- you also get a secondary narrator at one point (no spoilers though so I can't say when). I cannot recommend this book enough. Easy 4 stars.
I also need someone else to read this so I can see if it truly does leave you in the dark the whole time or I'm just a newb in the mystery novel world.
I just finished listening to The One That Got Away with Murder by Trish Lundy and Narrated by Helen Laser; Joshua Quinn and here are my thoughts.
Lauren is the new girl. A soccer star joining a team that only has space because the last girl died. She mysteriously drowned and the boy she is having a no strings-attached fling with…Was the dead girl’s boyfriend and she died at his lake house. Not like Lauren is a good girl but she was hoping for a fresh start.
Vowing to break it off before school starts Lauren accepts an invite to go to the lake house with Robbie. While on the boat Lauren finds the bikini top that Victoria was wearing before she drowned but was never recovered and it has a blood stain on it.
Not knowing what to do, Lauren puts the top back but not knowing who to trust or where to turn is just as dangerous as the knowledge she now has..
Firstly, the narrators were brilliant. They kept the right tone to their voices and held the exact amount of intrigue I needed to get sucked in.
The character build up was phenomenal. I haven’t enjoyed the good/bad threshold of a character in a book like this ever. You never know who’s telling the truth and what is the actual truth and no one is reliable and I love that. Lauren really wanted to get a fresh start in her new life with her mom and her new boyfriend. Whatever happened to her is a big dark cloud over her and it makes for a really dark narration.
The idea that the two brothers both lost their girlfriends under mysterious circumstances is the crux of the story and you can see why they are being blamed for murder and how these things weren’t their faults. You will find yourself leaning each way so many times and I had no clue until the reveal at the end what the truth was. I love books that keep me guessing.
The ending did seem a bit neat and a little rushed but I didn’t feel like it missed anything.
Overall a solid thriller!!

A page-turner!
After experiencing a traumatic event in her past town, Lauren and her mother have recently moved to a new place to start over. Lauren was hoping for a fresh start by keeping a low profile and focusing on graduation. Unfortunately, things aren't going as planned. Lauren's casual relationship with a boy named Robbie has become the talk of the school. To make matters worse, rumors have been circulating that Robbie may have played a role in his ex-girlfriend's death. Now, Lauren is in a tough spot, not knowing whether or not to believe the rumors and if she made a mistake by getting involved with Robbie.
This was an absolute page-turner! The author did an excellent job of keeping me engaged and guessing throughout the entire story. Although I thoroughly enjoyed the book, I do think that the ending could have been more fleshed out. Things did wrap up rather quickly and neatly. Despite this, I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a thrilling YA mystery or thriller. It's definitely worth a read!
***Thank you to NetGalley, Trish Lundy, and Macmillan Audio for graciously sending me the audiobook to review. As always, all thoughts are my own.***
This was a good twisty YA mystery! You don’t know who to trust or who to believe.
I don’t want to give anything away but I highly recommend this one!
Narrated mostly by, Helen Laser who does a great job at bringing all the emotions and Joshua Quinn who tells us another side of the story and does a good job too!
