This was a gripping YA mystery that follows Lauren as she moves to a new high school her senior year, and falls into a mystery and possibly the wrong crowd. As far as the plot goes, it was really well done, with so many twists that I didn’t see coming. I was shocked at the ending, and that’s rare and unexpected. It would have been rated higher if the characters were a bit more dynamic. And I know high schoolers do some rough stuff, but this was kind of over-the-top and some of their actions were not very teenage-ish so it took away from the believability at times. Still, overall definitely 4 stars for the mystery! I listened to the audiobook version and it made for a very quick listen. Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the ALC in exchange for my honest review.
I don’t know what it is about books like this, but man do they draw me in quick! I finished this book pretty quickly and I didn’t want to stop listening to it. The narrators, Helen Laser and Joshua Quinn keep you engaged with their tone of voice and their presentation of the reading.
Lauren is the new girl in town about to go into her senior year. She moved from California to Pennsylvania with her mom after a horrible accident happened with her ex. In her new town, she is on the soccer team and secretly sees this guy named Robbie. She had no clue how this one thing was about to change her life again.
Robbie comes from a family that has money. His dad is an attorney well-known in their town. Robbie is also well known in his town, but not for good reasons. His ex-girlfriend had drowned at his family's lake house and everyone in the town accused him. His little brother Trevor also lost his girlfriend to an overdose. This family doesn’t seem to have the best track record.
As you move through the book, a lot of secrets get unfolded and brought to the surface. Lauren starts to suspect everyone for different reasons. As the story unfolds, the person who is the actual murderer doesn’t surprise me. I thought the book was well written. It kept you engaged and gave you just enough suspense and curiosity to keep you wanting more!
Thank you, NetGalley, for allowing me to review this book! Thank you, Tish Lindy, for writing this book. It was so engaging and kept me wanting more! Thank you, Macmillan Audio, for producing this audiobook!
This was a fun ya mystery read! It's a good time and a quick read. The narrator does really well and has a great pace at telling the story
Thank you so much to Macmillan Audio for the advance copy of this book!
What a stellar debut for Trish Lundy!
This book had everything you could want in a YA Thriller. There was a smidge of romance, complicated friendship and of course death.
There were a lot of characters in this which did find the beginning hard to keep track of but as you go on in the book it came easier to track.
Lauren herself has her own secrets which we got tidbits about throughout the book until the reveal happens. I felt bad for her at times as she made this big change from moving across the country, her mom is in this new relationship and is just trying to survive being a teenager. As a new student in the school, somehow Lauren gets wrapped up in trying to figure out the mystery of who killed a student at her school. And it all came back to a boy she met and started hooking up with because the rumor has it that, "Every girl the Crestmonts date winds up dead."
Majority of the characters were unreliable so that made the journey of the story very fun. I thought the pacing of the book was pretty good and kept moving. I don't want to give away all that happens in this book but I will say I was not completely surprised by the revelations at the end and I wish I could say why it didn't surprise me but what fun would that be!
I thought the narrators Helen Laser and Joshua Quinn did a great job with their characters! Helen was excellent as Lauren and brought her vulnerability and youthfulness to the character. Joshua Quinn had such a menacing tone which was perfect for his character.
I do recommend giving this one a read! It was an addicting story & I'm looking forward to reading the author's future work.
PS - As a Pennsylvanian who lives around 3 hours away from Penn State, I absolutely love that this took place in Happy Valley!
Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for this audio ARC.
Helen Laser was great. Joshua Quinn’s voice was a bit creepy, perfect for the character he was reading for.
The story was good. I thought the bad person was easy to pick and then it was someone else, so yay for the little surprise.
Great small town mystery with excellent twists. New girl in town escaping from her troubled past and looking for a fresh start. She gets involved with the wrong people and finds herself at great risk while trying to find out the truth from rumours all while running from her own dark past.
Narrated by Helen Laser and Joshua Quinn both outstanding and I will be looking for more books read by this team.
Thanks to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the opportunity to listen to this great mystery audiobook.

I feel like I took this journey along with the character in trying to figure out who killed two high school girls who dated the Crestmont boys, two wealthy brothers.
Lauren has a troubled past of her own, but she’s trying for fresh start across the country. Spending her senior year as the new kid isn’t going as well as she thought.
This book was incredibly twisty, and I found myself trying to solve the mystery along with Lauren. Every person I suspected, she eventually suspected, and we knocked out the clues together. Loved the fast pace.

🔥📚 Unbelievable debut alert! Trish Lundy's 'The One That Got Away With Murder' had me hooked from page one. It's been two days since I finished, and I'm still reeling! I'm at a loss for words to describe how amazing it is. Trust me, drop everything and snag a copy now—it's a game-changer. 10/10 ⭐️ #MustRead #Thriller #NewFavorite #netgalley
This was a little too overdramatic and young adult-y for my tastes. While it wasn't for me I would recommend it for fans of shows like Pretty Little Liars and books full of secrets, lies and revenge set in the drama-filled world of mean girl high school cliques. Good narration as an audiobook too. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this early audio copy by a new to me author in exchange for my honest review!
I'm honestly shocked.. They weren't even on my suspect list!
Great YA Mystery Thriller, Ooooo it kept me soooo interested!
Publisher's summary
Be careful who you fall for...
Robbie and Trevor Cresmont have a body count—the killer kind. Handsome and privileged, the Crestmont brothers have enough wealth to ensure they’ll never be found guilty of any wrongdoing, even if all of Happy Valley believes they're behind the deaths of their ex-girlfriends. First there was soccer star Victoria Moreno, Robbie’s ex, who mysteriously drowned at the family lake house. Then, a year later, Trevor’s girlfriend died of a suspicious overdose.
But the Crestmonts aren’t the only ones with secrets. Lauren O'Brian might be the new girl at school, but she's never been a good girl. With a dark past of her own, she's desperate for a fresh start. Except when she starts a no-strings-attached relationship with Robbie, her chance is put in jeopardy. During what’s meant to be their last weekend together, Lauren stumbles across shocking evidence that just might implicate Robbie.
With danger closing in, Lauren doesn't know who to trust. And after a third death rocks the town, she must decide whether to end things with Robbie or risk becoming another cautionary tale.

Mean girl murder videos though out. Loved the quick chapters and easy to follow storyline. At times it was a little slow but overall a good read.

The One That Got Away with Murder read like a combination of a McManus book and an episode of Pretty Little Liars. I loved it! I always love a YA whodunnit, and this one was pretty riveting. There were lots of red herrings, which I thought were fun as the puzzle was being pieced together. Lauren's backstory was imparted in a really meaningful way, and she was easy to root for as an underdog. I thought the author did a great job of balancing the current issues with her backstory in a way that didn't confuse the reader.
I really liked The One That Got Away With Murder by Trish Lundy. It was a fast-paced and twisty YA thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat. Multiple times I just knew I had figured it out and I was wrong every time.
Thank you Macmillan Audio, Trish Lundy, and NetGalley for the advanced audio in exchange for my honest review.
From Cali to Happy Valley, Lauren’s mom moves her cross country to start her senior year of high school. Her mom’s new boyfriend doesn’t seem that bad. Except that he’s always there. Always. And then there’s Robbie. A boy that gives her an escape from her own struggles. Her teammates warn her against her new hookup.
Then school starts and a significant character doesn’t survive the pep rally. Was it self inflicted? Accidental? Or was it murder?
What follows is a wild ride that just about gave me whiplash. Be it good or bad, it felt like it was genuinely how a teenager would solve a crime.
If you are a fan of AGGGTM, you will likely enjoy this book. I think this was a great debut novel. The narrator’s of the audiobook did a nice job.
This was a nice YA book. It started a bit slow but picked up. A girl has a tragic event before her senior year and her family moves to a new town for a fresh start. There she gets twisted in trying to solve a year old murder of a high school student.
Another amazing book that had me hooked from start to finish! I couldn't stop listening once I started. The narrator was also very good and easy to listen to
Loved it! Was not expecting the ending - very well written! Definitely reading this at the next book club
Being as I just read the synopsis on Goodreads, I see this is a DEBUT novel for this author. That being said, watch out for this one!!
We open up with Lauren bringing coffee to her Mom (a nurse). She appreciates this, but wonders why? And then Lauren tells us about the HOTTIE (Robbie) she’s hooking up with after delivering the coffee to her Mom!
We bounce back and forth between now, and the past, and Lauren tells us all about why she and her Mom moved from sunny CA to frigid PA…for her senior year of HS.
The good news is she plays soccer…pretty well, and has a built in friend cushion because of this. The question is, will it last? Especially when she is warned to stay away from Robbie by someone on the team.
Then we hear Robbie’s side of the story in alternating POV’s. He hasn’t had a great year either. BUT, he is from a very wealthy family, and his Dad is a top lawyer…
We also hear from Lauren’s Mom, and her relatively new boyfriend, Mark, and his teenage daughter who goes to school with Lauren…
Robbie’s father and brother check in too!
So yes, a lot of characters, but it was easy for me to follow!
When we start to hear of recent deaths in the town, and the suspicions from all the small town people…well, that’s when it really starts to get interesting…
Yes, I guessed whodunnit…and, I was totally wrong!!
Thanks so much to #NetGalley and #MacmillanAudio for an ARC of the audiobook which is due out in about a week on 4/16/24!

It was just ok to me! It had a few relatable characters and it had a good narrator. Thanks to NetGalley for letting me listen to this in exchange for an honest review!
This was a really good debut YA thriller. First I did enjoy Helen Laser telling this story. I felt like she was entertaining and held my attention. Joshua Quinn did a good job but he only did a voice at the end so you didn't get much time with him. I wish they would have the female and male parts acted out by the same sex just because it's so much easier to follow along. This was a fun ride. I did guess the first twist but I did not figure out the last twist. I. feel like the characters were well written. I also felt like the pacing in this book was really good. Trish definitely kept me entertained while trying to figure out how everything was going to go down. I would definitely recommend this audiobook!
