This is a great YA thriller! While I wasn’t as sucked in as some thrillers, I still liked it and didn’t see the twist coming until in the moment. It’s a quick read and would be a great intro to mystery/thrillers.

Thank you for this ARC!
This was a solid YA thriller that would appeal to older YA readers (and some adults). It had some mature content mixed with high school drama. I thought I had the killer predicted but I ended up being surprised in the end. It isn't necessarily a book I will recommend to all but I would definitely recommend to readers of this genre.
As far as the audiobook: The narrator had a nice pacing and I enjoyed listening to her. I did wonder if it wasn't as polished as the final product because the transitions sounded abrupt at times and I wasn't sure if anything would change with that.
This was a fun one. It absolutely gave off Holly Jackson vibes but I’m here for that! At the end there was a moment where I thought, “didn’t they do this in 13 Reasons Why”, but as a fan I really enjoyed it. So much so that I finished in one day!
The narrator did a great job in portraying the emotions of the characters, making you feel as if you were right there. However, there were times where a chapters end would blend immediately with another sentence and I would have to back up the audiobook to make sure it didn’t slip and I didn’t miss anything, but I have a feeling that’s more to do with the fact that this is an advanced copy therefore the production might not be complete. Overall, this read keeps you on your toes and just when you think you have it figured out you are pivoted in a total new direction. You’re going to love this one.
I CONSUMED this book within four hours. Definite Holly Jackson/Karen McManus vibes. I thought I figured out what really happened three times, only to be completely wrong.
Thank you so much to NetGalley and MacMillan Audio for an Audio Arc of this title in exchange for my honest review.
Phew….Finally a well written book. Of late I have read so many titles where the prose was questionable that so was getting frustrated and about to shift my rating system. But this showed me that a YA book can be a well constructed and enjoyable book for all ages.
The audio reader did a great job with reading the book with enough performance that you got drawn into the story but didn’t over do it where you as the consumer couldn’t create their own imagery based off the prose.
As for that prose, what I liked about it was the descriptions of what is occurring without the over use of adjectives and a thesaurus. Sentence to sentence flowed where you could easily picture what the character was wearing or the room they were in without going on ad nauseam explaining every detail. The language also sounded like a teenager. While they were doing activities that some would find to be more adult (sex and drugs) they didn’t sound like they were old before their years.
The book definitely had some typical YA thriller tropes but they didn’t bother me as they didn’t feel forced. I have a feeling some may not buy into the unreliable narrator feel of the book although she is upfront about her flaws and triggers but give it time as she is reliable. I did figure out the killer well before the end of the book but unlike other books that screams it, I did have a few on my list for a bit which was a nice change.
While I consumed the audio book, I expect the regular copy will be a very swift read as I binged it very quickly. So if you’re a lover of YA crime thrillers, give this one a go. I look forward to this authors future books as her debut was very good.
My review on Goodreads since it doesn’t auto post it. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/6340907219
This YA thriller coming out April 16th definitely reminded me of The Good Girls Guide Series, but with a bit more of an edge.
Lauren’s on a mission for a fresh start in a new town and school, leaving behind the fallout from a fiery incident that wrecked her rep and friendships. Little did she know, the new town’s got its own closet full of skeletons, and the first friend she makes is smack in the middle of all the secrets!
This book is a rollercoaster of mystery, suspense, teenage drama, and MURDER! You’ll find yourself rooting for the characters not just on the soccer field, but also as they piece together the puzzle of the multiple suspicious deaths.
I do have to just add that some bits felt a tad more grown-up than what I personally expected to find from the usual teen read…
Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with an Arc of this Audiobook for review. This does not in any way shape or form alter my opinions or rating of this audiobook.
I was left captivated by the narrator and utterly unprepared for the twists and turns that this novel took. It was never expected, and I loved the constant mystery and problem solving throughout the novel. There's this ominous feeling throughout and when you think you know what is going to happen next, you get the unexpected. I was hooked from the beginning and listened to it in one sitting. Would recommend 5/5
A twisting "who is the real killer" story! It kept me engaged and wanting to know the truth. Some thoughts:
*Lauren was pretty dumb when she thought she found concrete evidence and doing nothing about it.
*Her "step family" are just awful people.
*I would not have guessed the true killer. It was kind of left field.
*The adults in this book are all pretty self involved considering there is someone killing girls.
Both of the narroratorswere clear and easy to follow along with. Their tone matched the energy of the story and pacing was on par.
Would recommend.
Many thanks to Netgalley, Macmillan Audio and Trish Lundy for a copy of the book. All opinions are of my own.
Well damn, I really thought I had it figured out right until the last few chapters. This was a great book. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. I listened to the audiobook and the narration was easy to listen too. The writing made me feel like I was back in high school again (minus the murder), it really brought me there with all the characters. Highly recommend.
This book had me guessing until the very moment of the shocking, horrifying reveal. It is brilliantly constructed with perfect pacing as the clues and action build until you have no idea who to believe. I’m absolutely in awe of what Trish Lundy has created here. YA readers are in for a truly twisty treat this spring. Definitely check out content notes for this one in advance, and while I think it will have massive cross-over appeal to adult thriller and mystery fans, this is not one I would suggest to middle grade readers looking to read up. Highly recommend!!
Thank you Netgalley for this audio edition of The One That Got Away with Murder by Trish Lundy.
Did anyone else think that this book could be one giant reference to Friends, or am I just that much of an old Millennial?
This was a fun and fast paced murder mystery. It's sexy, it's full of twists and turns, and it's a lot of fun. Great to read while enjoying a drink at the lake.
This was a great story with lots of twists and turns all the way through. A typical whodunit. The plot was really well written and I was lead down a lot of false paths before finding out who the real culprit was.
There were a lot of characters in this book and I struggled to keep up with who was who. With a physical book I would have just flicked back through the pages but since it was an audiobook I couldn't do that so it was a but harder to keep track of the characters.
I loved listening to this audiobook! It's perfect if you enjoyed "A Good Girl's Guide To Murder" as it had very similar vibes.
Lauren has moved from California. She has met Robbie, who is very rich but volunteers at the clinic her mother works at
Lauren has been warned to stay away from Robbie. They say everyone he is involved with ends up dead. Then Lauren finds a bikini top with blood on it worn by his last girlfriend that was found in the lake. Her death was ruled accidental, of course
Is robbie really a killer. Why was this bikini top hidden in the console of his boat. Is she next. Are the rumors true that Robbie is bad news, or can Lauren help prove Robbie's innocence and find the real killer instead
Because this isn't the only teen that ends up dead
This story follows Lauren, a high school student new to town. She doesn't know the history of her classmates, and luckily they don't know hers. She quickly finds herself in the midst of some serious drama, the deadly kind. Two dead girls connected to one family? She finds out she's quite literally sleeping with the enemy, as her new fling was the boyfriend of one of the deceased. Should she stay with him to get closer to the truth?
This book screams YA. It's not too dark or too graphic. I was able to finish the whole audiobook in one day and the story is really easy to follow. There's not a ton of depth to the characters or the plot line, but it's still entertaining! If you need a listen that you don't have to try extremely hard to follow the story, this one's for you.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC of this audiobook!
Thank you Netgalley and Macmillan Audio for the ALC.
Story: 🌟🌟🌟🌟
Narration: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Overall: 🌟🌟🌟🌟💫
An excellent YA thriller with top notch narration. The Crestmont brothers have been shrouded in mystery since the death of two of their girlfriends. Lauren is the new girl at school and starts up a fling with Robbie Crestmont before finding out about the accusations. With a dark past of her own, she is willing to give Robbie the benefit of the doubt. That is until she stumbles across incriminating evidence…
This was so much fun. It had me hooked from the beginning. I have become a huge fan of Helen Laser as a narrator and need her to read everything. Perfect for fans of Holly Jackson!
ALC was provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you Edelweiss, NetGalley and the author for ARC & ALC’s of this book.
“The One That Got Away With Murder” by Trish Lundy is a gripping DEBUT thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. The story is cleverly crafted, with twists and turns that will leave you guessing until the very end. Lundy's writing is sharp and engaging, drawing you into the world of the characters and making you feel like you're right there with them. The characters are well-developed and relatable, and the plot is full of suspense and intrigue. Overall, “The One That Got Away With Murder” is a must-read for fans of thrillers and suspense novels. Highly recommended!
I’m an immersive reader and I highly recommend the audiobook as well!!
This book was fast paced and kept me interested the entire time! I listened to the audiobook and the narrator was excellent. I finished this book in a day, I just had to know what happened! I loved the characters and seeing their development throughout!
The story grabbed my attention right away. The story was full of lots of twists and turns. It did feel a bit repetitive in the middle third though. There are a lot of characters to keep straight in this book and because of that there isn’t a lot of character development. I also felt like as the story went on, there were more and more pieces that never got fully flushed out. I thought the author did a good job with who the killer was, but I wish more had been shared about their motivations. The ending all came together very nicely too, which didn’t feel completely realistic.
Overall, it’s an engaging YA thriller with lots of twists and turns. I just feel like it needed less characters and a bit more back story development. If you do decide to read this book, I’d recommend the audiobook. I thought the narration was great.
Thank you NetGalley and Trish Lundy for the opportunity to listen to this ARC!
Lauren's Junior year of high school ended in a tramatic event. To help her daughter get a fresh start her Senior year, her mom moves them across the country. Lauren isn't sure who or what she can believe and on top of that her mom has a new boyfriend with a daughter she has to try and navigate too! For her own sanity and curiosity can Lauren help solve the murders in her new town?
The One That Got Away With Murder definitely gave off A Good Girls Guide to Murder vibes! So if you enjoyed that, this one is definitely worth the read too! 3.5 stars for The One That Got Away With Murder! I really enjoyed it!
LOVE LOVE LOVED ITTTTT!!!! Very good book.
Much deserved 4.5 stars for me. I didn’t give it a 5 just because the killer was predictable very early on!!!! Can’t wait to see what other book this new author will come up with after this one.
Thanks for this ARC was so good and I am glad I got to discover this new author.
