I loved the story, the world building and meeting the different characters. I felt completely immersed in the story and couldn't stop reading it. Loved jumping back into the Crave universe and meeting new people
Rated 4.5 Stars
Sweet Nightmare was amazing. It was not at all what I expected but in the best of ways. It's fast paced - hold on to your seat fast paced.
It's a wild ride too so buckle up. Don't say I didn't warn you. When I tell you wild I mean wild. I was in no way shape or form ready for this book but man did I love it. It was action packed with lots of twists and turns. There was never a dull moment. There was angst galore. I loved the magic system and world. I loved the way the author wove all the elements in this book together. You all are in for a treat with this one.
There were so many aspects of this book to love like the chapter headings. They were highly amusing. They were cute in some instances, witty in others and also funny among other things.
I loved the characters both main and secondary. I love me a tortured hero and Jude was that in spades. I love me a feisty heroine too and Clementine embodied it to a T. I loved them together. However, I wasn't all the way sold on the romance but I was all the way sold on this journey and how enjoyable it was.
The way my eyes were glued to the pages was no joke. I devoured it in three days. It kept my attention from start to finish and I so can't wait to get my hands on the next book. I absolutely adored it and very highly recommend it.
Dark and delightful! I absolutely loved it! This book was packed with so much I don’t even know where to start. It was full of mystery, suspense, action, fun bits, drama, romance and so much more!
Let’s start with the world; it was intriguing. I enjoyed the idea with paranormal and the last chance school idea. I liked the various creatures both animal and human that were found throughout. I especially enjoyed the characters.
Clementine was the main character. I loved her! She was a joy to read and her journey so far has been a rollercoaster of so many ups and downs. She’s compassionate, determined, and down to earth.
Jude, now he was a sexy mystery man. It was easy to swoon over him especially with all those tattoos ;) I loved him especially when I discovered more about him and why he did the things he did.
Their relationship was a rocky second chance not to miss read for sure! And the side characters were a delight to read as well. I can’t wait to read not only more of them but of course the main characters as well.
And yes, before anyone asks nightmares play a huge part in the story! Lots of twists and surprises throughout as well!
There’s so much going on in this story and yet so many questions were left in the end. This was an exciting starter to this new series that promises to be dark and mysterious!

Whoa. YA, can you keep up? I'll be thinking about nightmares for a while. Sweet Nightmare is fast-paced and full of action, all YA appropriate. I'll be adding book 2 to my tbr. Also, ordered the gorgeous hardcover!
The Calder Academy is a great spinoff to the Crave series! I really enjoyed the crave series so I was excited to read this book! And Tracy Wolf did not disappoint! I really like Clementine and Judes interactions! The back and forth banter between them was fantastic! The characters are complex and ones that will stay with you long after the last page! There's suspense, twists and turns, adventure, humor and so much more! It's a fantastic start to a new series! Thank you Tbr and Beyond Tours, Tracy Wolf and Entangled for sharing this fantastic story with me!
While I wanted to love this book, I couldn’t look past the writing style. It’s not bad per se, but a little too juvenile for my liking. The story line is fine. It keeps you interested enough to finish the story. Not bad, just not for me.
As a lover of the Crave series and everything Katmere had to offer, Calder Academy brought me right in and kept me on my toes! The dark academia vibes, paired with the fantasy aspect, made for an absolutely amazing book. I am so ready to hear more about the adventures of this crew and see Clementine and Jude develop more throughout the remaining books!
I will post a more in depth review of this, along with the pinterest moodboard that I created for this book, on the release day to help celebrate and promote this awesome book! Current review posted to goodreads
The Calder Academy series is the spinoff of Tracy Wolff’s highly successful Crave series, featuring Katmere Academy. Two fan favorites from the Crave series, Remy and Izzy link the series. I have yet to finish the Crave series. Luckily, The Calder Academy series stands on its own.
Sweet Nightmare is the first book in The Calder Academy series. From start to finish, I was glued to the pages. This resulted in sleep loss, but I don’t regret it. I mean really, has anyone ever said, “Just one more chapter” and actually stuck to it?
Told primarily from the point of view of seventeen-year-old Clementine Calder, yes, you read that correctly. Clementine’s family owns and runs Calder Academy which is in essence a juvenile detention boarding school for paranormal teens who have done something bad in the real world and can't go to a regular paranormal school. The school is located on a secluded island in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Galveston, Texas. Unlike a lot of the kids at the school, Clementine who is a manticore was born on the island and has never left. Meaning she has never shifted or used her magic because a spell blocks students from doing so.
Jude Abernathy-Lee, also seventeen, is a oneiroi. He has been at the academy for ten years which is unheard of as usually students come in their early teens. Until three years ago, he and Clementine were the best of friends when he suddenly stopped talking to her with no explanation given. This changes when the two are forced to partner together for a Brit Lit assignment.
For Clementine, this is a nightmare. But things can and do get worse. It's summertime in Texas and that means tropical storms and hurricanes. What starts as a seemingly inconsequential tropical storm turns into a massive category five hurricane in a matter of hours and it has the island and school in its sites. Unexplainable things start to occur and Clementine's mother Camilla, the headmistress, decides that the school will evacuate to higher ground. With a school full of paranormals who hate each other, things go from bad to worse really quickly. Luckily for Clementine and Jude, they have friends who have their backs through it all. But Jude is hiding a huge secret that could be everyone's undoing.
I have nothing but praise for Sweet Nightmare. I loved the characters of Clementine and Jude. Clementine is a really strong character, though she thinks she's weak at times. She has a heart the size of Texas. Jude is a brooding hero who is a tortured soul but is probably the best out of everyone on the island. They have great chemistry. And despite not talking to each other for three years, they never stopped truly caring for each other. They are braver than they think they are. The secondary characters of their friends were great as well and often added humor to tense moments. And there are a lot of tense and shocking moments. Tracy put in all of these surprise twists.
At its core, Sweet Nightmare is about friendship, found family, and believing in yourself. I wouldn't say Sweet Nightmare ends with a cliffhanger, but you definitely know there is some unfinished business. I would love to say this upsets me, but I can't. It leaves me wondering what's going to happen next and just what this mix of characters will do with everything they've learned about themselves and each other. I can not wait for Sweet Chaos, the next book in the series.
Sweet Nightmare contains what some would call horror elements. I am by no means a person who reads horror books or watches horror movies. Yet, I had no problem with anything in this story. If you have concerns, please check the publisher’s website for content warnings.

“I am stronger than all of the problems and challenges I encounter. I just have to believe in myself.”
“The past is set, but the future can change.”
I love Tracy Wolff’s world building. I felt like the introduction to Calder Academy and its paranormal student body was executed in a way that was both engaging and informational.
Clementine is such a strong character. She’s tough and has the biggest heart. No matter how she feels about a situation or person, she strives to do the right thing and stands up for others. She’s been through so much and experienced hard losses, but she still cares with everything she’s got.
The relationship between Jude and Clementine is complicated and bumpy, but I really enjoyed learning their history and seeing them work together while also working through their past. I’d definitely be interested in Jude getting his own book too.
The storm was the perfect backdrop for the story to unfold, and there were a lot of twists I didn’t see coming. The story was captivating and suspenseful, and I definitely stayed up past my bedtime one too many times to see what would happen next.
I feel like I was left with a lot of questions, as were our main characters, in the end. I hope to get those answers in the next book and to see how Calder Academy is changed after the storm.
I want to say thank you to Tracy Wolff, NetGalley and entangled publishing, for this amazing opportunity to get this arc.
First of all. This book is AMAZING! I literally could not put it down. I was reading it so fast, that I had to hit the breaks to slow down.
Nightmare it is. From beginning to the end, it’s one big nightmare.
I felt like everyone died! So don’t get too attached like I did.
Friendnemies to lovers? Is that what you call it? Friends, but no longer friend and they became lovers. Yeah.
It’s not like romanticizing on the characters. It’s more realistic. One bad thing leads to another.
But getting to know Remy and Izzy even more. My gosh loved it!!! Izzy has a sense a humor, and remy getting to know him more.
Clementine getting to know her, and for who she truly is, is like coming of age.
Jude is this emo type of guy, who keeps to himself but lets in a handful of people.
Simon, ember, Luis, Mozart different paranormals that we did not see in the crave series.
There’s sirens, phoenix, manticore, and so much more.
It’s nothing like the crave series. It’s completely different.
This is absolutely my favorite read of the year!
Tracy nailed it with this awesome new series, I'd give it a million stars if I could!
The twists and turns definitely kept me on my toes! I was captivated from beginning to end.
The story is brought to life with a beautifully depicted world that's filled with complex characters you can easily fall in love with!
It will make you laugh, gasp, swoon and so much more, I highly recommend it!
I can't wait to see where the story goes as it continues!
Thank you to Netgalley, Entangled Teen and Tracy Wolff for allowing me to read this book ahead of release in exchange for my honest opinion.
I was really excited for this book because I loved the Crave series and knew that Remy and Izzy would also appear in Sweet Nightmare. Usually it takes me awhile to get into a new book but I was hooked pretty quickly after I started to read it. Jude and Clementine are both great characters and I love the interactions between them. I this book is definitely YA but a little more grown up vs the Crave series, like it's a little darker and the characters seem more mature.
This book was phenomenal! The character development and variety was great. I loved the way I could see each character in my head as described in the book. The book timeline was not confusing, it was easy to keep up with and the ending left me 3anting so much more! I can’t wait for the next book!
Tracy Wolff’s latest masterpiece, “Sweet Nightmare,” plunges readers into a dark and twisty world unlike anything we have seen before. While still set within the same universe as her beloved “Crave” series, this chilling tale introduces a cast of new characters (with a few we already know) who captivate and intrigue us from the very first page.
With a departure from her usual style, Wolff delves deeper into slight horror elements, crafting a narrative that is both gripping and haunting. The story grips you in its tendrils of suspense, refusing to let go until the final, spine-tingling conclusion.
As a devoted fan of the “Crave” series, I was initially apprehensive about this book living up to its predecessor. However, my doubts were swiftly dispelled as I found myself utterly consumed by the sheer brilliance of “Sweet Nightmare.” Each twist and turn took me by surprise, leaving me on the edge of my seat clutching my pearls.
What truly sets this book apart is the unforgettable cast of characters. From their complex personalities to their hidden depths, each individual is expertly crafted and utterly compelling. Their struggles and triumphs resonate long after the final page is turned, leaving a lasting impression on the reader.
As the tension mounts and the stakes soar ever higher, Wolff’s masterful storytelling keeps you guessing until the very end. Just when you think you’ve seen it all, she throws another curveball that leaves you breathless with anticipation.
In short, “Sweet Nightmare” will leave you spellbound. I devoured it and am already counting down the days until the next installment. Tracy Wolff has outdone herself once again, solidifying her place as my favorite author.
Thank you to Tracy Wolff and Entangled Publishing for sending me this arc.
Wow! This book was SO good. I personally LOVE the Crave series and I was so excited when Tracy announced a spin off. I really loved the characters so much. This series already feels like home (just like the Crave series). I can’t wait to re read this again and again. (Will post another review when out).
Tracy never misses!!!!!!
Thank you to Entangled Publishing for this arc! I absolutely adored this book. Tracy Wolff is a phenomenal writer and really knows how to world build and get you to love her characters 💜
This was a perfect spinoff to the Crave Series. Crave is one of my all time favorite series and when Tracy announced she was going to write a spinoff, I was 100% all in! I was so excited to go back to this world and to learn about the new school and new characters. I love how dark and mysterious this book is!
Jude and Clementine have stolen my heart 🥹 I love their interactions with each other and their banter. I’m a sucker for good banter and these two did not disappoint! I liked how we got so much new content while also getting hints to the Crave world. Having Remy and Izzy in this story was perfection. I’m obsessed with Izzy’s sass lol.
I can’t wait to see where Tracy takes us next in Sweet Chaos!
Thank you to Tracy Wolff and Entangled Teen for this brilliant amazing book! Calder Academy is full of nightmares for sure. Tracy creates an amazing world!
If you read one book this year, this is the one!!!
I read this book faster than any book ever! I only put it down to do what I absolutely had to do during the day. I am going back now to do a slow re-read. This book is an absolute must-read!
Jude is super hot, and Clementine is amazing. Their chemistry is electric! So many mysteries uncovered. The ending was so unexpected. I did not see it coming!
Izzy is Izzy! I just love her. Where does she keep getting those knives? Remy is back, and he is loyal to a fault.
We get to meet some incredible new characters, too; Luis (a werewolf), Ember (a phoenix), Mozart (a dragon), and Simon (a siren) who all support Clementine with their paranormal gifts!
The Calder Academy gang is so amazing. You are going to love them all, except for the Jean-Jerks who you're going to hate!
Highly recommend. Five plus stars!!!
I predict another best seller for Tracy for sure!!!
Thank you to Entangled Teen and Tracy Wolff for the ARC of this book and opportunity to read it early. All opinions in this review are my own.
The absolute chokehold this book had on me for the 4 days I was reading it was unbelievable. I do not know if there are words to adequately express how much space this book has taken up in my brain for the past week, and will continue to take up for the foreseeable future. If this book series does the same thing Crave did, where each book subsequently gets better than the last, I am going to have to come up with a new star rating system since I can't mark higher than 5 stars.
This book is book one in the spin-off series to Tracy's NYT Bestselling Crave series, and from the gate this book is absolutely phenomenal. It follows Clementine Calder and Jude Abernathy-Lee over the course of a few days when a freak storm hits the Calder Academy campus causing absolute chaos. Clementine is a traditional Tracy heroine - she is feisty, she stands up for what she wants, she makes sure that people aren't getting hurt to the best of her ability, and sometimes to her detriment. Jude is dark and broody, handsome and aloof, and all Clementine wants is to regain the friendship (and maybe more...) she had with him before her world got turned upside-down three years before. There is a ragtag group of friends that all very clearly have their own personalities and are super fun characters in their own right - I would gladly read a book about any of the side characters in Tracy's books because they are so dynamic. This book will keep you on your toes as you try to figure out what the "big bad" is of this book - is it the storm? is it the adults? is it the other students? Who's to say.. - and the nods to the Crave series is a wonderful connection for those of us who are trying to stay connected to that world.
Is this book the same as the Crave series/is it book 7 in the Crave series? Absolutely not. Tracy has successfully managed to create a spinoff that can be read on its own without reading or spoiling anything from the original series. Obviously it spoils a few aspects of that series, since it takes place after book 6 ends, but nothing that would cause you to not enjoy the Crave series if you read it second. These books do a beautiful job touching on mental health concerns, and if panic/anxiety disorders & identity development are the themes of the Crave series, then this series is PTSD and learning what it means to trust after significant trauma. This book is beautiful, and it resonated so deeply with me, and I cannot wait for the world to get to read it.
If you've read Harry Potter, The Magicians, and Beautiful Creatuers you might enjoy this new series.
Young paranormals aware of their possible powers but kept in the dark
Unable to harness and control their abilities they remain clueless of their true desitny
It's time to discover a world where faith, trust, friendship, love, and the ability to covercome your worst fears will be the key to something beyond your wildest imagination
This was one of the best adventures I've read of late. Finally an ending that doesn't leave me shredded into a million pieces. I'm craving more but I can rest until the next book comes out. Absolutely satisfied and excited to see what happens next.
Thank you to Entangled Publishing and Entangled Teen for the advance reader copy for an honset and fair review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
