This story follows Bly and her mother, Gus, on a twisty adventure to find their lost loved one. I enjoyed the pacing, POV, and banter. Bly is a sweet kid that really needs more mothering than Gus can give her. Gus is definitely flawed, but I think her heart is always in the right place.
This was a three star read for me, so I did have some cons. We met A LOT of characters. It was almost hard (without a chart) to keep everyone straight. We were meeting new characters up until 80% finished. It seemed a little far fetched that in this small town setting Bly and Gus were able to go unnoticed and encounter so many people willing to help them.
I also didn’t realize this was the third book in the series. Definitely can be read as a stand alone. I might pick up the other two to see if it fills in some gaps for me.
Thank you NetGalley and HarperCollins for this ARC.
I overall loved the story line to this book, I didn't realize that it was a third book in a series until I finished. It works great as a stand alone book, I don't believe I missed any vital info reading it without the other two.
In the beginning of the book, it went back and forth with the girl being mature and using words that I don't feel like a 11 year old would use, especially being paired with her then being seemingly immature with her vocabulary.
That honestly is my only thing about this book that threw me.
Wonderful book, and definitely will be tracking down the other two.
Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for the arc of this book. This book was from the perspective of Bly the daughter of Gus whose boyfriend went missing years before. I have to mention that I had to ignore how irresponsible of a Mom Gus is throughout this book. Once I started to overlook that I really enjoyed the book. The book is fast paced and has many twists and turns. I read this book in one day as I kept wanting to know what happens next This is the first time I have read anything from this author and I really enjoyed the book. I will be looking for more from this author.
This book is the third in a series but I read it as a stand alone book and it was fine. The mom and daughter duo are quirky and leaves you wanting to follow more of their adventures. The mystery left you guessing until the end with a few twists. A good book that left me wanting to read more books by this author. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book.
REALLY didn't for this one. I thought the plot sounded intriguing, but instead it was dreadfully slow and boring and I didn't care about the characters. The writing was choppy and I ended up skimming just to get done.
This is not the typical go to genre for me. Sometimes I feel like thriller/mystery books are over done and nagging-not with this one. When they say it grips you, leaves you wanting more-theyre right! This was my favorite of Katie Tallos for sure.
:Buried Road" is a captivating and gripping novel by Katie Tallo. The story follows Gus and her now 11 year old daughter Bly as they go on a mission to locate Gus's boyfriend Harold who had been missing for 3 years. We follow along their travels and discoveries in Piketon County, much of which have a ton of action and surprising conclusions! This book gripped me almost immediately, as I love a good who-dun-nit and mystery to unravel. At times, I felt like I were there in that camper van myself, Tallo's use of imagery and imaginative writing is to thank for thank. I really loved this book, I had a hard time putting it down for any length of time to do basically anything else! It came to a satisfying conclusion and was such a wild ride!
All right let’s get one thing straight. Gus is an extremely irresponsible mother! Now that’s out of the way let’s talk about how I enjoyed this fast paced book. I liked that the protagonist skewed a little younger so a lot of stuff sailed over her head or she forgot to mention something that was really important. This was a wild ride and I enjoyed it.
Oh my goodness, what a whirlwind of a story! Gus and her daughter are on a mission to find Howard who disappeared 3 years ago. Howard was working on a story when he suddenly disappeared. After everyone else wanted to move forward, Gus and Bo decided it was time to really figure out what happened to Howard. There is such a unique bond Gus and her daughter have that a nother always hopes to have with their child one day! I was a big champion for them always trying to make it through together. There were a lot of characters involved but I do feel like they were steadily introduced and not all at once so I was able to keep up with everyone ok. A tad slow in the beginning but once you are hooked you will be down for the count!
I love, love, loved the novel ‘Buried Road’ by Katie Tallo! The story centers around a dynamic mother daughter duo, Gus and Bly Monet, who are searching for their beloved & missing Howard (esssentially Gus’ “husband” and Bly’s “dad”) who went missing 3 years ago on their annual camping trip. Howard was a journalist who was following a story and stumbled onto something more sinister lurking below the surface. After he mysteriously vanishes without a trace, headstrong and determined Gus and Bly desperately search for Howard following “breadcrumbs”. This story had so many twists and turns and I never saw the ending coming. This is by far one of my top reads this year so far! If you’re on the fence about reading this…..go read it like now! Highly recommend!

“Buried Road” by Katie Tallo is a novel that gripped me from the very first page. The story of Gus Monet and her daughter Bly, embarking on a perilous journey to uncover the truth behind a loved one’s disappearance, was both thrilling and deeply moving. Tallo’s writing is evocative and rich, painting a picture of Prince Edward County that is as haunting as it is beautiful.
What struck me most was the bond between Gus and Bly, their shared determination and courage in the face of danger. It’s a testament to the strength of family ties and the lengths we go to for those we love. The narrative, told through Bly’s eyes, added a layer of innocence and wonder to the tale, making the dark twists all the more impactful.
The final third of the book was a rollercoaster of emotions, with twists that had my heart racing. It’s rare to find a thriller that not only keeps you on the edge of your seat but also tugs at your heartstrings. “Buried Road” is one such book, and I can’t recommend it enough. It’s a story that stays with you, haunting your thoughts long after you’ve turned the last page.
Fast paced, gripping and kept me guessing the whole time!!! This is what I look for in a thriller!! The story was executed extremely well and the characters were very well written.
Good golly this was a fantastic read! Follow mom and daughter duo, Gus and Bly, as they try to solve the disappearance of Gus's long time boyfriend and unofficial Stepfather to Bly. There is so much mystery wrapped up in this story and it takes you on a wild ride. Gus is a headstrong powerful mom who will stop at nothing! This had me laughing, crying, gasping!
Gus and Bly are thrown into figuring out what happened to Gus's boyfriend 3 years ago. He was a reporter and had found evidence of a global conspiracy when he disappeared. Gus and Bly go on the hunt and track down evidence that the police, conveniently, never looked into.
If you liked AGGGTM, you nay enjoy this read. For me the overall storyline and plot were interesting. However, being from the daughter's POV made it read slightly YA, which isn't my favorite. Overall I enjoyed the story, the resolution, and the growth of the characters. This is the 3rd novel about Gus and Bly but can be read as a standalone, which is what I did.
I've come to appreciate a good mystery, and diving into this book, I didn't realize it was part of a series. However, that didn't hinder my enjoyment at all.
Narrated by 13-year-old Bly, the story effortlessly drew me in. The author skillfully captures the perspective of a young teenager, making the situations and experiences vivid and relatable. Bly and her mother, Gus, embark on a journey to find her stepfather, who's like a father to her. What unfolds is a captivating tale set in a town filled with unexpected twists and turns.
You'll find characters to love, others to despise, and the ending will keep you guessing until the very end.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Harper Perennial and Paperbacks for providing me with an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to NetGalley and HarperCollins Publisher for this ARC!
Could it be because I didn’t realize this was book 3 in a series? Or was it just lack-luster? Buried Road by Katie Tallo is the third installment in series about a mom/daughter duo. I cannot speak on the first two books, but I didn’t find myself lost or missing information by not reading them first. I loved the premise of this story- mom and daughter working together to find a lost loved one, in the woods, thriller and suspense. I found the excitement fell flat for me. While I won’t say this is a “bad book”, it flowed smoothly, it’s not a fan favorite for me. Maybe I’ll go back and read the first two books, Dark August and Poison Lillies to see if that’s the missing link for me.
Great book, really enjoyed the twists and turns that this took me on and I would definitely recommend to a friend.
Thank you to HaperCollins and NetGalley for selecting me to receive and advanced copy.
"The Buried Road" by Katie Tallo is a story that progresses gradually with well-planned pacing, keeping readers engaged and eager for more at the end of each chapter. The characters of Bly and her mother, Gus, are outsiders who return to Prince Edward County after discovering an obituary for Howard, who had disappeared three years earlier. The only father Bly has come to know. The story revolves around Gus and Bly as they follow a trail of 'breadcrumbs,' questioning their trust in people they encounter along the way.
I love the author's sprinkle of humor throughout the novel. I enjoyed Gus's take-no-shit attitude while Bly was learning to become independent. Bly is a well-behaved preteen who inherited her mother's sass and grit. Both characters are witty and charming, and Katie Tallo provides great character development. As the story unravels the dynamic duo finds themselves in a series of troubles. She keeps you guessing throughout.
While the book is well written I don’t feel like I got a good handle on the characters. I have not read the first two books so maybe that’s why. There wasn’t really any connection I felt to Gus or Bly. And it got a bit bogged down in the middle. Not sure the ending made much sense. It seemed thrown together.
It was a good concept but not my cup of tea. Didn’t favor the daughter. She thinks like a grownup but acts like a little kid despite being older. I don’t get that and this type of mystery felt over the top. It was entertaining but just okay.
