Unique stories always rate high for me, and Love Overboard has the unique setting of a cruise ship, plus it is jam-packed with humor, romance, friendship and mystery! I laughed-out-loud at the shenanigans of the four grandmotherly matchmakers and their "victims" doomed to be set up! The "Shippers" quickly realize there's a second chance at romance, and they will take you along to see Jon and Lacey's story!
I received an ebook from the author/publisher. Opinions are my own. #NetGalley
Shannon Sue Dunlap’s Love Overboard is hoot that can be described as a Christian version of The Golden Girls meets Love Boat that is pure love story with a splash of mystery in it. Hilariously, Love Overboard tells the story of year-round cruise goers, Emily and her three friends, who call themselves “The Shippers” and make it their goal to set up all the singles with their extraordinary matchmaking skills. In Love Overboard, Emily and her friends set their sights on ship hostess, Lacey, and new ship captain, Jonathan. But getting Jonathan and Lacey together is not as easy as pie, especially when Jonathan and Lacey already have relationship history and the reason as to why Jonathan is really the new captain is mysterious.
Love Overboard made me laugh out loud from the get-go and made me want to live on a ship year-round too! This is the first time I have read a book from Shannon Sue Dunlap, but it will not be my last! I love how Ms. Dunlap causes you to escape into Love Overboard, allowing you to be aboard the cruise ship with The Shippers, Lacey, and Jonathan. The Shippers were an absolute delight to know and I fell in love with them instantly, laughing at everything they said and did. I was rooting for The Shippers matchmaking escapades where Jonathan and Lacey were concerned to be successful. I love getting to know Jonathan and Lacey, both as individuals and how they are together. I love the mystery aspect of Love Overboard, because it added spice and intrigue to an already great book. I love how Christ was woven throughout Love Overboard and how Emily always tried to point her fellow Shippers as well as Jonathan and Lacey to Christ when things would start to get rocky, both relationship-wise and of the criminal variety. I love how the storyline regarding Jonathan and Lacey was paced in the book. I especially love how Emily would encourage Jonathan and Lacey in the Lord and offer Godly Wisdom as Lacey and Jonathan navigate the Sea of Life that makes them both see what is important in life, seeking God’s Will at the get-go. From the first word to the last, Love Overboard is a pure delight to read and gives you a lovely escape full of laughter, intrigue, and Godly Wisdom. If you’re looking for an escape, especially to the high seas, that will make you literally laugh out loud while giving you romance with a splash of mystery with sprinkles of Godly Wisdom in it, then I highly recommend Love Overboard by Shannon Sue Dunlap! I am looking forward to what Ms. Dunlap creates next (and I hope The Shippers are involved in the story)!
Have you read Love Overboard? What did you think of the book?
Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for the opportunity to read this book. Thank you to Karen and Shannon for letting me be a part of the Love Overboard Launch Team. I had a blast! All thoughts and opinions are my own.
My review is also on Goodreads, Amazon, and my blog, Leslie's Library Escape.
"Correct me if I'm wrong. Didn't you give me carte blanch to keep meddling in your life?"
"It's too late." Lacey gestured to the speck in the distance that was Cozumel. "He got off the ship. What can I do? Jump overboard and do the butterfly stroke to shore?"
"Have you ever heard of a phone call?"
The "Shippers" are ready to make love happen. Just because they might all be past the romance stage does not mean that they can't help others find happily ever after. If they are going to spend most of the time on cruise ships, they may as well make love happen.
Their target is hostess Lacey Anderson. They have tried matching her before, but perhaps the new director Jonathan King will be the one. And so begins the story of finding love, running from love, hiding from love and recognizing that love is a worthwhile pursuit.
This romantic comedy is full of laughs, surprises and travel adventures. A bit of mystery and suspense is thrown in for good measure. Lacey has to learn to let go of past hurts in order to trust God with her future. Watching Jonathan and Lacey interact was cute.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. My only frustration was Lacey's relationship with her father. Her approach was very passive-aggressive. He had some growing to do, and Lacey could have gently and respectfully corrected him. Her relationship with her father had a chance a becoming better if communication was involved.
I was provided with an advanced copy of this book. A friend recommended that I read it, and I wanted to review it. All opinions are my own. 4.5 stars
This was such a fun book! Four matchmaking septuagenarians known as "the shippers" set their sights on hostess Lacey and cruise director Jon. As they sail from port to port, Lacey and Jon repeatedly find themselves forced together by the shippers, whether it's in a closet in the bottom of the ship or the top of a remote lighthouse. Lacey has some insecurities about dating, though, due to her past, and Jon is trying to figure out who's been smuggling drugs onto the ship. Will they find a way to make things work between them?
I really enjoyed the humor and faith in this book. I especially liked how Emily, the matchmaking leader, encouraged both Jon and Lacey in prayer and urged Lacey to forgive those who hurt her. The setting was also enjoyable. I've never been on a cruise, but I really felt like I was there on the ship or at the different cities they visited. The plot twists caught me by surprise! I didn't catch anything that would give away what they were, and I loved that.
What a charming and hilarious read! The “Shippers” are a fantastic group of ladies and add so much to the story. They are easily my favorite thing about the story. The mystery angle was fun and I loved the addition of that thread since I love mysteries. The ending was pretty much perfect and overall this book is completely enjoyable. My only issue with the story was I struggled at times with Lacey, her attitudes were a little much for me at points in the book, but she had some nice character growth towards the end and that was good. This one is guaranteed to put a smile on your face!
I received an ARC of this book and was not required to post a positive review. All thoughts are my own.
I often see posts on FB fiction asking for books with characters that are older. Love Overboard will fill that wish for many with younger readers also enjoying it.
"The Shippers" are four older women who live on a cruise ship as their home. They have one goal-to be matchmakers no matter how hard it gets! The leader of the group is Emily and cruise employee Lacey is like a daughter to her. When Lacey's lost love Jon comes on ship to be cruise director, Emily sets her group on their goal of helping Jon and Lacey reunite. The four women will fake illness and dire circumstances to see their goal completed. Add a little mystery and this book is a great beach read.
I loved the mixture of ages in characters in Love Overboard and the humor woven into the story. Shannon Sue Dunlap also does a great job of adding just the right amount of element of faith. I will be getting this book for my aunts to enjoy!
I received a complimentary copy of Love Overboard, but all opinions are my own.
Such a wonderful story!! Loved the antics of the Shippers and was pleased with both the story line and with the amount of "spiciness." Wonderful beach read or a getaway book if you can't get away. Very highly recommended. Can't wait for Dunlap's next book!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for access to this DRC in exchange for my honest opinion.
I’m a cruising addict, so it’s no surprise that I chose this book!
I often get frustrated when reading a book set on a cruise ship because it soon becomes obvious that the author hasn’t sailed or completed research on the cruising experience. However, this author surprised me. Not only did what I read reflect my cruising experience, but it also reflected the reality for those who work on the ships….especially on turn-around day. Congratulations, Shannon Sue Dunlap!
While I didn’t get “snort-laughing” as the tagline suggested, I was amused at the antics of the Shippers. I’d heartily recommend this to rom-com readers wanting a great beach read. It’s clean, sweet and entertaining.
When 78-year-old Emily Windsor loses her husband, Bill, a navy captain with whom she sailed 51 years together, she decides that living out her days in a retirement home is not an option for her. After calculating that it’s feasibly possible to live year-round on a cruise ship, she makes the MS Buckingham her home. Before long, she’s paired herself up with Althea, Gerry and Daisy, other septuagenarians who live on cruise ships, and dubbed themselves the ‘Shippers’. Emily’s antics soon lead to her ‘notorious matchmaker’ status. On this cruise, her mission is to arrange a love match for Lacey Anderson.
The subplot involves an investigation into Dexter Newberg’s death. Newberg was a cruise director for Monarch Cruises and was mid-contract on the MS Buckingham when he mysteriously died. In addition to a new cruise director, Jonathan ‘Jon’ King, an undercover FBI agent has embarked to help investigate. When the two plots intersect, enlightenment and hilarity ensue. You’ll giggle as you read about Operation Ambush, Alpha strikes, street slang ‘Lechuga’, Ichthyotherapy, and ‘frowsy’.
In perfect balance with the comedy and romance, is the grounding question Emily ponders: Is independence too high a price to pay? So, too, was Dunlap's examination of the Shippers' backstories.
This is a wonderful, quick read that will have you agreeing that the best adventures happen off the schedule.
I was gifted this copy by Kregel Publications and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.
This was such a fun read! Of course, there's a great love story. Lacey and Jon are both a little on the stubborn side and their second chance romance was done wonderfully. I found myself rooting for them to get their happily ever after...finally! I couldn't get enough of them. There was also a little bit of mystery mixed in which made the story all that more intriguing. Throw in some beautiful faith messages and there was really a lot to love here.
Honestly though, it was the Shippers that really made this story an absolutely delightful read. I always love stories that have meddling grandparents... and with this story you get a whole group of them to keep things entertaining. (Even if they aren't the actual grandparents, but a group of older cruise goers). Their matchmaking schemes had me laughing out loud and I loved their sass. So very entertaining. I don't know if the author plans to write more books surrounding these characters, but I would 100% read them all!
**I received a complimentary copy via Netgalley. All opinions are my own.
Love Overboard is fabulous follow up from Shannon Sue Dunlap's debut. This book was hilarious. I laughed so hard that I had tears rolling at times. I warn other readers not to be reading it in public or they will embarrass themselves from reacting at some of the scenes. I adored the main characters, the fun filled plot, and the beautiful setting. I was entertained by this delightful read from start to finish. Fabulous.
I am giving Love Overboard a very well deserved five plus stars. I highly recommend it for readers who love to read clean romantic comedies. I am looking forward to more books like this from Shannon Sue Dunlap in the near future.
I received a digital copy of Shannon Sue Dunlap's Love Overboard from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion.
A beautiful blend of romcom with a splash of women's fiction, Love Overboard will keep you laughing from stem to stern and back again. Kick back, grab a bottle of sunscreen, and don't forget a fruity drink with a little umbrella in it (first dibs on the corner deck chair on the lido deck!).
Seriously, though. The Shippers are a delightful group of matchmaking something-genarians, and Jon is just a dear. I totally called whodunnit... and didn't. Can't say how without giving stuff away.
Yes, Lacey is a bit difficult at times, and yes, I wanted to smack her a time or two, but that's how it's supposed to be! And look, if she hadn't behaved in exactly the same way every time there was a hiccough, that end wouldn't have worked. Instead, it was just perfect--for this story. Hoping to get Abby's story soon!
Oh, and that "women's fiction" bit? The Shippers' relationship is a great look at older friendships bathed in the Lord's goodness. I hope I'll be half as fun and frisky at their ages.
