This book has a FANTASTIC premise that its execution didn't quite meet.
In theory I love this idea: two morally gray antiheroes on a decade-long revenge plot, with a deliciously twisted underlying theme to explore. Should certain people be able to have greater powers than others? And to what extent can an individual exert control over their beliefs on others? Unfortunately, Schwab's writing has always been more focused on vibes than substance for me. As a result, we get plodding backstory flashbacks; passages of present-day musings; lots of big action packed into a very short time at the end of the book.
Oh, wow, was this a pretty creepy book! It was twisted beauty, words that came together to form a masterpiece of a story, words that delighted, and creeped out, and just wove a world where things are possible, good and bad, and what makes an action good or bad, and what makes a person good or bad.
Told in a back and forth narrative of University students Victor and Eli, best friends, out to find if EO's exist, and if they do, become them, themselves, and a Victor 10 years later, recently escaped from prison, and wanting revenge on Eli.
I really enjoyed the 2 parts, because the first part went back and forth between just before the present for Victor and crew, and the past for Victor. While the 2nd part went back and forth in the present between Eli and Victor, the past was Eli. So we really got to see everything!
The whole idea that when you become an EO, you lose something, some part of your soul, is an interesting idea, and fuels Eli, who is convinced that he's on the side of good. So that ending was just amazing to read, he totally deserved that!
Yeah, this was a really great book, and I hope that V.E. Schwab writes more adult books!
Although I read this a few years ago, I haven't been able to access my old blog to post a review since then. I gave this five stars and Victoria Schwab is one of my all-time favourite authors.
Thank you for allowing me to preview VICIOUS. I liked the author's writing style and unique storyline.
I loved this preview so much. Even though it was just a sample of the book, it was action packed and had me hooked right away. I loved it. I immediately went to my library's website, and requested the full book because I need to know what happens next.
Nominated theis one for the ALA Reading List Award which it won. This is one of those books that has stayed with me for years. Perfect for all of the people watching Gotham and Jessica Jones. Dark, nuanced and unique superhero story.
