I had a blast reading this graphic novel. This trip started off great, but took a surprise turn when someone made a wish. This shrunk everyone on this team, and for a moment it looked like this trip was over. Over time it helped Nell understand one of her friends better, and some nice lessons were learned. As this story came to a close, life for these friends was never going to be the same.
A hopeful and sweet approach to friendships, magic and summer camp. Steinkellner's characters are always believable and charming.
This is a sequel to a book I loved. Nell Gumbling is about the small town of Gumbling and the inhabitants within. In the first book Nell and her friends were trying to save their town. In the second book they’re going away for a weeklong summer camping camp. The winners get these amazing jackets. But first Nell and her friends are going to have to handle changes in their friendship and how people can change as they grow up. I really did like this book. I do think it is less than the first book. This book is less graphic novel and more journal where the first book was more graphic novel, less journal. That makes it quite a bit longer to read than the first one. The story is cute and fans of the first book will enjoy this book. However, if someone starts with this book, the odds of them going back to book one are less than the opposite direction.
This series continues to be engaging and the artwork is very well done. I love all the world building that the author has put in. I really want more adventures from Gumbling.
This was just as cute, if not better, than the first. I loved returning to the world of Gumbling and spending time with old, and new, friends. I felt like I was on the camping trip with the crew, and lessons were learned by all. Emma’s artwork is so fun, and I still love the unique format of mixing journal entries with traditional comic style.
"My Extremely Tiny Forest Adventure" is the second book in the "Nell of Gumbling" series by Emma Steinkellner. Nell lives in a magical world, which we see in the first book, but now it's time for wilderness camp in the woods. Nell and her friends want to win champion jackets by competing in a series of wilderness tasks. Unfortunately things get thrown off when a wish from their tiny friend Gil makes them all thumbkin sized! A fun book about friendship with bright illustrations and lots of humor. Recommended for middle grade graphic novel collections.
What an adorable middle grade book! Nell and her mythical friends are off on a camping adventure. Nell is determined to have this be a fun an positive experience and is disappointed when her friend Gil seems to be in bad spirits. While Nell tries to cheer up her friend and win the camp competition an unexpected wish is made which results in big, and small, adventures. This book is wonderfully illustrated and shows the trials of friendship and growing up and the importance of listening and feeling all of your feelings.
This was a great middle grade graphic novel which is more journal and graphic novel combined. The illustrations were great and the story was super cute. This was about adapting to change within your friend group and how to support your friends without just cheerleading which doesn’t always help. Also about how to accept yourself for who you are and that your friends love you as you are as well. Super fun and fast read.
Thanks to Labyrinth Road and Netgalley for the complimentary copy of this book. All opinions in this review are my own.
Emma Steinkellner's "Nell of Gumbling: My Extremely Tiny Forest Adventure" is a hilarious, meaningful work that would serve as a fantastic introduction to fantasy and teen graphic novels. While there are few pages packed with typical graphic-novel panels, the slightly chaotic journal entry style works so well as both a companion to the plot and a visual representation of what it's like to be twelve and telling a fantastic story that you just have to get right.
As with the first in this series, this graphic novel does a great job of taking big life topics (body image, crushes, family matters, social standing, activism) and makes them easily accessible for the target audience without making them feel tired or overly simple. I also love that the story tackles failure, and how failing at something doesn't mean that you shouldn't try again.
The page structure, coloring, linework, and art style of "My Extremely Tiny Forest Adventure" all work together to tell a beautiful visual story while the narration works to tell a familiar story to those who have lived through being a teen who doesn't quite fit in. I will absolutely be recommending this to my middle grade kiddos at any given chance!
Fun lighthearted story, magical atmosphere, super eye-pleasing illustrations. I’m too old for this story but Nell and friends’ adventure is perfect for kids who’s interested to read about friendship and accepting self-inadequacy.
I enjoyed the continuation of Nell and her friends’ story. It was a delightful read with cute pictures. I’m sure this will become a series that students love to read.
Nell of Gumbling is a cute book that is a mixture of elementary/middle grade fiction & a graphic novel following Nell’s class’s adventures in the forest.
I thought the illustrations were adorable & I loved all of the fantasy elements of the book. The characters had a lot of diversity which I appreciated, and world was fun & exciting. Personally, I would have liked a little more action in the plot, but it was a delightful read! I would definitely recommend it to the Diary of a Wimpy Kid crowd.
Thanks to NetGalley, Emma Steinkellner, and Random House for the chance to read & review!
Once again my favorite graphic novelist doesn’t disappoint! This was as cute and charming as the first one. I so enjoyed the mix of graphic novel panels and journal entries. I love this series because Nell remind’s me of Junie B. Jones, which is the series that made me fall in love with reading. The series continues to discuss difficulties with growing up like having crushes, being smaller than everyone else, dealing with insecurities. It handles preteen problems well. The adults in this are portrayed very well and are supportive of the children, even if their adventures make them nervous. I loved the introduction of the Thumbkins forest village. It was adorable and the art style of it made my heart warm. I hope there is another installment in the series!
